Standing between Yan Wuhen and Lan ishan as they walked through the fox manor grounds was not how Ningyan had planned to end the night.

Thick, uncomfortable silence stretched between them until Wuhen broke it.

"Were you the one who hurt my sister?"

The seriousness in his tone sent a cold shiver down Ningyan’s spine, even though the question wasn’t directed at him.

Lan ishan stopped walking.

So did Ningyan.

Wuhen stepped forward, moving to stand directly in front of ishan and Ningyan instinctively shifted, placing himself between them.

Could he stop them if it turned into a fight?

No.

But they both liked him.

...Was that enough?

For a brief, absurd mont, Ningyan felt like a teenager trapped in a ridiculous love-triangle trope.

"I have healed Qinghe," ishan said quietly, his voice calm and asured. "I’d rather not answer any questions."

Wuhen scoffed.

"I fought a creature over a hundred feet tall," he said coldly. "It destroyed half of Sunland City. Twenty of my kind are dead. And you think I’m going to let you walk away freely?"

Lan ishan visibly stiffened. Almost imdiately, he adjusted his glasses even though they weren’t crooked.

Wuhen’s gaze was devastatingly serious.

Ningyan wanted to stop him. Whatever this was, it clearly wasn’t trivial. But... he wanted to know too.

He tugged on Wuhen’s sleeve.

Wuhen looked down at him and his expression softened instantly.

Ningyan gave him a look. Be gentle.

Wuhen frowned, then let out a frustrated, defeated sigh before turning back to ishan. "I—"

"War is coming." Lan ishan’s voice cut through the night.

Both Ningyan and Wuhen froze.

"What happened in Sunland was a test," ishan continued. "To see if demonic corruption can infect a beast core. Yu Feixue wasn’t the first. Other clans... soone has already been taken. They just don’t know what’s happening."

Ningyan swallowed. "Has there been any success?"

"Yu Feixue was close," ishan said. His face tightened slightly. "But the corruption was consuming him. Turning him into sothing else entirely. He begged to kill him. That’s why I—"

He stopped. His face creased.

"That creature," he said quietly, "was sent to distract Wuhen... so I could take Yu Feixue’s head."

Wuhen gave Lan ishan a sharp, curious look. "What for?"

"I don’t know," Lan ishan breathed. "Qinghe wasn’t supposed to be attacked. That would have exposed everything. But Shiyu—"

"Lan Shiyu?" Wuhen interrupted, his red-gold fox eyes darkening. "He’s the one who created that repulsive creature and hurt my sister?"

Ningyan blinked. Lan Shiyu?

"I’ve already healed her," ishan said quietly. "I’ve told you enough. Another test won’t happen for a while, and I won’t know anything more until—"

"You are nothing but a dog to your family."

The words were sharp and sudden.

Wuhen stepped forward, shoving ishan back by the chest once. Then again.

"You’re a Great Divine Beast Prince. An heir. Yet you keep whimpering at Lan Yunlai’s feet," he snarled. "Your tyrant father isn’t satisfied with ruling his own kind anymore. Oh, he wants the realms. Demon qi? Corruption? And you think that just because you healed Qinghe after harming her in the first place, I’ll stand here and listen while you beg for pity with half-truths?!"

"Stop it!" Ningyan shoved himself between them, hands braced against Wuhen’s chest.

Wuhen froze instantly though his glare never left ishan.

ishan rubbed his chest where he’d been pushed. The erald light in his eyes flickered darkly before fading as he steadied his breathing.

Ningyan was breathing hard now, eyes darting between them. "This isn’t ishan’s fault," he snapped. "He was obeying his father."

Wuhen’s jaw clenched. "Tell this, Lan ishan, how does a whimpering coward behead soone?" he demanded. "I’ve heard the stories about you. Half the Black Tortoise Clan wiped out. The Eastern Mountains shattered. Everyone knows them." His voice dropped, sharp with contempt. "But all I see is a book-married fool who bows his head and—"

"Wuhen!" Ningyan shoved him back again, harder this ti.

Lan ishan stood unmoving behind Ningyan. For the briefest mont, pain slipped through the calm mask he always wore. He adjusted his glasses as the wind stirred his hair.

Wuhen didn’t look guilty. If anything, he looked angrier.

"What is wrong with you?!" Ningyan demanded.

"I will take my leave now."

Lan ishan clasped his hands together and bowed slowly. He didn’t argue. He didn’t defend himself. He simply walked past them and disappeared into the night.

The mont he was gone, Ningyan turned on Wuhen, his eyes blazing white gold.

"You are an ungrateful beast!" he snapped.

"I told him the truth," Wuhen said, a small frown creasing his face. "To avoid panic, I chose to withhold his presence in Sunland from Father. But Qinghe... won’t do that if she wakes."

Ningyan scoffed and stepped back, as if he needed distance just to look at Wuhen properly. "I understand that. I really do. But you went too far."

"I told him the truth."

"Eat your fucking truth!" Ningyan snapped. "You were trying to hurt him on purpose. Trying to make him explode." He narrowed his eyes. "Why?"

Wuhen’s eyes widened slightly. Then he sighed.

"You caught ."

Ningyan stepped toward him. "Why?"

"Because one of the stories about Lan ishan," Wuhen said lightly, "is that if you cause him pain, just enough pain, the other side cos out."

A wild smile curved his lips. "The fun side. And I think it was the fun side that took the head."

Ningyan stared at him. "You know about his split personality."

Wuhen tilted his head, intrigued. "You do too?"

Ningyan’s teeth clenched. "You said all of that just to hurt him," he said sharply. "Are you serious right now?"

Wuhen’s smile vanished the mont he realized Ningyan wasn’t amused, not even a little.

"Beloved." He reached out, fingers brushing toward Ningyan’s sleeve.

Ningyan slapped his hand away and stord back toward the manor without looking back.

Wuhen remained where he was, his hand slowly lowering. He exhaled deeply, gaze lingering on the path Ningyan had taken.

"It seems the snake has my beloved’s affection," he murmured to the empty grounds. "What shall I do with that?"
