Trapped In Paradise

At noon, Ning Chu saw Wang Jie again.

Wang Jie looked listless, his eyes red-rimd and his complexion dull and gloomy. His steps were unsteady, as if he might suddenly collapse and drop dead at any mont.

On Mondays, after being “drained” by his bunny-girl girlfriend, he usually never looked too good, but today was different.

“I didn’t sleep well last night.”

Sitting in front of the computer, Wang Jie stared blankly at the ga on the screen.

“Look how worked up you are over this little thing.” Zhang Shaoqing stood behind him with his hands stuffed in his pockets, looking carefree. “Just get it done. What, you planning to keep it and raise it?”

“She won’t agree.”

“Damn it, won are such a hassle!”

Wen Yang chid in, “Try persuading her more. You haven’t even t each other’s parents, how are you going to have the baby? Even if it’s born, you can’t afford to raise it.”

Ning Chu didn’t join in. For the first ti in a while, she sat at her own desk, looking at the layer of dust that had gathered on its surface.

She pricked up her ears, listening to their discussion without saying anything, quietly wiping part of the dust away with a tissue.

“Why does your girlfriend insist on keeping it?”

Wang Jie scratched his head in frustration. “She says it’s pitiful… When I said we should abort it, she cried and made a scene. You saw it before, didn’t you?”

“I don’t get what won are thinking.” Zhang Shaoqing turned to look at Ning Chu. “Hey, put yourself in her shoes and analyze it.”

All of them turned to look at Ning Chu at once. A few question marks seed to pop up over her head as she blinked in confusion. “Huh?”

“Judging by that blank look on your face, you probably can’t analyze anything.”

She rolled her eyes and continued wiping the desk. “Maybe she’s just more emotional. And being pregnant naturally makes your emotions fluctuate more.”

Although she also thought they should abort it, she couldn’t completely fail to understand Wang Jie’s girlfriend’s thoughts.

Having been a woman for so ti now, she could clearly feel the physiological and psychological differences between won and n.

Perhaps because of estrogen, she had beco more emotional than before—more sensitive, more empathetic, and sotis subject to intense mood swings she couldn’t control.

But after more than a decade of living and being educated as a man, she couldn’t possibly beco exactly like a girl who had been one from the start.

So these changes were only mildly troubleso to her. They weren’t even as much of a headache as getting obsessed with lewd stuff.

“How do you think we should persuade her?” Wen Yang pulled over a chair and sat beside Ning Chu.

“At the very least, wait until she calms down. You definitely can’t persuade her in the next couple of days.”

After thinking for a mont, Wen Yang suggested, “How about this—Wang Jie, hurry and take a taxi back to stay with your girlfriend?”

“I still have classes.”

“At a ti like this, why are you even coming back for class? You won’t be able to focus anyway.”

Ning Chu nodded in strong agreent, echoing him. “Exactly. You didn’t even go to class this morning, you skipped two periods.”

“I think you’re just avoiding the problem.”

Her little head bobbed even faster. “Yeah, yeah! Not manly at all! Didn’t even take proper precautions, and now that sothing’s happened you’re just running away.”

Wang Jie remained silent, staring blankly at the computer screen, offering no rebuttal.

The dormitory door was knocked on roughly twice, interrupting their criticism of Wang Jie.

“Delivery!”

“Coming, coming.”

Zhang Shaoqing trotted over to grab the takeout. He glanced at the order, and his excited expression imdiately vanished. Cursing under his breath, he dropped the takeout box onto Ning Chu’s desk.

“Yours.”

“Thanks.”

“Damn it, I ordered at eleven-thirty. Why hasn’t mine arrived yet?”

Ning Chu happily opened the bag and lifted the lid. Inside was a fragrant and appetizing green pepper stir-fried pork rice bowl, steaming hot, with a golden-brown fried egg on top.

“Slls pretty good. Which place is it from?” Zhang Shaoqing leaned in. “Let have a bite?”

“Nope. If you want so, order your own.”

“So stingy!”

Ning Chu couldn’t be bothered with him. Holding up her takeout box, she stirred the steaming rice together with the green peppers and shredded pork, then stuffed a mouthful into her mouth.

Food always tasted a little better eaten in the dorm than outside.

Especially when the other roommates stared at her with hungry eyes, cursing the late delivery driver—the food in her mouth sohow tasted even more fragrant and spicy.

“Wen Yang, what did you order? Why hasn’t it arrived yet?”

“I ordered with Shaoqing, it’s pickled mustard greens rice noodles,” Wen Yang complained. “He insisted on dragging along to et the discount minimum. I couldn’t argue with him.”

“Let have a taste later.”

While eating, Ning Chu glanced over at Wang Jie.

He was still the sa as before, just staring at the ga on the screen without playing, looking dazed, no one knew what he was thinking about.

That’s how introverted shut-ins are, twisted and awkward.

Even when they know what’s right and what they should do, their personality makes them lean toward avoidance.

Ning Chu’s “understanding big sister” temperant surfaced again. Whenever her roommate—or a character she wrote—ran into trouble, she grew restless and wanted to help.

It made the rice bowl in her mouth less tasty, especially after Zhang Shaoqing’s takeout finally arrived.

The rich aroma of at kept drawing her gaze. She licked the corner of her lips, and suddenly her own food tasted dry in comparison.

“Didn’t you and Shaoqing order from the sa place? Why does he have salted beef rice while you got pickled mustard noodles?”

Wen Yang paused with his bowl. “It’s cheaper.”

“Go!”

A mischievous smile appeared in her eyes as she looked toward Zhang Shaoqing with ill intent, as if carrying out an imperial decree.

Zhang Shaoqing imdiately covered his beef. “What the hell! There are only a few pieces of beef in here! Don’t go too far! If you want so, order your own!”

“So stingy!” Ning Chu declared righteously. “I just want one piece to taste it!”

“Aren’t you the sa! Wen Yang, are you a dog or what? Why are you so obedient to Ning Chu? Don’t co over!”

While things were noisy on their side, Wang Jie let out a faint sigh and suddenly spoke up. “Shaoqing, lend so money.”

The others quickly stopped fooling around and turned serious.

“How much?”

He did so quick calculations and lowered his voice awkwardly, his face already flushed red with embarrassnt. “Maybe… two thousand?”

“Two thousand? Is an abortion that expensive?” Zhang Shaoqing muttered while checking his phone balance, then scratched his head awkwardly. “I don’t have that much cash. I just bought a pair of shoes—spent several thousand…”

Wang Jie imdiately wilted, slumping onto the desk and hugging his phone, thinking about who else he could borrow money from.

As for Ning Chu and Wen Yang—the couple lived off campus, already had high expenses, and were both broke…

But Wen Yang took the initiative and patted Wang Jie on the shoulder. “Not considering borrowing from ?”

“Keep your little bit of money for Ning Chu to eat sothing good. You just moved out from the dorm and you’ve already fed her until she’s like a ball.”

“What the hell! Wen Yang, did I really gain weight?!”

Ning Chu excitedly put down her takeout box and ran to the mirror to examine her figure. She pinched her small belly through her clothes and imdiately deflated. “No…”

That tiny bit of belly fat was like a thorn in her side!

“Wang Jie was just exaggerating. And being a little chubby looks good,” Wen Yang said to Ning Chu before turning back to Wang Jie. “I’ll transfer it to you later. Two thousand?”

“Where’d you get the money? Got yourself sponsored by so rich woman?”

“I earned it from a winter break job.”
