Patrick Thorne was so mad at his spineless cousin he wanted to hit him. He raised his fist, but after a glare from Tang Xiaonan, he resentfully lowered it. He shot Gentry Chapman a harsh glare. ’So useless. He’ll never even get a wife at this rate.’

Fuming, Patrick climbed another tree and continued snapping off dead branches. Gentry felt even more embarrassed. He knew he was useless and had made his cousin angry, but he really didn’t dare to disobey his father. ’My dad’s spankings really hurt.’

Adrian Hawthorne was gathering firewood alongside him and said in a low voice, "Can you do a favor?"

"Of course."

Gentry agreed readily.

Adrian Hawthorne whispered a few words in Gentry’s ear. Gentry’s expression turned strange. "You don’t even know my classmate. Why do you want to see him?"

"I like making new friends. Can you help out?" Adrian looked at him sincerely.

Gentry nodded. "Alright, I’ll take you to find him in a little while. He should be over by the movie theater selling postcards right now."

"Thank you."

Adrian’s eyes were especially bright. He could already sll the huge business opportunity in those little postcards. They sold for thirty cents a piece—that was an outrageous profit! If he could just get control of the supply channel, he could make at least a hundred yuan a month, maybe even more.

Gentry scratched the back of his head and gave a simple, honest smile.

Many hands make light work. Soon, they had filled three large baskets with firewood. Patrick even used vines to tie up two large bundles separately. He carried a basket on one shoulder and a bundle of firewood on the other. Adrian did the sa. The dry firewood wasn’t heavy, and they carried it with ease.

"Let carry that."

Gentry, feeling even more ashad, offered to take the firewood from Adrian.

"It’s not heavy. You just lead the way."

Adrian was about half a head taller than Gentry and much stronger. Gentry was small and thin, clearly taking after his father. It seed Brian Chapman wasn’t very burly either.

Tang Xiaonan symbolically carried a few sticks of firewood. After all, she couldn’t co all this way and return empty-handed.

Phoebe Thorne was waiting at the door. Seeing them return with so much firewood, she chuckled and reached out to hug Tang Xiaonan. "Xiaonan, you’re so thoughtful! You even know to gather firewood for your aunt."

Tang Xiaonan dodged Phoebe’s embrace, glanced at the few sticks in her hands, and her face flushed a little.

"Auntie, Gentry said he’s taking to walk around town."

Tang Xiaonan put the firewood on the ground and washed her hands. It was still early, the perfect ti to go out for a stroll.

"Go on, then. The city is much livelier now."

Phoebe gently patted Tang Xiaonan on the head and pressed so pocket money into Gentry’s hand. Goldie Thorne ca out of the house. "I’m going into town to take a look, too. Sis, don’t bother making lunch. We’ll eat out."

"It’s expensive and not even that good out there! Is that money burning a hole in your pocket? All of you are coming back here to eat."

Phoebe shot him a harsh glare. Goldie shrank back. "Well, then cook a little later. I want to walk around for a while longer."

"I know."

Phoebe agreed readily. She grabbed a vegetable basket and went out to buy groceries. She needed to make a few extra dishes for lunch to properly host her side of the family.

Tang Xiaonan, Adrian, and the others went out first, with Goldie lagging behind. Phoebe grabbed him and asked in a low voice, "Why did you bring that boy?"

She recognized Adrian Hawthorne. She knew he was that illegitimate child from the village who wasn’t well-liked. Because Adrian’s father hadn’t shown his face in four years, the villagers all assud Adrian was illegitimate and said no shortage of nasty things about Rosalind Green behind her back.

Phoebe actually felt quite sorry for the Hawthorne mother and son, but as a daughter who had married out of the village, she couldn’t offer much help even if she sympathized. Still, she was surprised to see Adrian today.
