It was done on the third day just like she promised.

I arrived around mid-morning by default since this seed to be the ti when there wasn’t too much hustle at the stalls but she was already working well enough to have a steady hand.

It didn’t take long to find out that Sable was different in the first morning hours and that by mid-morning she would start to engage differently.

Observation — that’s all it was.

I was fully aware that I used the sa sentence twice in four days.

She placed it next to her things and covered it with a flat cloth in order to protect the surface. When I ca to the stand, she took it out of its wrapping and put it down without much fuss.

I examined it. It was spotless — just my na written in a professional font, my B-rank classification below it, the border she’d created with that pattern repeating itself eight tis without variation. The penmanship up close was as impressive as it had been from a distance. There wasn’t any variance of pressure in each line; therefore, she wasn’t altering anything mid-stroke. She did it all in one try.

"You’ve done great work," I told her.

"I know," she replied without any hint of self-deception. It was as if she were affirming a known truth. "It takes more ti to get the repeat correct."

"I can tell."

Nine. Day one had seen seven. Two connections in four days of real market interactions, none of which were anything to do with technique or pressure or what Vorn might have seen as structure. Soone appearing and genuinely being interested in the art.

Corruption didn’t care about intentionality. That had been the problem I kept bumping into with the ter. All it did was track exposure and connection and the ga’s valuation of relation. Mira had highlighted the sustainability issue, and back then, like now, I couldn’t answer her question.

I paid for the art. She gave change as efficiently as she did everything else, tucking it away without checking the amount, which could only an that she knew the amount the first ti.

"You’ve co by four tis." Not an accusation. Observation, just as neutral as everything else she ever said.

"The work deserves a look."

"Few runners worry about linework."

"See, pattern recognition."

She paused and gave another of her recalibration looks, this one tweaked slightly from the first. Like she was making a new estimate based on sothing else I’d said or done. "You observe things. Beyond just the work itself."

"Habit of profession."

"What do you observe."

It was a straightforward question and she asked it the way she tended to ask anything, no prefacing, no social niceties to ease the burden, just the question there awaiting an answer.

"Patterns," I replied. "Formation. Behavior. Movent. Tactics in the dungeon, but simply processing information above ground."

"And what do you observe."

"Right now."

She was patient as she waited for my answer.

"Soone who has been working precisely enough for so long that it no longer requires their conscious participation," I replied. "They don’t think about the work because it already does. It no longer needs them, so they exist elsewhere within it."

There was a pause in which the marketplace swirled around us.

"This is true," she said.

"Where do you go."

One side of her lips twisted upwards in a movent not quite a smile.

"Depends on the day."

When I returned later that afternoon, I had a second commission for her.

It really was unnecessary. I already had the header. There wasn’t any need for to request anything else. But sohow the earlier discussion at midday and the thought of it all the way back from the Broken Crown and all the way through my lunch until I started studying my Floor 7 records and sothing in all of this told I would return.

I understood this. And yet, still, I was going.

She was working on a commissioned piece for soone else when I arrived — a rchant from two booths away who wanted her to rework his price board. She held up a single finger without looking at , indicating she had noticed in her peripheral vision and was finishing the stroke before greeting . I waited. She finished the line and checked it, putting the brush aside.

"Another commission," she said.

"If you have room in your queue."

"What do you want," she asked.

"I don’t know yet. I just wanted to review the samples once more."

Sohow it went through. She understood it correctly, aning that she was paying more attention than she let on. "You know exactly what you want."

"Yeah."

A second’s silence. The shopkeeper two stands away put down his price board and left, turning around neither once nor twice.

"Queue is open," she inford .

We chatted for an hour.

Not regarding commissions, mind you. But regarding the dungeon — not the way civilians do it, full of their fear and interest, but the sa practical interest with which she approached her job. How do you know how to position yourself? When do you decide to start moving? How does your brain analyze the pattern when there is sothing already headed for you?

I explained all of this to her. Truly, in the sa matter-of-fact tone of voice she employed. She listened the way she worked — with complete concentration and zero theatricality.

Thirty-one over four days. No installation. No redirection. Just two people chatting about work in a market stall until the afternoon light shifted its hue and she had to put away the display pieces before evening rolled in from the street.

She asked to pass the pieces from the lower rack. I did. Our hands brushed while exchanging the third piece, and neither of us pulled back imdiately.

"Tomorrow," she said.

