"Watch where you’re going, little one."
The Beastman Gu Ning had bumped into didn’t curse her out. Instead, he grabbed her shoulders to steady her swaying form.
Gu Ning quickly ca to her senses and stepped back.
"What’s wrong?"
Kloer noticed the commotion on Gu Ning’s side and walked over to her.
"Are you tired?" Kloer saw Gu Ning’s staggering steps. Combined with her attire, she really did look like a wobbly little penguin.
Gu Ning didn’t answer Kloer. She was terribly dizzy and could barely stay on her feet.
Kloer sensed that sothing was wrong. He placed a hand on her shoulder and was about to bend down to ask her what was the matter when a sudden gale blew across the top of the high wall.
Kloer’s keen sense of sll detected the scent of Mutant Species in the air. He looked up to see a dark cloud churning above them before it rapidly descended upon them.
"Enemy contact!!!"
Soone’s shout echoed out, and the green ergency lights on the ground instantly turned red.
The fiery trails of cannon shells streaked across the night sky. BOOM! The massive explosion jolted the dazed Gu Ning, clearing her head for a mont.
The light from the explosion also illuminated the "dark cloud" above them. It was a massive swarm of flying Mutant Species. Their wingspans ranged from five or six ters to over ten ters. Their forms varied, but they all possessed long, sharp beaks capable of chiseling through the solid city walls and hooked talons that could crush steel.
The flock of flying Mutant Species shrieked as they dove toward the high wall, their target the defense installations.
After a brief mont of chaos, the Beastn on the wall quickly entered combat mode.
The defense installations continuously fired shells at the swarm of flying Mutant Species, illuminating the pitch-black night sky as if it were day.
"This is a big one." Kloer quickly assessed the situation, scooped Gu Ning up by the waist, and hurried toward the elevator.
Gu Ning was extrely uncomfortable being held so tightly around her waist, and she felt the urge to vomit.
As he walked, Kloer said to her, "You go down first. Once it’s safe..."
Before he could finish, several flying Mutant Species broke through the defensive line and landed on the top platform. They flapped their enormous wings, knocking all the nearby Beastn to the ground, including Kloer.
Gu Ning tumbled from Kloer’s arms.
She lay on the wet ground, the constantly flashing red ergency lights dazzling her.
The curtain of rain was illuminated by the red lights, looking like a string of crimson pearls. Gunfire erupted all around her.
The few Mutant Species that had broken through the line flapped their wings, easily sending the towering Beastn flying. The tools and materials piled on the platform were also sent scattering everywhere, clattering across the ground.
"Little Gu Ning!"
Kloer shot the nearest flying Mutant Species in the eye. While it reeled back in pain, he scrambled up from the ground and ran toward Gu Ning.
He hadn’t taken two steps before another flying Mutant Species landed in front of him. It let out a piercing shriek and viciously pecked at him with its long, sharp beak.
Kloer reacted quickly, sidestepping its attack.
After several missed attacks, the Mutant Species angrily swiped at Kloer with its wing. The enormous wing was too fast for Kloer to dodge, and he was sent flying into a pile of steel beams.
More and more flying Mutant Species appeared, descending upon the high wall like a suffocating black mass.
One of the flying Mutant Species seed to have discovered sothing. It let out a series of clicking sounds, like a signal, and then flew toward a specific spot on the high wall.
The rain fell harder and harder. Gu Ning’s glasses were blurred by the water, and her vision beca a hazy ss.
Hearing the chaotic sounds around her, she simply took off her glasses. As she struggled to push herself up from the ground, she glanced to the side, and her heart stopped—
A long, sharp beak was re inches from her head. If she moved forward even slightly, it would pierce her skull.
Gu Ning held her breath.
The heavy, wind-driven rain beat down on her face.
Gu Ning stared at the Mutant Species before her, her eyes stinging from the rain, yet she didn’t dare to blink. Her body was completely frozen; she didn’t dare to move.
On either side of her, two more long beaks extended toward her.
Gu Ning’s body began to tremble uncontrollably. She was surrounded by Mutant Species.
A Beastman fired at them. The Mutant Species that was hit let out an angry shriek but didn’t attack the shooter. After crying out, it turned its head back to continue staring at Gu Ning.
A few more gunshots rang out. The Mutant Species on the outer periter grew agitated. They angrily flapped their wings and attacked the ddleso Beastn, but the inner circle of Mutant Species maintained their formation, guarding the center.
