The phone in Ning Chu’s coat pocket kept vibrating. She shoved her hand into her pocket, gripping it tightly, afraid the buzzing sound would attract Zhang Shaoqing’s attention.
Luckily, she had silenced it just in ti.
Otherwise, she would have been exposed imdiately…
A few monts later, Zhang Shaoqing put down his phone and muttered, “Can’t get through… Do you think sothing happened on the way?”
“He told he’d be back at the dorm around ten. Maybe he fell asleep on the ride and didn’t notice?”
“Oh… I see.” He turned to look at Ning Chu, staring at her familiar-looking eyebrows. Scratching his head, he asked, “You guys are looking for a place to rent? How big?”
“Can you help?”
Zhang Shaoqing pounded his chest confidently. “Of course! Anything for my roommate’s happiness! Leave it to !”
“Happiness…”
Ning Chu’s mouth twitched slightly. It was obvious this guy thought Wen Yang was moving in with his girlfriend.
If they let Zhang Shaoqing handle the rental, it would increase her chances of being exposed later…
But it was still better than staying in the dorm or living in a hotel with a high turnover of guests.
“Sothing affordable… The main thing is that it’s safe,” Wen Yang quickly specified, clearly thrilled at the offer.
“Got it, I’ll make so calls.”
Zhang Shaoqing nodded, pulled out his phone, and dialed a friend. While waiting for the call to go through, he continued, “I’ll take care of the rental, so how about we grab so BBQ in the anti?”
“…”
Wen Yang hesitated, unable to co up with an excuse fast enough.
They couldn’t possibly have Ning Chu eat BBQ while wearing a mask, right? And she couldn’t take it off either—that would be a disaster.
But Ning Chu reacted quickly, using that soft, childlike voice to respond, “Brother Shaoqing, maybe next ti? I still don’t have a place to stay tonight… Next ti, it’ll be my treat.”
“Fair enough.”
Just then, Zhang Shaoqing’s call connected. He paced around while discussing rental options with his friend. After a short conversation, he hung up and grinned.
“Found one! But it’s a bit out of the way.”
“How far from our school?” Wen Yang asked.
“About a 30-minute walk. It’s a residential house, rent is 700 a month, one bedroom, one living room. Want to drive you guys over to check it out?”
It was a bit far, but the price was reasonable, and a residential house was safer than a hotel.
If they wanted a one-bedroom near the school, the rent would usually be around a thousand.
Ning Chu and Wen Yang exchanged a look and nodded in agreent to check out the place first.
“I’ll head back to the dorm. I won’t tag along,” Wang Jie said from the side.
“Alright, see you later.”
After getting into Zhang Shaoqing’s car, Ning Chu turned to look out the window. She tugged at her mask uneasily, trying to get so air.
It was autumn heading into winter, with significant temperature differences between morning and night. The flu was going around, so wearing a mask wasn’t too unusual.
“Hey, little sis!” Zhang Shaoqing called out while driving. “Why are you always wearing a mask? Take it off and let us see what you look like.”
“I have a cold…”
“She’s just a little shy.”
Ning Chu and Wen Yang answered at the sa ti.
“Ohh~” Zhang Shaoqing smirked teasingly. “Wen Yang, don’t tell you like her because she looks like Ning Chu? Just look at those eyes—they’re almost identical.”
“It’s ‘sister-in-law,’” Wen Yang corrected, barely keeping a straight face. He quickly added, “I never even noticed their eyes looked alike.”
Ning Chu opened her mouth to say sothing but then gave up, sighing silently.
She was still considering whether to pass herself off as "Ning Chu’s older cousin", but she figured Zhang Shaoqing wasn’t that dumb.
Besides, she had previously pretended not to know who Ning Chu was when asking about her.
They chatted briefly on the way, and what would have been a 30-minute walk only took about 10 minutes by car.
This place was a small village—a bit remote, but the rent was much cheaper. There was a bus stop nearby, and many students from the surrounding universities liked to rent here.
The rental was in a three-story building. The ground floor had an electronic lock, with the landlord living on the first floor. The second and third floors had been divided into one-bedroom units for rent.
Though advertised as a one-bedroom apartnt, it was essentially a large bedroom, with a sofa and TV placed by the bed, making up the living room area.
The bathroom was small but functional.
The place was fully furnished, and the renovation was decent. Each floor had only four tenants, which was far better than those small hotels packed with dozens of rooms per floor.
“What do you think? I think it’s pretty nice.”
Ning Chu tugged at Wen Yang’s sleeve and whispered, “It’s a bit far from campus, but there’s a bus. If I leave at 7:30 AM, I should make it to class on ti.”
“As long as you’re happy with it.”
“Then this is the one!”
Wen Yang and Zhang Shaoqing started haggling with the landlord, negotiating everything from rent to deposit and contract terms. One was broke, and the other was ridiculously stingy with small expenses, so they sohow bargained the rent down from 700 to 650.
“Alright, rent is 650. Internet is another 50 per month, and there’s a 50 cleaning fee when you move out. Deposit is one month’s rent.” The landlord recouped the difference elsewhere. “If the contract looks good, go ahead and sign.”
“…”
With Ning Chu’s housing settled, Wen Yang was in high spirits. Hooking an arm around Zhang Shaoqing’s shoulder, he promised, “Next ti, dinner’s on .”
“Nah, it was nothing.” Zhang Shaoqing nudged him with his elbow, his eyes drifting toward the girl tidying up the room. With a smirk, he whispered, “Make the most of tonight and seal the deal with your little wifey. Don’t waste my good intentions.”
“Uh…”
Though Wen Yang didn’t have much experience, Zhang Shaoqing had a whole arsenal of theories:
“Just tell her the buses stopped running, and I drove off. Do you think she’d let you walk 30 minutes back to campus?”
“Besides, girls always get nervous sleeping in a new place. If you refuse to leave, she’ll hesitate at first, but eventually, she’ll just go along with it~”
“That’s it! I’ve done my part!”
Zhang Shaoqing patted Wen Yang’s shoulder, then left without hesitation.
To be honest, Wen Yang was tempted.
Back when their relationship was still ambiguous, every ti he got a little handsy with Ning Chu, he’d feel guilty as hell.
But now they were officially dating.
Wasn’t it normal to take things to the next level?!
Except… Ning Chu had once ntioned that, as a succubus, she wanted to wait until marriage…
He still couldn’t understand how a succubus family could have such old-fashioned values.
