What was there was — a woman crying with her hair coming slightly loose from however she’d arranged it at the start of the evening, her floral dress adjusted around the full, round weight of her belly, her hand pressing the handkerchief to her eyes.

Her shoulders rounded with the crying. The specific, vulnerable rounding of soone whose usual posture had been temporarily overridden.

He looked at her.

His expression was what it was — concerned, present, the specific neutral warmth of soone who was exactly what he appeared to be at this mont.

His eyes, briefly, on her.

The moonlight finding the curve of her belly — the five months of it, the specific, full weight of a life being assembled inside a body, the way the floral fabric lay across it. The specific, unselfconscious way she rested her hand there, palm flat, as automatic as breathing.

Below, the shape of her through the dress — the specific, changed architecture of a body that was doing an extraordinary thing and was carrying all of it, the slight heaviness of her chest, the way the fabric lay differently than it would have six months ago. Not performing this. Just being it. The specific, unguarded way of a woman who was in the middle of sothing and was not managing her appearance right now.

He looked at her face.

She was still crying.

In the moonlight, with the specific quality of the light and the specific, raw openness of her expression — the way grief on a face that was usually composed produced a kind of honesty that composed beauty didn’t — she was looking at him.

’Like a woman made for sothing the world hadn’t given her enough ti to beco yet.’

He didn’t let this show.

"’Do you want water?’" he said.

She laughed.

The specific, involuntary laugh that arrived in the middle of crying when sothing was said that was too simple and too human to not land. She looked at him over the handkerchief.

"’I’m sorry,’" she said. The automatic apology of soone who has cried in front of a person they didn’t intend to cry in front of.

"’Don’t be,’" he said.

"’I’m a ss,’" she said.

"’You’re a woman who had a bad hour,’" he said. The specific, plain delivery of it. Not therapeutic. Not managing her feelings. Just the flat description.

She looked at the Ferris wheel above the canopy.

"’I did sothing wrong,’" she said. The question version of the sentence, where the question mark was suppressed.

He looked at her.

"’What makes you say that?’"

"’Because—’" She pressed the handkerchief flat against her palm. Looked at it. "’He slapped . And I keep thinking — what did I do? What was the thing I did? Because there must have been sothing. He has never—’" She stopped. "’In four years, he has never—’"

"’Yes,’" Raven said.

She looked at him.

"’He has never,’" he said. "’Which ans it was not from sothing you did. It was from sothing he was carrying. Those are different causes.’"

She was quiet.

The wind in the tree above them. The Ferris wheel.

"’Could there have been a misunderstanding?’" he said. The specific, neutral framing of it — not a defense of Vikram, not a challenge to her account. Just the honest question.

She looked at her hands.

"’I heard what I heard,’" she said.

"’What did you hear?’"

She pressed her lips together.

The specific, hesitating quality of soone who has words and is negotiating whether to say them. The words were specific and she had been carrying them for forty minutes and saying them out loud to soone who was not Vikram, who was not Priya, was — a different kind of saying.

"’He said—’" Her voice went quiet. "’Things. About . That I was never enough. That I didn’t understand what a man—’" She stopped. "’That she was different.’"

Raven said nothing for a mont.

Then: "’Vikram said this.’"

"’Yes.’"

"’In the toilet.’"

"’Yes.’"

He breathed. The specific, thoughtful breath of soone who was turning information over.

"’And the voice,’" he said. "’Was absolutely his.’"

"’I know my husband’s voice,’" she said. Not sharp. The flat certainty of it.

"’I know you do,’" he said. "’I’m not doubting you.’"

She looked at him.

The specific look of soone who has been doubted recently and is recalibrating to not being doubted.

"’But—’" His voice was careful. Not in the way of soone constructing a lie — in the way of soone choosing precision because the subject required it. "’era. You were outside a toilet. Listening through a door. In a state of — you had already seen sothing that upset you. Your entire body was already in the specific place where our ears and our brains confirm what we are afraid to confirm.’"

She opened her mouth.

"’I am not saying you are wrong,’" he said. Imdiately. "’I am saying: it is possible that a misunderstanding happened. I am saying: I have seen happy marriages end on less than this, over sothing that turned out to be—’" He paused. "’Not what it sounded like.’"

The bench under them.

The park sounds.

She was looking at him with the specific, complicated expression of soone who wants a thing to be true and is suspicious of wanting it.

"’Do you believe Priya?’" she said. The words coming carefully. "’Because I—’" A pause. The specific, halting quality of soone trying to say sothing precisely when the precision was uncomfortable. "’I definitely saw her. Going in. Coming out. With—’" She couldn’t finish it. Her face showing the specific, reluctant shape of sothing she had seen and was not able to put words to cleanly. "’The handkerchief.’"

Raven looked at the Ferris wheel.

A mont.

Then he chuckled.

Low. The specific, private register of soone who has received a piece of information and found it connect to another piece in a way that produced sothing between amusent and exhaustion.

"’So she betrayed too,’" he said.

Not loud. Not perford. Just the specific, quiet statent of soone confirming a thing they had perhaps already half-known.

era stared at him.

"’What?’"

He looked at his hands. The specific, looking-at-hands gesture of soone who was locating themselves in a mont.

"’You know what the real problem is,’" he said, "’with being a person like ? With having what I have?’"

She was still looking at him.

"’What?’" she said again. The word softer this ti.

"’You attract non-loyal ones,’" he said. Simply. "’Every ti. Like a law. I have money and I have — whatever I have — and what arrives, reliably, are people who want those things and have found a useful way to acquire them.’"

era was quiet.

"’Gold diggers,’" she said.

"’Gold diggers,’" he confird. Without bitterness. The specific, flat neutrality of soone who has nad a thing they have made a certain peace with. "’They co. They take what they need. They leave when there’s sothing better or when the extraction is complete. And I—’" A pause. "’I keep choosing them. Which ans the failure is in the choosing.’"

She sobbed.

The specific, sound of a sob that was about sothing else — not about him, but about sothing his words had triggered sideways. The specific, resonance of a thing said to soone who was already running their own version of the sa inventory.

"’But then why,’" she said, her voice wet. "’Why do you keep—’"
