After Ji Rui drove the car out of the garage, he continued to drive very slowly, as if he wasn’t driving to any destination but leisurely strolling a dog along a path.
The city, usually noisy and crowded during the day, had miraculously quieted down. On the late-night streets, vehicles were scarce, leaving only the silent flashing of the colorful neon lights lining the roads, intertwining and reflecting brilliantly as they slowly passed by outside the car window.
Amidst this lively yet bleak beauty of the night scene, Ji Rui seed oblivious, as his entire attention, aside from the occasional attention to the road, was wholly captivated by Le Tong sitting in the passenger seat.
"Le Tong, keep an eye out for any roasted sweet potato stands," Ji Rui said, driving while occasionally glancing at Le Tong from the corner of his eye.
"Hmm..." As the car pulled onto the road, Le Tong rolled down the window.
The late autumn night breeze was a bit chilly, brushing against her face with a slight sting.
The night wind filled the car, and Le Tong’s long black hair danced inside the vehicle. The scene was beautiful, but Ji Rui slightly furrowed his brow. "Are you cold? Close the window!"
Le Tong shook her head, "Not cold!"
But even as she spoke, she subconsciously tightened the collar of her coat with her hand.
Ji Rui turned to look at her deeply, knowing that she sotis acted silly and childish, and he moved his hand, prompting the window in the passenger seat to slowly rise.
Le Tong turned her head, softly pleading, "Don’t close it, I haven’t felt the night breeze in a long ti."
Le Tong couldn’t rember when was the last ti she recklessly enjoyed the wind like this on the road.
Probably, ever since Baobao fell ill, she had been in a state of constant tension and stress, with no ti to enjoy this kind of serene and quiet peace after the day’s chaos.
Ji Rui glanced at her again, and without reason, his heart softened.
"Alright, half open then..." The window slowly opened halfway, his biggest compromise.
"Hmm..." Le Tong didn’t insist further, turning her head to look at the street scene outside the window.
"Besides roasted sweet potatoes, do you want to eat anything else?"
Previously, Ji Rui never paid much attention to what won Le Tong’s age liked. Now, thinking about it, he rembered there were quite a few female employees around her age at the Ji Family, who seed to love socializing, gathering to eat snacks and gossip whenever they had free ti. Among these snacks, there were ice creams, desserts, fried chicken, and beer.
But Le Tong seed never to engage in those, only busy like a spinning top around him as her boss, working non-stop, with her days filled with nothing but work and overti...
I must have deprived her of the simple pleasures in life for a woman her age, being an unromantic boss.
Le Tong suddenly turned her head, surprised to look at him.
"Besides roasted sweet potatoes, I can eat other things too?"
Le Tong’s expression of irrepressible excitent, with her dark eyes appearing exceptionally beautiful under the neon lights, and the slightly curved eyes full of smiles.
"Well, except for ice cream and cold drinks, you can have anything else!"
Ji Rui rembered Doctor Fu’s warnings, firmly not allowing her to touch anything cold or raw.
Le Tong was slightly disappointed, but the radiant face soon lit up with excitent under the night lights.
"Can we go to the snack street for grilled lamb skewers?"
Ji Rui paused for a mont, having ntally prepared himself for her to indulge in a feast, wasn’t expecting her to suggest grilled lamb skewers.
"How about, we buy so roasted sweet potatoes and find a Korean barbecue restaurant to sit down?"
Although Ji Rui had never been to the snack street for grilled skewers, he knew it mostly consisted of outdoor stalls, and with the current weather not being warm, although she wasn’t dressed lightly, he still worried she’d get cold.
Le Tong furrowed her brow, thinking Ji Rui was going back on his word.
"What the heck, you clearly asked what else I wanted to eat, and then didn’t let !" Le Tong pouted, evidently a bit upset.
That slightly resentful expression on Le Tong’s face made Ji Rui chuckle wryly.
"I was afraid you’d get cold standing on the street, not that I wouldn’t let you eat!" Ji Rui said helplessly, reaching over to smooth her wind-blown ssy hair.
"I just love eating that! Haven’t had it in a while, I really miss it."
Le Tong’s expression imdiately brightened, pointing in the direction ahead for Ji Rui to turn left at the next intersection.
"Do you often go there to eat?"
Ji Rui recalled that once, when he, Le Tong, and Yang Sheng worked overti into the night, they went to the snack street for supper.
"I used to go often with Yuan’er and other college classmates for grilled skewers. After graduation, everyone’s busy, so we went less."
Le Tong’s college life, aside from normal studies, mostly revolved around taking care of her mother and working. She wouldn’t tell Ji Rui that going to the snack street for skewers was a rare luxury for her at that ti, far from normal life.
Her words reminded Ji Rui of soone else.
"Did Luo Yifan often go with you guys too?" Ji Rui tried to keep his tone casual but honestly, thinking about Luo Yifan knowing Le Tong before him made him extrely agitated.
Le Tong nodded, feeling guilt-free about this and saw no need to lie.
"Yeah, you probably know, Yifan and Yuan’er are like siblings, almost always together, and there was a ti when he even got a dorm room at school and stayed for a while."
As good friends with Luo Yuanyuan, seeing Luo Yifan wasn’t unusual for her, was it?
Le Tong considered herself open and honest, but Ji Rui couldn’t help but envision the image of a beautiful, youthful Le Tong standing beside that guy Luo Yifan, sparking waves of jealousy within him.
"Could that big young master live such a life?" His tone held thinly veiled jealousy.
Le Tong was montarily puzzled, "What kind of life are you referring to?"
After a pause, she understood. "Do you an the ordinary college life?"
Ji Rui didn’t answer, indirectly admitting Le Tong’s words.
"Actually, Yifan is quite nice; he doesn’t have many of those pampered habits you’d expect from young masters."
Le Tong herself wasn’t sure why she was defending Luo Yifan at that mont, speaking positively on his behalf.
She knew very well that praising another man in front of her boyfriend was a big no-no, yet she couldn’t control her mouth, and the words of praise and acknowledgnt for Luo Yifan just slipped out unconsciously.
Ji Rui’s face suddenly darkened, and the air in the car dropped to freezing point.
"So, it seems you admire him quite a bit, hearing you say that?" Ji Rui humd thinly, his tone cold and bitter.
In contrast to the sullen Ji Rui, the smiling Le Tong seed in quite a good mood. "Huh, how did you know that?"
