Ningyan’s eyes widened. "...I was... actually going to die?"

He had assud ishan would fix it. That there would be an instant solution. There was always a solution.

Rong Yue nodded once. "Yes."

Ningyan sat back down on the bed slowly this ti. "...oh."

There were no dramatics anymore. No jokes. Just... that.

A faint violet glow stirred around him, soft and instinctive, reacting to the shift in his emotions.

Rong Yue had said we.

That ant... they had all been there waiting for him to either live or die.

Ningyan looked up again.

This ti, his eyes were softer. Brighter. Almost like starlight flickering beneath the surface.

"...I’m sorry," he said quietly. "For scaring you all."

Rong Yue hadn’t expected an apology from Ningyan. He stood there for a mont, simply watching.

Ningyan had drawn his knees up to his chest, his head lowered slightly, loose strands of hair falling across his face. That faint violet glow still lingered around him, soft, unsteady, like a fla caught in a restless wind.

"...I think I’ve been careless," Ningyan muttered quietly. More to himself than anyone else. "My flute... disappearing and then reappearing. I should have questioned it."

His fingers tightened slightly around his sleeves. "I should have noticed."

Rong Yue’s gaze softened. "You should have allowed yourself a mont to live without suspicion."

Ningyan didn’t look up.

Rong Yue continued, his voice steady, but quieter now. "It is not a fault to relax. It is a fault... to survive a war and forget how to breathe."

That made Ningyan’s fingers still.

"You were poisoned," Rong Yue added. "Not because you were weak. Not because you were careless."

His tail swayed once behind him. "But because soone chose to act against you."

Silence settled between them.

He is right...The thought ca uninvited. And irritatingly comforting.

Ningyan pressed his lips together.

Lan ishan wasn’t here.

His chest tightened.

The violet glow around him flickered sharply, like sothing unstable trying to rise again.

Before it could, Rong Yue moved. He crouched in front of him, one hand braced lightly against the bed, the other lifting and resting gently against Ningyan’s cheek warmly.

It forced Ningyan to look up and those blue feline eyes t his.

"Are you still blaming yourself, little bird?" Rong Yue asked softly.

Ningyan scoffed, though the edge of it lacked strength. "...why do you keep calling that?"

Rong Yue’s ears twitched slightly.

"You are a bird," he said simply. "A small one that refuses to fall."

Ningyan rolled his eyes. But he smiled. Just a little.

And the glow around him dimd, softening, before it slowly dissolved back into his body like mist being pulled inward.

The tightness in his chest eased.

Rong Yue noticed.

Of course he did.

He let his hand fall away without comnt to it and straightened.

"You should rest," he said. "I imagine the Azure Dragon Clan will offer you much peace."

A faint smirk tugged at his lips. "And I should prepare to leave."

Ningyan pressed his lips together as he looked at him. "...I wish you a safe journey."

Rong Yue’s eyes flickered faintly at that.

"So," he said lightly, "you forgive ?"

Ningyan didn’t answer. He simply rolled his eyes.

Rong Yue laughed. "Mm. So that is all it takes? Saving your life twice?"

He turned, his tail swaying behind him.

"Still... do try not to get poisoned again." His gaze slid back, sharp and gleaming. "Though if you do, I suppose I will co running if you call."

"No, thank you," Ningyan replied flatly. "I already have two husbands and a concubine."

Rong Yue paused and smiled. "That you do."

There was sothing unreadable in his eyes but it passed just as quickly.

He lifted a hand in a lazy wave, letting Ningyan’s flute settle onto the nearby table.

"Goodbye, little bird."

And just like that, he was gone.

The chamber fell quiet.

Ningyan exhaled deeply and let himself fall back onto the bed, one arm flung over his face.

"...he’s definitely ssing with you," he muttered to himself. "...and three is already too many."

He slapped his forehead, limbs sprawled carelessly, breath and closed his eyes.

Eventually, sleep took him.

^°^

When he woke again, it wasn’t silence that greeted him. It was.. movent. A steady, rhythmic sway beneath him.

Was he in a carriage?

There was familiar warmth around him, arms wrapped securely around his waist, holding him in place with quiet steadiness.

Lan ishan.

Ningyan didn’t open his eyes. He listened instead.

"...are you sure you won’t go after Lan Shiyu?" Jun Haoxuan’s voice.

Ningyan froze. He could feel ishan’s hand resting lightly against his abdon. His bare skin... Those cold fingers tracing slow, absent circles.

Each pass sent a faint shiver across his skin, his body reacting before his mind could catch up.

Ningyan’s breath almost hitched. He forced it steady.

"...he will co to ," ishan’s voice was low and soft. Close enough that Ningyan could feel it more than hear it. "He will realise nothing has happened. Which ans... he will act."

His fingers didn’t stop moving.

"Mm." Jun Haoxuan exhaled.

"If Lan Yunlai truly intends to bring you back, he will not act rashly." His tone turned colder, more deliberate. "Not within my territory."

He paused. "You are tied to Ningyan. That makes you... under my protection."

Lan ishan did not reply. But his silence was not empty.

Ningyan could feel it. The quiet acknowledgnt. The acceptance. It made sothing in his chest ease.

His eyes snapped open. "Han Yunyi."

Jun Haoxuan was already looking at him.

"What about her?" he asked calmly. "You seem to have developed a certain... hostility toward her."

Ningyan held his gaze. "I don’t want her near ."

Jun Haoxuan studied him.

"Very well," he said. "I will handle it."

He agreed just like that with no questions or resistance.

Ningyan’s fingers tightened slightly against ishan’s sleeve. "...thank you."

Jun Haoxuan’s expression eased, just barely.

"Are you feeling better?" he asked. "You were unconscious for twelve hours."

Ningyan blinked. Twelve hours?!

"...I’m fine," He turned his face slightly, letting it rest against ishan’s chest, eyes lowering. "...better."

"That is good," Jun Haoxuan said quietly.

Lan ishan’s hand resud its place at Ningyan’s waist. They weren’t wandering. Ningyan wanted them to wander.

He tilted his head back, looking up at him. "Are you alright, Shan’er?"

ishan nodded once. But his voice ca slower. "I should have prevented it."

Ningyan lifted a hand and covered his mouth gently. "Please don’t." He pleaded. "I’m alive... I’m here, my sweet husband."
