The door was pushed open, and then they saw the shield.
The shield engraved with a diamond-shaped bald eagle appeared first through the gap.
Then ca the deep green Supersuit.
And finally, that face the Queen of England had...
A-Train and Translucent froze.
The Deep stood there with his mouth hanging open.
He knocked over the cup in front of him, and water ran across the tabletop, dripping onto the carpet drop by drop.
At the sight, Holander shot The Deep a look of disgust.
Maeve moved away from the window fra and slowly straightened.
A trace of awe appeared in those usually sharp eyes of hers.
Benjamin walked into the conference room with the shield on his left arm, his combat boots stepping across the carpet without making a single unnecessary sound.
He stopped at the far end of the long table, his gaze sweeping over every face in the room as if he were inspecting a squad of new recruits.
"Soldier Boy."
Holander continued, his voice carrying an emotion even he had not fully managed to control.
"My father."
"And also my predecessor. Starting today, Soldier Boy will serve as Executive Director of the Supe Affairs Departnt at Vought International. Every mission assignnt, personnel deploynt, and operational approval for The Seven will require his signature. His authority is above mine."
No one else knew about this.
They had thought Soldier Boy was only joining The Seven. They had never expected...
Every superhero in the room processed the aning of those words at the sa ti, and varying degrees of surprise appeared on their faces.
A-Train’s expression shifted from shock to disbelief. Translucent’s face froze. The Deep finally snapped back to himself, wiped the water from the table, and once again put on that dumb, dazed look.
Maeve glanced at Holander, then at Soldier Boy.
After saying this, Holander swept his gaze across every face at the long table.
His expression control was flawless. The corners of his mouth lifted slightly, carrying both joy and pride...
But if soone looked closely enough...
Holander really was happy.
After all, the man standing at the other end of the table was real. He was his blood, his father.
But at the sa ti, when Holander said the words "his authority is above mine," he did feel a little hurt inside. Or perhaps just uncomfortable.
Soldier Boy had a higher position than him and greater power than him.
Their strength was clearly about the sa.
Yet from this day forward, Holander was no longer the unreachable peak of Vought’s Supe system.
So Holander was still frustrated.
But that man was Soldier Boy...
He was his father.
So Holander only bit his lip and did not show much dissatisfaction.
Benjamin placed the shield on the long table, the white eagle facing upward, its painted surface reflecting a quiet gleam under the conference room lights.
He braced both hands on the edge of the table, leaned forward slightly, and spoke his first words of the afternoon to the most powerful superheroes in the world.
"I’m Soldier Boy. Glad to et you all."
His tone was flat.
"But glad or not, starting today, the rules of The Seven are changing."
Benjamin’s gaze slowly moved from the left side of the long table to the right, as if he were taking stock of a batch of defective goods.
Then his eyes stopped on A-Train.
A-Train was sitting in a wheelchair.
His elbows rested on the armrests, his chin raised slightly, giving off the air of a superhero who felt wronged but still refused to back down.
But the instant Benjamin’s gaze locked onto him, his back pressed against the wheelchair on its own.
"A-Train."
Benjamin said,
"You little pussy who only knows how to run into won. Slap yourself twice. If you don’t do it, I will."
A-Train’s pupils shrank sharply.
Hadn’t he already been beaten?
And beaten half to death, no less.
His gaze instinctively drifted toward Benjamin’s side.
Holander had already moved to stand beside Benjamin, looking perfectly obedient.
His cape hung behind him, his arms folded across his chest, those blue eyes staring at A-Train without blinking.
There was no expression on his face.
But that very lack of expression was more chilling than any threat.
The aning was obvious.
My dad told you to do it. You’d better do it yourself.
A-Train’s Adam’s apple bobbed.
"Smack! Smack!"
Two crisp sounds rang out.
A-Train’s palms struck his left and right cheeks hard.
He hit himself so hard that even he froze for a mont.
Two deep red handprints quickly rose on his face, and a trace of blood even seeped from the right corner of his mouth.
Benjamin watched without the slightest change in expression and continued,
"Good. A-Train, one more thing. If I find out you’re doping yourself for future races again, you won’t be staying in The Seven."
Sothing buzzed in A-Train’s head.
Doping.
Compound V.
He had done that extrely discreetly. No one should have known. Even if Holander had ordered him to transport Compound V, Holander should not have known he was using it on himself.
No. Maybe he already knew. Otherwise, how would Soldier Boy know?