"Mid-morning."

"Bring sothing specific this ti."

"I will."

Six days passed before there was any kind of movent.

Six days of mid-morning visits, one afternoon stretching on too long, two discussions veering into territory that none of us anticipated in advance. She told all about the work, about where she learned the trade, about the developnt of her precise technique, and how it felt to get a piece just right. I shared my experience with Floor 6 with her. The Shades, zero EXP, and the guardian of the floor. She listened to with the sa level of attentiveness that she gives to everything else.

By the sixth day, she shut down her stall one hour early.

She didn’t give any explanations. She packed up all her rchandise into the containers, folded the cloth covering the display and then looked at .

"Let’s go for a walk," she said.

We walked east into the market and then into the residential area, which is quieter and contains less noise, with stone-built houses and a parallel canal two blocks away from us. We both stayed quiet, and she had the sa grace as Mira. There were no movents or gestures for the sake of making them.

She lived in an upstairs space above the cartographer’s office. Narrow staircase, low ceiling, a single window opening to the building opposite her own, the late-afternoon sun shining through at just the right angle to make her space feel warm even if the reality was otherwise. Her work surrounded her — reference sheets tacked to the walls, samples organized in boxes along one wall, three brushes soaking in water in a jar on her desk.

She turned and studied once we got inside, with the sa recalibrated look on her face, now completely current with no room for estimation left in it.

"I’ve been watching you watching for six days," she said.

"I know."

"You’re different from all the other runners who pass through the marketplace."

"Yes."

"Why?"

"Because I’m paying attention," I said. "To the job. To you. Both."

She studied for a long while after that. Then she walked over and kissed with that sa directness, no hesitation on her part. Knowing exactly what she wanted and getting it.

I placed the commission piece on the desk and kissed her back.

There was nothing rushed about her. That was the first impression I had — no haste, no act, just doing it with the sa level of focus that she showed when working. Her hands were inked all the way up past her fingers, more so on her left hand, and she moved them in ways that showed that she knew precisely what she was doing, because she did.

She stopped for a mont and glanced at — that recalibrated look once again, but this ti completely set — and then pulled her shirt over her head and dropped it.

Her body was solid and smooth, with a little ink dot near her collarbone where she had apparently given up trying to get rid of it. A body that ca from years of being sedentary and precise with your actions with an occasional physical activity thrown into the mix.

"Still watching?"

"Still observing," I replied.

She smiled and laughed, that short but sincere laugh, and pulled towards her.

It was all taken slowly in the sa key. She was quiet, not because she wasn’t there but because she was there, engaged, producing little sounds when things hit their marks correctly, not because she was performing any of them. She let out a sharp sound when I got my mouth on her tits, and her hand ca into my hair and gripped, not in order to guide, but simply because she needed sothing to hold on to.

Her tits were two good handfuls each and responded fast, her nipples going hard under my tongue. She said my na only once, flat and direct, only when my fingers pushed between her thighs and found her already slick and ready. Like she was confirming her suspicions.

"I’ve been thinking about this," she stated plainly.

"How long."

"For the third day now."

I worked her with my fingers until she was rocking into my hand and the focused quiet had broken into sothing less controlled, her breathing ragged, that little ink stain rising and falling fast. She ca without announcing it — sudden tension, held, released, gripping my wrist to keep where I was until it finished.

After that she pulled up and got my belt open as efficiently as she did everything else.

When I pushed inside her she made a low sound and went still for a mont — took stock, adjusted — then started moving. Smooth and steady, her grey eyes open and fixed on mine. Not the way Rin moved, raw and loud and unfiltered. Not the way Mira moved, asured and precise. Different — unhurried and present, like she was paying the sa quality of attention to this that she paid to everything.

"Good," she said at one point, which was the most direct feedback she had ever given in any context.

We went on for a while, and when she ca the second ti she made far more noise, her whole body tightening around . When I followed she kept hold with both ink-stained hands until it was finished.

We stayed there for so ti in the soft light coming through the opposite window.

"You would have co back anyway," she said after a while. "Second commission. You didn’t need that one."

"No."

"Yes, I know. But it’s okay."

What I did have: ink-splattered palms and a genuine laugh and soone who took equal care with every task she undertook.

The corruption ter stood at twenty-three, and my involvent in that had certainly not been manipulation.

It would be for soone else to say if the difference mattered at all.

And I would still co back either way.
