It was raining heavily over the Celestial Beast Academy.

Lightning split the sky again and again, thunder booming close behind, shaking the air itself.

Harsh winds tore through the grounds, whipping the barely secured flags and their sigils against the structures. Lanterns flickered violently, casting warped shadows across stone and wood.

In the main hall of the Dragon Manor, Jun Haoxuan sat upon the head throne.

Lan Yunlai occupied one of the guest seats, a jar of wine resting casually before him. Across from him sat Lan ishan, posture straight, expression impassive, his presence quiet yet undeniable.

The atmosphere was suffocating.

No one spoke until Lan Yunlai finally broke the silence.

"So," he said lightly, swirling the wine in his cup, "what do you think of my proposal, Jun Haoxuan?"

Jun Haoxuan’s brows drew together.

"How do you expect to accept a proposal from you?" he asked coldly. "The Abyss Serpent Clan is an enemy of the Azure Dragon Clan."

Lan Yunlai chuckled softly.

"Haven’t we already settled our grievances?" he asked. "You killed the healer who failed to save Jun Shengyi and we did not retaliate."

That earned him an instant glare.

"You dare speak of my sister’s life as if it were aningless?" Jun Haoxuan snapped.

Lan Yunlai did not respond imdiately.

He poured himself a glass of wine, lifted it, and examined the liquid with mild interest before taking a slow sip.

"She is already dead," he said calmly. "Isn’t she?"

His dark erald serpent eyes lifted to et Jun Haoxuan’s.

Jun Haoxuan’s teeth clenched.

Deep blue spiritual energy surged around his body, the air vibrating with suppressed fury. His fingers dug into the arms of the throne, wood creaking under the pressure. He looked as though he might erupt at any mont.

But the casual, unbothered gaze Lan Yunlai wore made it clear. That was exactly what he wanted.

Jun Haoxuan forced the energy back, reining himself in.

"I do not understand," he said tightly, "why you are not presenting this proposal to my father."

Lan Yunlai smiled faintly.

"Jun Yongrui does not see the picture as you do," he replied smoothly. "You are only twenty-three years old, yet already nearly as strong as him and he has lived for over three hundred years."

He leaned back slightly.

"The dragons are at war with one another. Many are conspiring. They want Jun Yongrui dead so they can easily erase the Jun family from the rule of the Great Divine Beasts."

His gaze sharpened. "I am here to help."

"By making act behind my father’s back?" A slow, patronising smile curved Jun Haoxuan’s lips.

"I may despise my father," he continued coolly, "but I am not an idiot, Lan Yunlai. I apologise for making you travel all this way for nothing."

He rose from the throne, clasped his hands together, and bowed in a formal, flawless, distant way.

"Have a safe journey back to the Abyss Serpent Clan."

With that, he descended the few steps of the dais, his gaze shifting briefly to Lan ishan, who had remained silent since entering the hall.

Just as Jun Haoxuan turned to leave...

"Do you truly think I would let you walk away so easily?" Lan Yunlai spoke.

Jun Haoxuan halted. "The Dragon Crystal does not belong to you, Lan Yunlai."

This ti, there was no restraint. His golden reptilian eyes flashed sharply as he turned. "Nor will it ever."

Lan ishan closed his eyes.

The subtle crease in his expression made it clear. Jun Haoxuan had crossed a line.

Lan Yunlai rose slowly to his feet. All traces of amusent vanished.

"Then would you prefer," he asked calmly, "that I take it by force?"

Jun Haoxuan scoffed. "I dare you."

Lan Yunlai studied him with renewed interest.

"So this is the path you choose? War? Force?" He sighed lightly. "All the things I sought to avoid. Which is precisely why I ca to you instead of Jun Yongrui."

Jun Haoxuan laughed.

He lifted one hand. Deep blue spiritual energy surged, condensing above his palm like a roaring tide.

"What can I say?" Jun Haoxuan said softly. "I truly am my father’s son."

The blast shot forward.

Lan Yunlai did not move.

A pitch-black barrier ford before him, swallowing the attack whole without even a ripple.

Jun Haoxuan lowered his hand, golden light blazing fiercely in his eyes.

Lan Yunlai chuckled as the barrier faded.

Lan ishan finally stood. "Father," he called quietly.

Both beasts turned toward him.

Lan Yunlai regarded his son with a condescending glance, then placed one hand behind his back and exited the main hall without another word.

Lan ishan exhaled slowly and approached Jun Haoxuan.

"You would rather choose this path," he asked, "than hand him the crystal?"

Jun Haoxuan narrowed his eyes.

"And you," he replied coldly, "would rather fear him your entire life than prove you are just as powerful as he is?"

Lan ishan pressed his lips together, his expression carefully neutral.

"Do not speak as though you know anything about , Jun Haoxuan."

With that, he turned and walked out of the main hall.

Jun Haoxuan scoffed under his breath. "Damned snakes."

◇◇◇

Lan ishan did not follow his father back to the chambers.

Instead, he stepped onto a balcony and leaned against the railing, lifting his gaze to the lightning-streaked sky.

Rain poured relentlessly, heavy drops crashing against stone and marble alike.

Then, a movent below caught his attention.

A familiar figure walked alone through the rain.

"Su Ningyan?"

Ningyan held a red flute loosely in one hand, pacing through the courtyard, his barefoot splashing through puddles.

He walked back and forth for several monts, restless, agitated until he suddenly stopped, as though sothing had finally clicked into place.

He raised the flute to his lips.

A soft, pleasant lody flowed out, nearly swallowed by the storm, yet sohow distinct.

At that mont, Ningyan’s eyes ignited with a white-gold glow, and a powerful surge of spiritual energy erupted from his body.

Lan ishan’s heart skipped.

He leaned forward, gripping the balcony rail as the wave of energy spread across the manor grounds. So strong it forced the wind itself to shift, if only for a single breath.

White-gold light engulfed Ningyan completely.

Then, massive translucent phoenix wings burst from his back, radiant and divine, unfurling into the storm as rain evaporated against their glow.

Lan ishan found himself smiling with pride. "He finally did it."
