Rong Yue blinked in surprise, his blue feline eyes widening slightly. He studied Ningyan carefully, waiting to see if he would take the question back.

He didn’t.

Ningyan simply watched him, calm and expectant, clearly waiting for an answer.

Rong Yue’s thoughts drifted, unbidden, to the night before. Even from his own chamber, the pleasure filled sounds had carried through the halls, soft and unrestrained, impossible to ignore.

"I..."

Ningyan suddenly turned his face away, leaning back against the balcony, a smile tugging at his lips.

"You were actually going to answer that," he said, amusent clear in his tone.

Rong Yue scoffed under his breath. "Well, you asked."

Ningyan shot him a sidelong glance. "So? Are you staying or leaving?"

Rong Yue exhaled softly. "I would have liked to stay, but I need to return to my clan. There are matters I can’t afford to miss."

Ningyan nodded slowly, his expression turning thoughtful. "...Rong Chao. Is he doing well?"

"In his own way," Rong Yue replied. "Though I imagine he’ll be quite devastated when he realizes that the beast he admires most is now... tied to you."

Ningyan’s grip tightened around the flute.

"Oh.. ishan..." Guilt flickered across his face as mories of Chao’s swooning surfaced, and Rong Yue let out a quiet chuckle.

"There’s nothing to feel guilty about."

Ningyan looked at him, worry slipping through his composure. "What if he never speaks to again?"

Rong Yue pushed himself away from the balcony, taking a few slow steps back. His ears twitched faintly, his tail swaying behind him as he watched Ningyan. Leaning there, relaxed against the railing, looking at him so openly.

He really did look... disarmingly soft.

Rong Yue’s lips curved slightly.

"You were thinking about that," he said, voice low with quiet amusent, "even last night, when you were... otherwise occupied? I doubt you were. Being impaled by..."

"Quiet! You’ve made your point," Ningyan snapped, his face flushing.

Rong Yue scoffed softly.

Was this the sa phoenix who had boldly asked him how he felt listening to him last night?

He had felt many things. But he simply wasn’t going to give Ningyan the satisfaction of hearing them.

"You can leave now," Ningyan said.

They fell into silence, their gazes locking in a quiet standoff that stretched longer than either of them cared to admit.

Rong Yue almost asked. About the crystal. About Jun Haoxuan. About the sudden marriage.

He knew it was connected. It had to be.

But how?

In the end, he said nothing.

He gave a small nod and turned away.

He had barely taken a few steps when the air shifted.

A sudden surge of spiritual energy rippled behind him.

Rong Yue froze.

"Ah.."NNingyan’s eyes flared with that vivid, ominous purple. Pain flashed across his face.

Then his eyes shut. His body gave out and he fell straight over the railing.

"Ningyan—!"

Rong Yue spun instantly, shock flashing across his face as he leapt after him without hesitation. His speed cut through the air as he caught Ningyan just before he could hit the ground.

He steadied them both, tightening his hold.

Ningyan lay limp in his arms. His lips had lost all color. His heartbeat.... had gone faint.

"What in the realm..." Rong Yue’s expression darkened.

With a flick of his essence, the fallen flute vanished into his spatial hold.

Then he moved fast.

He rushed back into the inn, his presence sharp enough to startle the attendants as they turned in alarm.

"Lan ishan!" His voice rang out, urgent and commanding.

An erald portal tore open before him.

Rong Yue halted.

Lan ishan stepped out, calm, composed until his gaze landed on Ningyan. Everything cracked.

"...Ningyan?"

"We were just talking," Rong Yue said quickly, stepping forward. "He collapsed. His heartbeat is slowing."

ishan didn’t hesitate. He took Ningyan imdiately, pulling him into his arms with a care that didn’t match the tension in his eyes.

A portal opened again. They stepped through and reappeared inside the chamber.

ishan moved quickly, laying Ningyan onto the bed, his composure gone.

Rong Yue, left behind, cursed under his breath and hurried after them.

He barely made it down the corridor before Yan Wuhen stepped out, blocking his path.

His crimson hair was loose, robes hanging open just enough to reveal the hard lines of his chest and abdon, his trousers sitting low on his hips. His fox eyes narrowed sharply.

"What is going on, Yue’er? Are you hurt?"

"No," Rong Yue said quickly, breathing unevenly. "It’s Ningyan."

That was enough.

Wuhen’s entire expression changed. He didn’t ask another question. He moved, his nine tails flaring behind him, restless and tense as he strode down the corridor, Rong Yue following close behind.

They pushed into the chamber and found Lan ishan already at the bedside.

His hand was pressed against Ningyan’s chest, erald spiritual energy flowing steadily into him. His expression was tight, all composure stripped away.

Ningyan lay still. Too still and pale.

Wuhen stepped forward imdiately. "What is going on?" His voice dropped, sharp and dangerous. "Why does he look like that?"

No one answered.

Wuhen’s gaze locked onto Ningyan, as if sheer will alone could force him to wake.

He didn’t move. He didn’t even seem like he was breathing.

Sothing in Wuhen snapped.

He rushed forward, grabbing ishan by the collar and yanking him back, shoving him away from the bed.

"Answer !" His voice rose, fury bleeding through. "Why isn’t he waking up?!"

ishan staggered a step, his chest rising sharply but he didn’t retaliate. He didn’t even look at Wuhen.

His gaze remained fixed on Ningyan.

That more than anything made Wuhen angrier.

He followed that gaze, saw Ningyan’s unmoving form, and his jaw clenched hard before he turned back and slamd a fist against ishan’s chest, forcing him back another step.

"Answer !"

"Wuhen." Rong Yue caught his arm, pulling him back before things escalated further.

At that exact mont, the door opened again. Jun Haoxuan stepped in, his expression lost and curious until his eyes landed on the bed.

He froze. "...What is happening here?"

Heavy and tense silence stretched.

"Poison." Lan ishan’s deep whispered voice cut through the room. Shaking just enough to betray him. "He’s been poisoned."
