Standing beneath the ancient tree rooted at the edge of the spirit pool, fed endlessly by twin, murmuring waterfalls, Ningyan found himself staring into the soft, luminous glow reflecting the night sky.

He drew in a slow breath.

One by one, he undressed without hurry, folding his clothes neatly beside the pool and placing his flute atop them. Then, with careful steps, he entered the water.

Warmth enveloped him, white-gold light curling around the crimson patterns on his feet, swallowing them inch by inch until his lower body disappeared beneath the surface.

His shoulders loosened. He lifted his hands and rubbed his cheeks slowly, exhaling.

Then he froze.

A subtle shift in the air prickled along his skin. Soone was watching him.

ishan stood among the trees, half-hidden by shadow. He kept his distance, the thick trunk of the tree before the pool separating them, but his erald, serpent-like eyes were wide, fixed on the sight before him.

Scarred jade skin. Pale strands of white hair clinging damply to Ningyan’s back.

He looked as though he couldn’t quite believe what he was seeing.

After all, he had searched for Ningyan for nearly six months only to find him here, in the lower district of Water City.

ishan took a single step forward.

At once, Ningyan turned.

For a heartbeat, ti seed to still. Violet eyes widened, lips parting in surprise then delight blood across his face, soft and undeniable.

"ishan!"

The way Ningyan lit up struck ishan square in the chest. Heat crept up his neck, and he took another hesitant step closer. His voice ca out low, almost reverent, thick with longing.

"Ningyan."

Ningyan looked ready to leap from the pool then abruptly rembered himself. He stopped short, making an embarrassingly silly face.

"I—sorry. I would hug you right now, but..."

"It’s alright."

The smile that curved ishan’s lips surprised even him. He wasn’t sure he had smiled at all since Ningyan vanished. At least, not when he was truly himself.

"How did you find ?" Ningyan asked, eyes bright and fixed on him.

ishan found the courage to move closer. He crouched at the pool’s edge, and Ningyan drifted nearer, watching him intently.

Slowly, almost as if afraid the mont would shatter, ishan lifted his hand. His fingers brushed beneath Ningyan’s chin, tilting his face up.

Those glowing erald eyes searched him, needing desperately to be certain that Ningyan was real.

Ningyan felt his heart tighten at the expression on ishan’s face. He braced himself for questions. For that night, for explanations he still hadn’t fully prepared.

But instead, with ishan’s hand warm against his cheek and that vulnerable look in his eyes, what left his lips was, "I’ve missed you so much."

Ningyan’s eyes widened. Heat rushed through him all at once, his heart flipping so violently he had to take a breath just to steady himself.

"I’ve missed you too."

ishan’s thumb brushed gently over his flushed skin, his lips curving faintly.

"I’m glad," he said softly.

Ningyan slowly lifted his hand, covering ishan’s, unwilling to let it leave his cheek. "About that night... I’m sorry. I was coming to you, but then Yunyi.. she did sothing to , and I couldn’t..." His fingers tightened around ishan’s. "I swear I was on my way. My only regret is not coming to you first. I really should have—"

"I found you," ishan interrupted quietly. "That’s all that matters."

The weight that had been crushing Ningyan’s chest lifted instantly. He smiled then that smile turned mischievous.

Without warning, he grabbed ishan by the sleeve, tugged his glasses off, and dragged him straight into the water. They vanished beneath the surface, bubbles breaking around them as ishan instinctively wrapped an arm around Ningyan’s waist. They surfaced monts later, Ningyan laughing breathlessly before throwing his arms around ishan’s neck and holding him tight, eyes squeezed shut.

With a deep, steadying breath, he murmured, "I’m so glad you’re you, Lan ishan."

ishan froze. His eyes widened then slowly softened as he returned the embrace, closing his eyes. "Please don’t leave again."

The plea in his voice twisted sothing sharp and guilty in Ningyan’s chest.

"I can’t bear to live my days without you anymore," ishan continued.

Ningyan pulled back just enough to look at him properly, his smile gentle as he cupped ishan’s wet face, watching every subtle expression as he carefully placed the glasses back where they belonged.

"I don’t think I’m worthy of being the object of your affection, Lan ishan," Ningyan admitted softly, brushing damp strands of hair from his face.

ishan looked genuinely puzzled. "Why not?"

Ningyan’s smile deepened, unreadable. "Why not?"

"Is it because of Yan Wuhen?"

The jealousy in Lan ishan’s voice was raw and unmistakable. It made Ningyan smile. Being the object of such unguarded affection felt good. Too good.

"Yan Wuhen doesn’t have a claim on anymore."

Lan ishan wasn’t sure that was true. Not really. But he said nothing. He simply held Ningyan closer, savoring the warmth of his body pressed against his own, the way Ningyan’s face brightened with that beautiful, infuriating smile.

"I don’t care about Yan Wuhen," ishan said quietly. "Or anyone else. You are worthy of my affection."

Ningyan’s smile widened, softer now. "You can’t just reappear and crash into the quiet life I’ve built for months, Lan ishan."

"Oh." The shift was imdiate. ishan looked wounded, his voice dropping. "I’m so—"

Ningyan cut him off with a kiss.

It was deep, unhurried, stealing the breath from both of them. ishan sank into it instantly, responding with equal hunger. Too much hunger. His grip tightened at Ningyan’s waist, firm but careful, as Ningyan guided the kiss, their heavy breathing blending with the roar of the waterfalls.

ishan sighed into his mouth, unable to stop himself from sucking at Ningyan’s lips. He tasted sweet. Dangerously sweet. And ishan couldn’t get enough.

Ningyan’s hands slid to ishan’s shoulders before he suddenly pulled away, breathless. Desire burned openly in those violet eyes, leaving ishan dizzy, addicted, aching to claim his mouth again.

He leaned in instinctively but Ningyan stopped him.

"I want you to make love to , Lan ishan," he said, breathing hard. "Right now."