"Stop!" Kloer climbed out of the pile of steel beams and shouted at the Beastn who were raising their guns. "Put your guns down! All of you!"
The Beastn exchanged uncertain glances. Seeing that the Mutant Species were no longer attacking, they backed away and temporarily lowered their weapons.
"What’s going on with them? Why did they stop moving?"
"I don’t know. It looks like they’re surrounding sothing..."
"It’s a Mixed Breed."
The surrounding Beastn showed surprised expressions upon hearing this. ’They aren’t attacking that Mixed Breed?’
One Beastman said in a low voice, "Be careful. It might be about to mutate."
As he finished speaking, he raised his gun and aid it at the Dwarf hybrid surrounded by the flying Mutant Species.
The other Beastn followed suit, raising their guns as well.
Based on their knowledge of Mutant Species, this situation most likely ant that the Mixed Breed was about to mutate, and into a higher-level one at that.
’We have to eliminate it before it mutates. Otherwise, if a Mutant Species leader is born here...’
Kloer rushed forward and pushed down their guns. "Mutate? What mutate! Her mutation value is only at twenty-sothing percent! For fuck’s sake, put your guns down! Don’t provoke them!"
After speaking, he pulled a vial of lure from his pocket, crushed it, and sprinkled the contents on himself.
"Kloer, what are you doing?!"
"Shut up!"
Kloer picked up a steel rod from the ground. He began banging it on the floor to attract the Mutant Species’ attention as he walked toward Gu Ning.
"Little Gu Ning, don’t be scared. Don’t move," Kloer said softly, comforting her. He pulled a whistle from inside his collar, put it to his lips, and blew. The whistle emitted a sharp sound similar to the cry of the flying Mutant Species.
Imdiately, the flying Mutant Species surrounding Gu Ning turned their heads to look at Kloer.
Only the Mutant Species closest to Gu Ning didn’t move. It tilted its head, looking at her, and a crisp "DA-DA" sound ca from its throat.
Kloer continued to blow the whistle. The Mutant Species’ gazes shifted back and forth between him and Gu Ning.
Gu Ning found it increasingly difficult to breathe, her chest heaving violently.
The Mutant Species in front of her stretched its neck closer, its sharp beak passing right by her cheek.
’I’m going to die.’
All the Beastn held their breath as they watched the scene unfold, thinking the little Mixed Breed was about to be killed by this Mutant Species.
Kloer blew the whistle frantically, banging the steel rod with all his might. The Mutant Species around Gu Ning grew agitated, pacing restlessly between him and her.
The flying Mutant Species from other areas were also drawn by Kloer’s whistle. Seeing this, the Beastn near him rushed to stop him.
"Are you trying to get yourself killed?!"
Gu Ning listened to the deathly, piercing whistle, felt the cold, hard touch against her cheek, and slowly closed her eyes.
’Just make it quick.’
"Da..." The Mutant Species stretched its neck a little further, trying to press its head against Gu Ning. The mont it moved, a cold, silver light flashed before its eyes.
Gu Ning heard several dull THUDS and snapped her eyes open.
The head of the Mutant Species in front of her had been severed. The heads of the other Mutant Species around her had also been cleanly sliced off, falling to the ground.
Gu Ning stared in astonishnt at the figure of the Beastman who had suddenly appeared before her.
This Beastman was tall and slender, dressed in a silver-white combat suit, and wielded a long blade that glowed with a faint blue light.
Behind him, a pair of silver-blue wings hung low. Rainwater slid off the surface of his wings, not soaking the feathers underneath.
All around were other Bird Clan Orcs, dressed in the sa combat suits, wielding long blades, and possessing wings.
In the air, more of their comrades were fighting the Mutant Species. These Bird Clan Orcs flew at incredible speeds, able to pinpoint the weaknesses of the flying Mutant Species and kill them with precision.
The corpses of flying Mutant Species rained down from the sky.
"It’s the military." The Beastn on the high wall breathed a sigh of relief. "They ca just in ti."
Gu Ning didn’t even have a mont to feel the joy of being rescued before she saw the Bird Clan Orc in front of her slowly raise his long blade, its tip pointed directly at her.
His wings suddenly flared open, flinging water droplets everywhere. The gust of wind from his wings knocked Gu Ning over.