He abruptly raised his head and looked at Benjamin.
But there was not a trace of interrogation or probing in Benjamin’s expression.
The look on his face was exactly the sa as when he had ordered him to slap himself.
Calm, certain, as if he were stating a public fact.
Then A-Train’s gaze drifted involuntarily toward Holander again.
It had to be Holander. Holander must have told Soldier Boy.
And Holander was still standing beside his father, staring at him with eyes that held no warmth at all.
A-Train swallowed. A drop of blood from the corner of his mouth slid down his chin, but he did not wipe it away.
"Yes, sir."
Benjamin moved his gaze away from him and onto another figure at the long table.
"Translucent."
Translucent stiffened slightly.
To be honest, he had been secretly relieved just now.
A-Train had been singled out. The Deep probably would not get away either. As for him, aside from his fondness for won’s restrooms... there was nothing anyone could really hold over him.
He should count as one of the better Supes.
But Benjamin’s next words made his asshole clench on pure reflex.
"Translucent, if I catch your disgusting ass getting naked in a restroom to peep again, I’ll shove a bomb up your ass, blow you into the sky, and feed the pieces of you to the dogs."
Translucent froze in his chair.
The outside of his carbon-fiber skin was indestructible, but inside was still his own body, bulletproof, yes, but far from without weakness.
And he had never told anyone about that weakness.
An image surfaced in his mind on its own.
It was so specific and vivid that he had to squeeze his eyes shut.
Was this the wisdom of a first-generation superhero?
An old relic who had just crawled out of a Russian lab after being frozen for forty years.
He had only been back for a few days.
And yet he had already figured out a fatal weakness no one had discovered in all the years Translucent had spent at Vought?
Translucent opened his mouth as if to say sothing, but in the end, he only lowered himself and said, "Yes, sir. I’ll never do it again."
Standing beside Benjamin, Holander blinked.
A faint flicker moved through his blue eyes.
A-Train nearly running into soone, Translucent peeping. He knew about all of it.
There was nothing inside Vought that he did not know.
But as far as he was concerned, these were just harmless little flaws.
So what if soone got hit?
So what if soone took a peek? It was not a big deal.
Holander had thought Soldier Boy would lecture the even more useless Deep, since that waste of space could only talk to fish.
He did not really understand why his father was making examples out of such trivial things.
Was this about disciplining them? Establishing authority? Or...
Suddenly, a few images flashed through his mind.
His expression stiffened slightly.
Now that he thought about it, the bad things he had done were even...
"Maeve."
Queen Maeve stood leaning against the floor-to-ceiling window with her arms folded.
Her mask was off, revealing the sharp-featured face beneath, a face carrying a trace of exhaustion and weariness.
Even before Benjamin had walked into the conference room, she had already had complicated feelings about Soldier Boy’s return.
And as Benjamin dealt with A-Train and Translucent one by one, she could not help seeing him differently.
Though his real goal might have been to establish authority, not genuinely enforce discipline.
Now that her na had been called, her back straightened a little on its own.
"If Translucent does this again, report it to ."
"Yes, sir."
Maeve’s gaze swept toward Translucent, the contempt in her eyes completely undisguised.
She had worked with Translucent for a long ti.
Every bit of goodwill she had ever had toward this "teammate" had long since been worn away by his filthy little habits.
Now soone was finally dealing with him, and in such a direct way. She even felt a long-lost sense of satisfaction.
Caught between the two gazes, Translucent shrank his neck back and quickly said,
"Yes, sir. Yes, sir. It’ll never happen again."
"Deep."
Benjamin’s voice turned toward the next target.
The Deep’s shoulders visibly trembled.
The glass of water in front of him had already been knocked over once. After he hurriedly set it upright, it had left a wet patch on the table that still had not been wiped clean.
He raised his head to look at Benjamin, doing his best to keep his expression steady, but the panic in his eyes had already betrayed every thought in his head.
A-Train had been made to slap himself in public. Translucent had been threatened with a bomb up the ass. Now it was his turn.
He had no idea what was waiting for him.
He did not think he had done anything wrong, right?
Probably not.
Benjamin looked at him, the contempt in his eyes needing no explanation.
"A useless fish-fucking piece of trash."
The conference room was silent for a full two seconds.
Ashley did not even dare to breathe. She could not believe that the first thing Soldier Boy did after returning was to discipline, or rather, lecture the entire The Seven...
