Chapter 141 – Hide & Seek
[Living here all your life would suck.] (Syrus)
[I can confirm that statent.] (Luna)
Anlesa waved goodbye to a priest and fished, pouring a bucket of water on a small garden of plants.
Luna’s knowledge of the building, the work and routines of the staff, and the language used really helped them navigate around. They couldn’t escape talking to people at least so of the ti, and she knew tasks that could be done to help blend in with their surroundings.
[Should we reconvene here tomorrow?] Eva asked. It was getting late, and searching at night would grant them a great deal of suspicion if they were noticed. There wasn’t much they could do at that either. [If we get a night's worth of sleep in, that could co in handy for later.]
[That may be for the best…] (Luna)
It was a hard pill to swallow as they still didn’t have a clue about Jerry’s location.
[It’s like hide and seek, but we are hiding and seeking.] (Eva)
[Uh… yeah, I guess that is right.] (Syrus)
They tried looking in the cages and punishnt rooms during the movent of the guards, but Jerry wasn’t in any of them. They even doubled back to the house that contained the other children to see if he was brought back, but he was not.
[He must be further in the church…] (Luna)
[That big place in the middle?] (Eva)
[It’s where the higher-ups and saints who are stationed here live, and where the major reporting is done.] (Luna)
[Basically, the governnt building plus housing. Good to know.] (Syrus)
[But that’s more dangerous for us to enter, right?] (Eva)
[Yes, Lilly, much more dangerous. They despise authorised individuals roaming the halls, so an unknown face is going to be imdiately dragged to the side and questioned. Even if we trick them, at best we will be kicked up, at worst we will be locked up until a superior arrives, and that is if we successfully tricked them.] (Luna)
They tried exploring so of the underground areas of the Central–the na of the large, closed-off area around the cathedral was referred to as–but they didn’t find what they wanted and nearly got caught.
With well-tid movents on Syrus’ part and distractions thanks to Eva, they had managed to avoid their enemies.
[I don’t mind leaving now, we could make so explosives with the supplies we bought for the escape.] (Syrus)
[Yes… we have everything we need for a chemical reaction.] (Eva)
They had knowingly bought a bunch of supplies that Eva had collected to make so ergency options, but only Eva knew what else could be made with so of those said ingredients. Eva only just inford them during their rounds that they technically had enough ingredients to make a bomb.
[Crazy that what can be used for dicine can also be used to make a bomb.] (Syrus)
[dicine is considered the other side of poison, as it can easily beco one with the incorrect ratio or improper intake.] (Eva)
[Sure, but there is a big difference between poison and a bloody bomb.] (Syrus)
[It’s not all the ingredients.] (Eva
Eva had many different supplies in her bag; only so of them were ant for the basic potions, while slightly different ingredients were there to help make different conclusions. She didn’t purposely pack the materials for a bomb, but she didn’t do it unknowingly.
With their minds made up, they decided to leave the church and get so rest. Their thod for escape was for while the light was low, to make a leap over the wall. Climbing up from the inside wouldn’t be hard with their tools; it was just a matter of being quick and not being noticed.
They camped at the higher ends of the church’s locked-off zone, waiting for their chance as the moon rose and guards went to lock the gates. The reason they didn’t simply leave through the exit with the permission slip they stole was that the guards wouldn’t allow a priest to leave at this ti of day anyway, unless it was through the main gate.
Large wooden blocks were placed at the side entrances to stop people from going in, but there were guards still stationed at each exit.
[The security they have here is ridiculous.] (Syrus)
[It is a lot.] (Luna)
[I was talking more about how inefficient it seems, so many points of entry, each requiring two guards? That is simply asking to exhaust the workforce, there were at least ten main side entrances, which ans twenty people needed to be up at night. It would be better to make stronger doors and have people watch from the walls. You might even only need three, maybe six people out at night if they still want to be wary of potential attacks or escapees.] (Syrus)
[There was a reason why they stopped having people on the wall at night.] (Luna)
[Let guess, it’s not a good reason. Let narrow my guess as well. Soone fell off the wall; it is a little thin, and with enough drinks, anything is possible.] (Syrus)
[Half right, they had people stationed up there during an awful storm.] (Luna)
[I’d take it the storm was already happening before their shift started.] (Syrus)
[Correct, I will save ti and go to the end. Let’s say there was a lot of blood in the nearby streets by the end of the night, and in an attempt to ensure it never happened again, guards were forbidden from patrolling up there.] (Luna)
[I would like to say, I’m surprised such stupidity happened, but I have seen worse. So what was the excuse?] (Syrus)
[They said sothing about the Lord's passing judgent, removing the wicked from the church. They were worried that if it happened again in such a brutal fashion, the kingdom might question the state of the church.] (Luna)
It wasn’t an uncommon excuse that the church used when sothing bad that was noticed within their domain was found out that they had to quickly deal with it.
[Huh… weird. Actually, what do the Aurora Church idiots even worship?] (Syrus)
[Did you forget?] (Eva)
They had read so of the church’s scriptures before, as part of a learning lesson with Jen ages ago. Though it was Jen’s least favourite topic, as she found it boring, so it was wrapped up quickly.
[I did forget, and so of the wording people use is strange. Luna, does the Aurora Church worship one or multiple gods? Cause I heard reference to A God many tis, but people have also ntioned Lords?] (Syrus)
[There… are so complications to that. The only ones who truly know are the main church, and only the higher-ups ups if what is said is to be believed. But apparently, there is a God, that’s what the church believes, and that is set in stone. Now, where the difference cos in is the lesser ones. It is believed that serving him are four lesser gods, whom he and those four are referred to as the Lords. Now, it is debated whether those four are gods and should be held to so level of respect, or just angels that serve him.] (Luna)
[And? What is the main option?] (Syrus)
[That is up to people to decide; apparently it is part of a test, and that neither is wrong.] (Luna)
[They can co to their own conclusion on that, but all other religions are a lie?] (Syrus)
[Hmm. People are people, and the church will never change even if it is burned to the ground.] (Luna)
[...] Eva paused, not comnting.
Later on, when they were considering that the coast was clear enough.
[Haha, well ain’t it a lucky day.] (Syrus)
[Don’t get too excited, we still have to kill them first.] (Luna)
[Just… tell what you need to do.] (Eva)
They found one of their targets, one of the three Rooks, Berlean, was exiting through one of the side gates.
[Let’s make this quick, so we can sleep.] (Syrus)
