The small, involuntary quality of it — her spine curving under his hand the way a spine curves when sothing warm and inford and unhurried moves down it. She felt the curve before she authorized it. She felt his hand register it — the slow, slight pause of fingers at the small of her back, the attending quality of soone noting that she had moved.

He pulled her closer. The hand at her ass and the hand at the small of her back working together — the full, encompassing quality of arms that had enclosed her without performing it, without announcing it, simply — closed.

She was inside his arms.

She could not account for how this had happened.

"Nnhh—"

The sound ca from her, muffled and low, into his mouth. Not protest. Not invitation. The honest sound of a woman whose nervous system was receiving information faster than her vocabulary could manage it.

He answered with the slow, deliberate drag of his lower lip over hers — the long, wet, suckling pull of it — "Mmpf—" — his lips working her lower lip with the thorough, unhurried quality of a man who had found sothing worth his full attention and was giving it all of that attention, now, in this alley, against all probability.

He parted.

The slow, pulling quality of it — his mouth drawing back by degrees, his lower lip catching hers one final ti before releasing, the wet, fine thread of saliva between them catching the alley light for one half-second before breaking.

He was breathing.

The quality of controlled breath from soone who had just been inside sothing and was choosing the pace of coming back out.

He looked at her.

The dark, level quality of eyes that had been in her mouth for — she did not know how long. She had stopped tracking ti approximately three minutes ago and did not currently have the infrastructure to restart.

She could not, at this mont, account for the state of her expression. This was unusual. She had good control of her expression. Had trained it across years of tables and boardrooms and rooms where the wrong expression cost real things.

She could not currently feel where the control was.

His thumb moved.

At the corner of her mouth. The slow, deliberate quality of a thumb tracing the line of sothing it had just been inside — the wet, swollen edge of her lower lip, the faint, remaining warmth of the kiss still sitting there.

She felt it in the back of her knees.

She felt it in the place where the prosthetic ended and the real leg began — the nerve-edge boundary of it, the place where sensation had a border, and in that border sothing was registering that had nothing to do with titanium or composite or specialist fittings.

He looked down. Not at her leg. At her. But with the quality of soone whose attention was complete — all of her, including the cane on the ground and the gun beside it and the way she was distributing her weight right now, and the loose dark fall of her hair, and the swollen evidence of what his mouth had just done.

"You ca so fast," she said. The words arriving in the lower register, the lower-than-usual quality of a voice in a body that had just received sothing it was still processing. "I expected you not to be here — especially after—"

She stopped.

’After cheating on my younger sister.’ The sentence she’d ant to finish. The position she’d prepared. The flat informational delivery she’d rehearsed.

She looked at him.

He did not look like a man who was waiting for an accusation. He did not look like a man who was uncertain about anything in this alley.

He looked like a man who had arrived at the place he had ant to arrive at and was now simply present in the arriving.

"I want to enter you," he said.

Quiet. The low, completely level quality of words delivered by soone who was not proposing or suggesting or performing want.

Just making a true statent. The flat informational quality of ’I want to enter you’ delivered the way soone says ’I know where north is’ — with the confidence of sothing already known.

He looked up.

His eyes on hers.

"Right here."

The words landed in the alley air and stayed there.

"Right here."

Not a question. Not even a suggestion. Just the flat, level delivery of a man announcing sothing that was already decided, the way weather announces itself — not asking permission, simply arriving.

Avriana flinched.

It was small. The involuntary, quarter-inch draw of her shoulders, the barely-perceptible tightening of her diaphragm — the kind of flinch a woman makes when her body receives information that her composure hasn’t yet agreed to process. She did not flinch at gun reports. She did not flinch at the specific pressure of high-stakes rooms or the particular weight of n who needed to be the most dangerous thing in any given space.

She had just flinched at two words from a man who had been in her mouth forty seconds ago.

’Get it together.’

She opened her mouth.

She did not get it together.

His hands moved first.

Not to her face this ti. Not the framing, attending quality of hands cupping a jaw. These hands went behind her — both of them, moving with the unhurried, inford confidence of a man who had already decided where they were going and had no comntary to offer about it.

His palms found her ass.

Full. Flat. Both hands at once, spreading wide against the silk — the silk that had been doing absolutely nothing useful all evening — his fingers curling under, gripping, the deep possessive clench of a man taking hold of sothing he had decided was his to hold.

He squeezed.

The sound she made was not loud. It was the low, bitten-off, involuntary "Hmph—" of a woman whose body had just been grabbed by soone who gripped like they ant it, and her composure had not been consulted.

He spread his hands.

Slow. The deliberate, exploratory quality of palms moving outward and upward, fingers dragging against the silk — mapping her, learning her, the obscene and unhurried thoroughness of it — the full, round, warm weight of her distributed between his two hands like he was asuring sothing he intended to own completely.

He pulled her against him.

The hip-to-hip quality of it. The full, warm press of his body against hers, and she could feel — she could absolutely feel — that the conversation they were having was not abstract.

She braced her hands against his chest.

He looked at her.

His eyes on hers. Dark, level, the attending quality of a man reading sothing very carefully.

And then, without any preamble whatsoever —

"You look gorgeous."

She blinked.

The blinking of a woman who had been braced for a dozen different things and had not been braced for that. Her hands were still flat against his chest. The alley was still the alley — the kitchen exhaust, the cold asphalt, the distant strip-hum, the dead man’s absence like a held breath. None of it had changed.

But he had said that.

’You look gorgeous.’

In this alley. In this specific set of circumstances. With his hands still full of her.

’What does that—’
