Walking Away While Pregnant: Dear Ex-Husband, I Don't Love You Anymore Chapter 50
By the ti Elise and Alexander arrived at the hospital, it was already past ten o’clock at night. Lily’s nanny, Ms. Fisher, had only just reached the ergency departnt herself.
A cooling patch had been placed across Lily’s forehead, but her tiny face was still flushed bright red from the fever.
Alexander imdiately stepped forward and took his daughter from the nanny’s arms.
The little girl was burning up, half-conscious and groggy. Even in her feverish state, she kept murmuring one word.
"Daddy..."
Alexander gently cupped her hot cheek.
"Lily, Daddy’s here."
Hearing his voice, the little girl visibly relaxed. She snuggled into his chest and quieted down almost imdiately.
Standing nearby, Elise watched the way Lily’s brows remained tightly furrowed even in her father’s arms.
Her heart ached.
Madeline had once told her that because Lily had been born prematurely, her health had always been weaker than most children’s. She caught illnesses easily and was often sick.
Alexander hadn’t even been back in the country very long, yet this was already the second ti Lily had fallen ill.
She was so little.
Far too little to suffer like this.
Turning to Alexander, Elise asked, "Did you ever take her to see the doctor I recomnded?"
Alexander sighed.
"I’ve been tied up with a particularly difficult case lately and couldn’t find the ti."
His gaze dropped to his daughter.
"I was planning to take her in the next couple of days."
"It can’t be easy," Elise said softly. "Managing a law firm while raising Lily on your own."
After a mont’s thought, she added, "If you trust , I could take her there instead."
Alexander hesitated. "Would that be alright?"
"Of course." Then she glanced at the child in his arms. "Let’s wait and see what the hospital says first."
Alexander nodded.
The doctors diagnosed Lily with a viral infection accompanied by throat inflammation. They prescribed fever reducers and oral dication, advising them to take her ho and monitor her condition.
Ms. Fisher went to collect the prescriptions.
While waiting in the pharmacy lobby, Alexander held Lily against his shoulder and turned to Elise.
"It’s late. You should head ho." His expression carried genuine concern. "You’re pregnant yourself. You need rest."
Elise nodded.
"Alright. As long as Lily is okay, I’ll feel much better." She smiled reassuringly. "I’ll contact you tomorrow."
"I’ll walk you out."
"You don’t have to." She shook her head. "My driver is already waiting outside."
Then she looked at the child nestled in his arms.
"Taking care of Lily is more important."
Alexander didn’t insist.
Unexpectedly, just as Elise was preparing to leave, Lily woke up. The mont her eyes opened, she spotted Elise. Her fever-reddened eyes imdiately widened.
"Mommy!"
Elise quickly crouched beside her and touched her cheek.
"You’re awake, sweetheart. Does anything hurt?"
Lily pointed at her mouth.
"It hurts."
Her throat, most likely.
Elise’s heart softened.
"Be good, okay? The doctor already checked you. Once you take your dicine and rest, it’ll feel much better."
The little girl blinked up at her, then she stretched out both arms.
"Mommy, hug."
Seeing how pitiful she looked, Elise instinctively reached out.
"Co here. Godmother will hold you."
Before she could pick her up, Alexander stopped her.
"Maybe you shouldn’t."
His expression grew concerned.
"If she passes the virus to you, things could beco complicated. There are very few dications pregnant won can safely take."
Elise hesitated too.
He wasn’t wrong. If she got sick now, it could create unnecessary risks.
Slowly, she lowered her hands.
Using the gentlest voice she could manage, she coaxed, "Lily, Godmother needs to go ho tonight. I’ll co see you again tomorrow, alright?"
The second those words left her mouth, Lily’s lips trembled. Then she burst into tears. A loud, heartbroken wail echoed through the hallway.
Normally, she was such a sweet and sensible child. Tonight, however, nothing worked. No matter how they coaxed her, comforted her, or distracted her, she simply wouldn’t stop crying.
Her throat was already inflad. The crying quickly made her voice hoarse.
Alexander tried. Elise tried. Even Ms. Fisher took turns comforting her.
Nothing helped.
In the end, Elise could only ask a nurse for a mask.
After putting it on, she gathered Lily into her arms. The little girl imdiately wrapped both arms around her neck and clung to her desperately.
Her tiny body shook with sobs. "Mommy... don’t go."
The plea nearly broke Elise’s heart. She hugged her tighter.
"Okay. Godmother isn’t going anywhere. I’ll stay with you."
At first, Elise assud the child would eventually tire herself out and fall asleep.
But tonight, Lily behaved completely differently.
It was as though she feared Elise would disappear the mont she closed her eyes.
She lay quietly against Elise’s chest, exhausted and feverish, yet stubbornly refused to sleep.
No matter how much the adults persuaded her, distracted her, or bargained with her, she refused to let go of Elise.
Eventually, they had no choice. Elise accompanied them ho.
She reasoned that once Lily returned to familiar surroundings, she’d finally feel secure enough to rest.
Alexander’s apartnt was less than three kiloters from his law firm, about twenty minutes from the hospital.
The spacious two-hundred-square-ter residence was spotless and neatly organized.
The living room floor was covered with soft children’s mats, scattered with Lily’s favorite toys.
Ms. Fisher went to prepare water as the little girl needed to take her dicine first.
Lily pointed toward her bedroom.
"Mommy. Sleep."
Hearing that, Elise assud the child was finally ready to rest.
She carried her into the room.
The mont she stepped inside, she couldn’t help smiling. The room was practically a pink wonderland.
