“What’s all this?” asked the senior guard, a corpulent man with bear fur covering his massive arms.
“We are workers,” Chen responded calmly, his voice carrying the patience of soone who had dealt with stronger people for decades. “Many families don’t have jobs on the Goldcrest side. You know we must seek opportunities on the other side.”
The second guard, younger and with the reddish, scaly skin characteristic of infernal salamander users, frowned.
“This is irregular. We should call for reinforcents, I don’t like seeing so many people here.”
Chen watched the young man make a signal with his hand, expelling a fireball upward, probably trying to contact other patrols. But the signals seed to receive no response.
‘Yang and Wei’s distractions must be working.’
Chen noticed that most of the original workers who had been waiting began approaching his group. Desperation and hope were contagious emotions that spread through crowds like wildfire.
Chen nodded approvingly. ‘There is so strength in numbers.’
A crowd that made the two guards look increasingly nervous. Their body language shifted from casual authority to genuine concern as they realized they were severely outnumbered.
Chen waited until he felt the mont was perfect, reading the crowd’s energy and the guards’ growing uncertainty.
He discreetly raised his hand.
“Now!” he shouted.
The entire crowd launched itself toward the border gate simultaneously.
But the guards reacted imdiately with trained efficiency. The older man summoned his Silver 1 Earth Bear, a massive beast that imdiately began reinforcing the border wall, creating additional rock barriers and using its seismic senses to detect anyone trying to climb or dig.
Vines began advancing toward him… the elental disadvantage was obvious to the workers, who were overwhelmingly plant tars. Their green appendages snaked across the ground with purpose.
But it was the second guard who created the real problem. His Infernal Salamander materialized in a burst of heat and flas, imdiately creating a wall of fire that extended across the entire entrance and shielded the bear tar.
The fire wall was impressive, rising several ters high and radiating heat that completely stopped the crowd’s plants from advancing. Most had plant beasts that were especially vulnerable to fire, the weakness exploited perfectly.
“The frogs!” Chen shouted. “Use the water!”
Four people in the crowd had frog-type beasts, but none were water specialists. Their aquatic attacks were weak, barely sufficient to create steam when they contacted the flas, but not powerful enough to extinguish the wall.
Even with the help of 2 more new water users on Fern and Reed the 200% extra Elental Fire control on an adult Infernal Salamander was too strong.
So earth insects also tried to help, hurling rocks and sand to smother the flas, but it wasn’t enough either. The guard with the salamander had too good elental control, and his Silver 1 beast was of vastly superior quality to most beasts here.
The situation seed desperate. The fire wall intensified, and the Earth Bear had completed its fortifications, making it impossible to flank the position.
Then Wei descended from the sky like an avenging cot.
His Silver 2 Manticore dove directly toward the salamander guard, completely ignoring the fire wall that automatically extinguished when its creator was struck from above. The aerial attack was perfectly tid and executed.
The impact sent the guard rolling across the ground, his concentration broken. The coordinated defensive position collapsed in seconds.
The bear guard reacted imdiately, directing his massive beast against Wei. But Wei had already anticipated this, his manticore intercepting the bear with claws and stinger, using its aerial speed advantage to avoid getting trapped in ground combat that favored the bear.
The salamander guard recovered quickly, preparing to attack the newcor with concentrated flas. But before he could do so, Reed leaped from the crowd.
The increases from his new obsidian turtle gave him sufficient strength for his blow to have small but real impact. His fist connected with the guard’s jaw, sending him staggering backward.
Fern followed imdiately, her vines enhanced by the turtle’s water reaching the stunned guard, wrapping around him before he could recover his balance. The coordination was flawless.
The rest of the crowd followed their example. Dozens of vines and roots from plant beasts extended, trapping the salamander guard in a green tangle that tightened increasingly.
“The bear one too!” soone shouted.
The second guard, seeing his companion being overwheld by the crowd, tried to retreat. But it was already too late. The spontaneous coordination of a hundred people with plant beasts, even if weak Iron ones, created an inescapable net.
Both guards disappeared under waves of aggressive vegetation and the feet of desperate refugees running toward freedom.
“Cross! Cross now!” Chen shouted, directing the flow of people through the breach Wei had created.
Families ran, carrying children and belongings, crossing into free territory. The sight was both beautiful and heartbreaking, hope made manifest in human movent, but tinged with the desperation that had driven them to this point.
But when Chen looked back, he could see dust rising in multiple directions. So enemy reinforcents had finally noticed the signs of trouble and were heading toward their position.
“Wei!” Chen shouted. “Reinforcents!”
Wei looked toward where Chen was pointing, his mind imdiately assessing the approaching threats.
“Keep crossing!” Wei responded, positioning his manticore defensively. “I’ll cover you!”

Kharzan struck his desk with such force that the rock cracked. The reports spread before him like a litany of failures: six border gates compromised, hundreds of workers crossing into Selphira’s territory, and worst of all, his own allies fighting among themselves instead of helping control the situation.
“Those damned Blackwoods and Strahlfangs!” he roared, his golden lion pulsing with fury beneath his skin. “They’re killing each other while our territory bleeds!”
His assistant, a nervous man, maintained prudent distance. The air around Kharzan crackled with power, making approach dangerous for anyone without sufficient protection.
“Sir, the commanders report that the situation began with small isolated insurrections, but…”
“But it spread like fire because my allies are more interested in their family feuds than maintaining order!” Kharzan rose, pacing like a caged lion. “What happened so suddenly?”
“The first crossings seem to have inspired others, sir. When people saw it was possible…”
“People saw weakness,” Kharzan corrected bitterly. “They saw we were divided and took advantage.”
The assistant nodded nervously. “There are also reports that Selphira’s forces have advanced to the maximum permitted limit of the border wall. Once workers reach that point…”
“It becos impossible to follow them without provoking a major incident,” Kharzan finished the sentence. “Of course. The old witch knew exactly what she was doing.”
