She didn’t look back, but her shoulders were shaking slightly.

Lucian couldn’t help it—a small, genuine smile tugged at his lips.

They’d stationed themselves at a table in the corner.
Books spread out in front of them. Looking like any other study pair.
But their eyes kept tracking toward the center tables.
Elena Marsh sat with three other first-years.
She looked small. Nervous. Dark circles under her eyes suggested she wasn’t sleeping well.
"She looks terrified," Seraphina murmured, not looking up from her book.
"Guilt?" Lucian suggested. "Or fear?"
"Both." Seraphina’s voice was hard. "Soone’s controlling her. Using her. And she’s too scared to say no."
"You sound angry."
"I AM angry." She turned a page with more force than necessary. "Whoever did this didn’t just attack you. They used a girl as a weapon. Made her destroy her own reputation to destroy yours. That’s—"
"Cruel?"
"Cowardly." Her eyes flashed. "If soone wants to co after you, they should have the spine to do it themselves. Not hide behind innocent people."
Lucian studied her profile. The sharp line of her jaw. The fire in her eyes.
When did she start caring this much?

"What?" She caught him looking.
"Nothing." He glanced back at his book. "Just... you’re really committed to this."
"Of course I am. I said you were innocent. If I’m going to say sothing that publicly, I’m going to be right about it." She turned back to her book, but her ears were slightly pink. "It’s about pride."
Sure it is.
"Right. Pride."
"Stop saying it like that."
"Like what?"
"Like you don’t believe ."
"I believe you believe it."
She kicked him under the table.
"Ow—"
"Shh. They’re moving."

She kicked and smiled about it. We’ve officially crossed into ’couple bickering’ territory. She hasn’t noticed yet.
Elena had stood up. Looking toward the entrance.
A boy approached.
Tall. Dark hair. Expensive cloak.
Exactly matching Mrs. Ashworth’s description.
Lucian’s breath caught. "That’s him."
Seraphina’s hand moved instinctively to her sword.
"Stay calm," Lucian murmured. "We need to hear what he says."
The boy said sothing low to Elena.
She went pale.
Stood imdiately.
Followed him out of the common room.
"Move," Seraphina said, already rising.
They abandoned their books and followed at a distance. Keeping to the edges of the corridor. Staying quiet.
The boy led Elena down a side hallway, away from the main buildings. Toward the old training grounds—mostly unused at night.
Lucian and Seraphina hung back, watching from the shadows.
The boy stopped in a secluded courtyard.
Turned to face Elena.
His voice carried in the quiet. "...told you not to waver. One more slip and—"
"I-I’m sorry!" Elena’s voice cracked. "I did what you asked! I said everything exactly how you told !"
"And now Ashenblade is investigating. The librarian is talking." His voice dropped dangerously. "Do you have any idea what you’ve done?"
"I didn’t an to—"
"Intentions don’t matter." The boy’s voice dropped to sothing dangerous. "Results do. And your results have been disappointing."
"I-I can fix it! I promise—"
"Can you?" He stepped closer, forcing Elena back against the stone wall. "Because from where I’m standing, you’re one conversation away from confessing everything. One guilty conscience away from running to Professor Ashworth with the truth."
"I won’t! I swear I won’t!"
"You’d better not." His hand shot out, gripping her wrist—not hard enough to bruise, but firm enough to make her gasp. "Because if my na cos up in this investigation, if Ashenblade or that pathetic Valemont bastard trace this back to ..."
He leaned in close.
"Your brother’s debts beco public.
And we both know what happens to students who can’t pay tuition."
She was shaking now. Full-body tremors.
"Please," she whispered. "I’m doing everything you asked."
"Then do it better." He turned on his heel. "And stay away from Ashenblade. If she corners you again, you know nothing. Understood?"
"Y-yes."
"Good girl."
Elena stood there, trembling.
Then collapsed against the wall, sobbing quietly.
