Only the low hum of the treadmill filled the gym.

Wu Fan wore headphones as he maintained a steady pace. His heart rate stayed at 132, and the display had already passed six kiloters.

Sweat dripped from the tip of his nose, scattering into tiny droplets across the running belt.

When Amy pushed the door open and walked in, he slowed the treadmill and removed his headphones.

"Sothing urgent?"

"rle reported back."

Amy stood beside the treadmill holding a folder.

"The Walker horde has been cleared. Survivors from a nearby town want to join us. Two truckloads of people arrived. So caused trouble, but rle dealt with them."

Wu Fan lowered the treadmill speed to the minimum and stepped into a slow walk, waiting for her to continue.

"A few tried using moral pressure. They kept saying things like, 'My family used to work for the federal governnt.' rle slapped a couple of them around and abandoned the troublemakers. He only brought back the obedient ones."

Wu Fan nodded.

"People who can't recognize reality will eventually learn, unless they possess talents we urgently need."

He stepped off the treadmill and wiped his face with a towel.

"What else?"

"Hershel's family has arrived. When do you want to et them?"

Wu Fan glanced at the wall clock.

"In an hour."

He walked into the bathroom.

As hot water poured over him, he closed his eyes and let the stream run down his face.

The soreness from the six-kiloter run spread from his thighs to his lower back as lactic acid built up in his muscles.

He showered for a long ti.

Hershel sat on the sofa in the reception room, holding a cup of coffee without drinking it.

Maggie sat beside him, flipping through an outdated magazine before losing interest after only two pages.

Beth stood by the window, watching the training ground below. Groups dressed in black uniforms were drilling in formation, their slogans muffled behind the glass.

"Dad, this place is bigger than I imagined."

Beth turned around.

Hershel said nothing. He simply placed the coffee back onto the table. It had already gone cold, a thin film forming on the surface.

The door opened.

A young man walked in wearing a dark shirt with the sleeves rolled up to his elbows. His hair was still slightly damp.

He walked to the main seat, sat down, and smiled at Hershel.

"Sorry for the wait. I just finished running and was drenched in sweat. I didn't want to ruin the taste of your coffee, so I took a shower first."

Beth let out a small laugh.

Wu Fan glanced at her, the corners of his mouth lifting slightly before he turned back toward Hershel.

He stood and extended his hand.

"Wu Fan. Umbrella Corporation. The 'Boss' everyone keeps talking about."

Hershel stood and shook his hand.

His grip was rough and firm, the calluses on his knuckles earned through years of farm work.

"Hershel Greene. These are my daughters, Maggie and Beth."

Wu Fan shook Maggie's hand before turning toward Beth.

She stood there with blonde hair tied into a ponytail, blue eyes sparkling faintly, the remnants of a smile still lingering on her lips.

Wu Fan looked at her face and paused for a mont.

In the world of The Walking Dead, this was probably the most beautiful face.

Beth's cheeks flushed slightly beneath his gaze.

She tilted her head and smiled.

"If you keep staring, you're going to start drooling."

Wu Fan instinctively raised a hand to wipe the corner of his mouth.

Dry.

Beth burst into laughter, crisp and clear like glass marbles scattering across porcelain.

Wu Fan laughed as well before lowering his hand and turning back to Hershel.

"Your daughter has a great sense of humor."

Hershel coughed awkwardly, his expression complicated.

His eldest daughter had already been taken away by an Asian boy, and now his youngest daughter suddenly seed just as unsafe.

He picked up the cold coffee and took a sip, frowning slightly at the bitterness.

Wu Fan leaned back into his chair, his expression gradually becoming serious.

"Mr. Hershel, during China's Three Kingdoms era, there was a man nad Liu Bei. To recruit the strategist Zhuge Liang, he personally visited him three tis."

Wu Fan smiled faintly.

"Our invitation to you could also be considered a 'three visits invitation.'"

Hershel shook his head.

"I cannot compare myself to that Pri Minister."

"Don't say that."

Wu Fan waved his hand dismissively.

"The current situation is even worse than the wars of the Three Kingdoms. Our enemies won't show rcy. This is a war for the survival of humanity itself."

His voice wasn't loud, but every word struck like a nail hamred into the air.

"Food production and supply chains have already collapsed. Without crops, everyone will eventually starve."

He looked directly at Hershel.

"Your responsibility is extrely important, Elder Hershel."

Hershel remained silent for a long ti.

He looked at the young man before him and thought about all the leaders he had encountered throughout his life—politicians, generals, businessn.

So ruled through power.

So through wealth.

So through violence.

This young man relied on sothing else entirely.

Hershel couldn't quite describe it, but he could feel it clearly.

"I will use everything I know to teach people how to farm."

His voice was calm but steady.

Wu Fan stood and extended his hand once more.

Hershel rose and firmly grasped it.

Under the lights of the reception room, the young hand and the old hand clasped tightly together—one smooth, one rough, one youthful, one weathered.

Beth quietly watched from the side.

When Wu Fan spoke, there was a light in his eyes.

Not the shallow, hypocritical shine often seen in politicians on television.

It was sothing deep and steady.

Like a fireplace burning during a winter night—distant, yet sohow warm.

She watched him for a long ti.

Maggie nudged her arm gently and lowered her voice.

"Seen enough?"

Beth quickly looked away, her face flushing again.

"Who's staring?"

Maggie simply smiled without exposing her.

Hershel had already finished speaking with Wu Fan and was being escorted out by a staff mber.

Beth followed behind them, but before leaving, she glanced back one more ti.

Wu Fan stood by the window with his back facing her, lighting a cigarette.

Smoke drifted slowly upward between his fingers before dissolving into the sunlight.

She withdrew her gaze and followed her family out.

The hallway was quiet.

Hershel walked ahead slowly, as though carefully asuring every step through this unfamiliar place.

Maggie walked beside him while Beth remained behind them.

As she passed a nearby window, she stopped briefly and looked outside.

The soldiers dressed in black were still drilling on the training ground below, their synchronized chants making the glass tremble faintly.

Further away, workers welded sections of the periter wall together, bright sparks flickering through the evening air.

Beyond that, the lights of the town slowly began turning on one by one.

"Beth, co on."

Maggie called from ahead.

Beth snapped out of her thoughts and hurried to catch up.

At the corner of the hallway, an elderly man in a white lab coat suddenly erged from another corridor carrying a stack of docunts. He nearly collided with Hershel.

The old man adjusted his glasses awkwardly.

"Oh, sorry. Are you new here?"

Hershel nodded.

The old man smiled and extended his hand.

"Edwin Jenner. Virus researcher."

Hershel shook it.

"Hershel Greene. Farr."

The two n stood facing each other in the middle of the hallway—one dressed in a white lab coat, the other in a plaid shirt.

One studied viruses.

The other cultivated the land.

The staff mber beside them urged them onward, causing Edwin to snap out of his daze before hurrying away with his docunts.

Beth watched the old man disappear down the corridor.

"Did he say he researches viruses?"

Maggie nodded.

"This is the place where they developed the vaccine that stops dead people from turning into Walkers."

Beth stayed quiet for a mont before glancing back down the hallway.

Wu Fan was no longer standing by the window.

Only the curtains remained, fluttering softly through the open window like pale white wings.

She slowly withdrew her gaze and followed her father out of the building.

The night wind carried a chill.

Beth shrugged slightly and tucked her hands into her jacket pockets.
