Now reading: Chapter 342: Zara vs Seris from Ultimate Dragon System: Grinding my way to the Top, a Fantasy novel by Pendroid.

The arena reset.

Fight 4.

Zara of Virex against Seris of Solmara.

The Virex sections gave Zara their aggressive territorial response—the sound they had been producing for their fighters all tournant, the announcent of belief rather than the celebration of it. The Solmara sections gave Seris their focused disciplined acknowledgnt. The neutral sections organized themselves around the attention the matchup deserved—two fighters whose abilities had both produced, in their descriptions, the particular tension of an interaction that wasn’t clean for either side.

Zara walked out of the Virex tunnel.

She was compact and quick in her movent—the specific quality of soone whose ability rewarded mobility, whose fighting style had been built around generating output from multiple positions rather than from a fixed stance. She moved across the arena floor with the energy of soone who had been waiting to move at full speed and was building toward it even in the walk across the floor.

Her palms were visible—open, facing slightly outward, the position from which the bursts generated. Nothing visible yet. The ability dormant but the posture already organized around its use.

The Virex sections gave her everything imdiately.

Seris walked out of the Solmara tunnel.

She moved differently from any fighter the tournant had produced—not the deliberate architectural precision of Sevon, not the economical precision of Kaizen, sothing more fluid. She moved as if she was always slightly negotiating with her own physicality, always aware that the relationship between her body and the physical world was more optional than it appeared. The looseness of soone whose body wasn’t always entirely committed to being solid.

Nothing visible about the ability. Nothing that announced it. Just the quality of movent.

The Solmara sections gave her their focused response.

"Zara," the announcer said. "Class 2, Virex Academy. Her ability—Mirage Burst."

A murmur from the crowd.

"Zara generates explosive bursts of superheated light from her palms and feet. The bursts produce both force and blinding flash at the point of detonation simultaneously—the light overwhelming visual processing, the force delivering concussive impact." He paused. "She can fire them as projectiles that detonate on contact, plant them on surfaces as delayed detonations, or chain them in rapid succession. The light and the force always arrive together." Another pause. "You cannot block one without being exposed to the other."

The crowd processed it.

"Her weakness—the bursts require her palms and feet to be unobstructed. Restrain the hands, pin the feet, and the ability cannot fire."

Then—

"Seris," the announcer said. "Class 2, Solmara Institute. Her ability—Hollow Body."

A different quality of murmur—more complicated, the crowd processing sothing that required a mont to fully construct in their understanding.

"Seris can make any part of her body temporarily intangible. A strike aid at her stomach passes through if she hollows that section. A blade aid at her arm becos irrelevant if the arm goes hollow before contact." He paused. "She can hollow multiple sections simultaneously. But hollowing costs her—a hollowed section also loses its own ability to exert physical force. She cannot punch with an intangible fist. She cannot run on intangible legs." Another pause. "The intangibility is a defense that removes offense from whatever it protects."

He paused once more.

"Her weakness—she has to anticipate the attack to hollow in ti. Attacks that arrive faster than her reaction window hit normally. And she cannot attack and defend the sa section simultaneously."

The crowd looked at both fighters.

At Zara’s open palms.

At Seris’s body—solid, present, ordinary in every visible way.

The matchup had a specific tension the crowd was already feeling—every burst Zara fired produced force and light simultaneously, the force hollowable but the light reaching whatever section was hollowed regardless. Seris choosing between the two components with every exchange.

The referee raised a hand.

Zara’s palms brightened—the superheated light building at her skin, the generation present and ready.

Seris stood with her arms at her sides. Waiting.

The referee’s hand dropped.

Zara fired imdiately—a burst from her right palm aid at Seris’s torso, the projectile traveling the distance between them at the speed the detonation behind it produced.

Seris hollowed her torso.

The burst passed through—the force component traveling through the intangible section without resistance, the detonation point arriving at empty space rather than solid matter. The force spent itself against nothing.

But the light detonated.

The flash fired at the point where the burst had reached Seris’s torso—inside the hollow section, inside her body, the light detonating from within rather than against the surface. The flash had nowhere to go except outward in all directions from the interior detonation point.

Seris’s vision whited out.

She had hollowed the torso to avoid the force. The light had detonated inside the hollow.

The crowd made noise—the specific reaction of people watching an interaction produce an unexpected result.

"The light detonates at the point of contact," the announcer said. "If the contact point is inside a hollowed section—the light fires from inside. The hollow doesn’t protect against the light. It makes the light worse."

Seris stood with her vision compromised—not completely blind, the flash producing a temporary overwhelming that was fading but hadn’t cleared yet.

Zara fired two more.

Seris hollowed her eyes—the specific section, the visual organs, making her eyes intangible so the light couldn’t affect them.

Intangible eyes couldn’t see.

She was blind either way—blind from the flash or blind from the hollow.

She moved.

Without her sight she used her other senses—the sound of Zara’s feet on the floor, the heat of the burst generation warming the air around Zara’s position, the specific directional sense that ca from knowing where the previous bursts had originated.

She moved toward Zara’s position—not a charge, a controlled advance, her eyes still hollowed, her torso solid again now that the flash had passed and the force was the threat.

Zara planted a delayed detonation—pressing her palm to the floor between herself and the advancing Seris, the burst setting into the stone with the delayed trigger that activated when soone stepped near.

Seris stepped near.

The detonation fired—force upward from the floor into Seris’s feet, light detonating from the floor surface outward.

Seris hollowed her feet.

The force passed through.

The light detonated against the floor beneath her intangible feet—the flash firing upward through the hollow foot sections, the light traveling through the intangible matter and detonating above it.

Against her shins.

The shins were solid.

The flash hit solid shin surface and the blinding effect arrived exactly where Seris hadn’t hollowed—the light finding the nearest solid surface above the detonation point and spending itself there.

Seris’s lower legs took the flash.

Not her eyes—her legs, the visual disruption affecting the skin rather than the visual organs, the flash’s blinding effect diminished when it hit skin rather than eyes but present, the thermal component of the superheated light burning slightly against the shin surface.

She kept moving.

Her eyes restored to solid—the hollow released, her vision returning. The brief blindness from the shin flash had been manageable but the thermal sting on her shins was real and present.

She was eight feet from Zara.

Zara fired a chain—right palm, left palm, right foot, left foot in rapid succession, four bursts from four different sources aid at different sections of Seris’s body simultaneously. The chain technique—forcing Seris to hollow four sections at once or take force from the ones she didn’t hollow.

Seris hollowed her torso, both arms, and her head.

Four sections. Simultaneously.

The four bursts passed through four intangible sections—the force of all four spending itself against hollow matter. None of the force landed.

Four light detonations fired from inside four hollow sections simultaneously.

The light from four interior detonations fired outward from inside Seris’s body in four directions at once—the flash erging from her hollowed torso, arms, and head outward into the surrounding space rather than inward against her solid sections.

The light went outward.

Away from her.

Seris had discovered sothing.

If she hollowed the section the burst entered—the light detonated inside and fired outward harmlessly into the space around her rather than against her solid sections. The key was hollowing the entry section rather than trying to hollow the exit surface.

Four bursts. Four interior detonations. Four outward flashes.

No damage.

The crowd reacted—the specific noise of people watching a fighter find the answer to a problem that had been dominating the fight.