There was a princess bed fitted with electronic safety rails, while the ceiling had been transford into an artificial night sky filled with stars.
Just looking around the room, Elise could tell how much care Alexander had poured into raising his daughter.
Lily’s birth might have been marked by misfortune. But having Alexander as her father was undoubtedly her greatest blessing.
Ms. Fisher entered carrying a glass of water.
"Lily, let’s take your dicine before bed."
The little girl frowned instantly.
"No."
Alexander rubbed his forehead helplessly.
"She hates dicine."
He looked toward Elise.
"Every ti she gets sick, this is the hardest part."
Elise glanced down at the stubborn child in her arms.
"Want to try?"
Ms. Fisher imdiately brightened. She quickly prepared the dicine and handed it over.
"Then we’ll leave it to you, Miss Harper."
In truth, children’s dicine wasn’t particularly bitter these days. Even the anti-inflammatory dication was strawberry-flavored. Most children’s resistance ca from fear rather than taste.
Elise softened her voice.
"Lily, let’s take our dicine, okay?"
The little girl pouted. She didn’t refuse outright like she had with Ms. Fisher, but her expression clearly conveyed her reluctance.
Patiently, Elise coaxed her little by little.
Eventually, Lily relented.
"If Lily takes dicine..." Her large eyes blinked hopefully. "Mommy sleep with Lily?"
Elise smiled. "Deal."
She gently brushed a strand of hair from the child’s forehead.
"If Lily takes her dicine like a brave girl, Godmother will stay and sleep beside you tonight."
Only then did the little girl reluctantly take the dicine.
Afterward, Elise lay down beside her.
She fully expected Lily to drift off quickly so she could quietly leave afterward.
Instead, thirty minutes passed.
Then another.
The child seed determined to stay awake forever.
Like a tiny owl, she stared at Elise with wide, watchful eyes, refusing to close them.
Thinking the nightlight might be bothering her, Elise switched it off.
Then she asked softly, "Would you like Godmother to sing you a lullaby?"
Lily nodded eagerly.
"Yes."
Elise began humming a gentle lullaby. Her voice floated softly through the room.
Ti passed.
Another thirty minutes later, the bedroom door quietly opened. A sliver of light from the hallway spilled across the darkness.
Standing in the doorway, Alexander looked inside. The sight before him made him pause.
Elise had fallen asleep.
She lay on her side, peaceful and completely unaware, one hand resting lightly on Lily’s chest.
Lily was tucked beneath her favorite blanket. Even in sleep, the little girl still clutched Elise’s fingers tightly.
One big. One small. Both sleeping soundly.
Alexander’s gaze softened.
Moving quietly, he approached the bed. He picked up an extra blanket and carefully draped it over Elise.
A few monts later, he slipped back out and gently closed the door behind him.
Standing outside, he released the doorknob.
A warm smile curved his lips.

At seven the next morning, Elise stirred as she sensed movent beside her.
Frowning slightly, she opened her eyes. Imdiately, a tiny face filled her vision.
"Mommy, good morning!"
Elise froze. Several seconds passed before she finally rembered where she was.
She had actually fallen asleep in Lily’s room!
Rubbing her eyes, she sat up.
Beside her, Lily patted her own stomach with both hands.
"Lily hungry."
The adorable gesture made Elise laugh.
"You’re hungry?"
The little girl nodded enthusiastically.
"Let’s go see if breakfast is ready then."
"Okay!"
Carrying Lily, Elise walked out of the bedroom.
As they entered the dining area, Ms. Fisher was setting freshly cooked millet porridge onto the table.
Seeing them, she smiled warmly.
"Good morning, Miss Harper. Thank you for taking care of Lily last night."
She gestured toward the table.
"Breakfast is ready."
At that mont, the master bedroom door opened and Alexander erged, already dressed for the day.
Elise imdiately felt embarrassed.
"Sorry." She shifted Lily slightly in her arms. "I accidentally fell asleep last night."
Alexander chuckled softly.
"I’m the one who should apologize." His voice was gentle. "Lily wouldn’t let you go because she was sick. You ended up suffering along with her."
After a brief pause, he added, "I asked Ms. Fisher to check on you last night. When she saw you sleeping so soundly, she decided not to wake you."
Behind them, the nanny erged carrying a plate of stead buns.
A knowing smile briefly touched her lips.
Fortunately, she wisely chose not to expose her boss’s little lie.
Hearing that it had supposedly been Ms. Fisher who checked on her, Elise quietly relaxed.
After breakfast, she and Alexander discussed what to do next.
In the end, they decided to take Lily to the clinic Elise had recomnded.
The clinic was located on the outskirts of the city, roughly forty minutes away by car.
Before leaving, Elise sent a ssage to the elderly doctor, ensuring they could be seen imdiately upon arrival.
Alexander drove, while Elise sat in the back seat with Lily.
They arrived at precisely nine o’clock.
Alexander carried Lily while Elise led the way inside.
The mont they stepped through the entrance, a bright child’s voice rang out.
"Pretty Miss!"
Elise froze. Looking down, she found Robin already standing in front of her.
Her brows imdiately drew together.
"What are you doing here?"
The boy bead.
"I ca with Mommy and Daddy!"
He tilted his head back and looked at her excitedly.
"Mommy and Daddy are inside seeing Mr. Gray."
His smile widened.
"Mommy says Mr. Gray is really amazing."
The little boy practically bounced with excitent.
"When Mommy and Daddy finish their treatnt, they’ll be able to give a little sister!"
