Capítulo 708: Chapter 622: Everyone Really Wants to Move Things Forward

Professor Ji looked over.

He still regarded Professor Wu with so importance.

After all, although Cultural Psychology’s status isn’t as high as the physiological or neurological directions within the larger category of psychology, it is still a field with a very macro perspective.

Research on the localization of psychology and its combination with traditional culture also tends to produce publishable papers.

He saw Professor Wu rub his temples and furrow his brows tightly: “I don’t care what you all think, anyway, I’ve decided not to communicate with the disaster-hit people in the shelter anymore; it’s utterly ineffective.”

He said, “Starting tomorrow, my research team will only engage in dialogue with the rescue personnel, shifting the focus to ‘Group Hysteria Protection’ or ‘Intervention for Group Hysteria by Rescue Staff’.”

Professor Ji was taken aback: “Teacher Wu, what’s going on here?”

Professor Wu sighed heavily: “If they won’t say, then I will—Teacher Ji, we are all involved in basic research, so we usually deal with participants a lot, right?”

Professor Ji nodded.

“And elderly people are inherently part of the ‘special population,’ making data collection from them quite troubleso. Many tis, even though we use questionnaires for data collection, we end up doing interviews—that you understand, right?”

Professor Ji nodded again.

Even if Professor Ji himself doesn’t conduct research related to Elderly Psychology, he must have read related journal literature while browsing journals—after all, Elderly Psychology is indeed quite publishable. When there are no significant projects, finding a manageable elderly-related topic to hand over to students might result in a core paper in the fourth tier.

If not a core paper, a conference abstract would suffice, fulfilling at least the master’s graduation requirents.

However, data collection from elderly people is indeed troubleso—just as Professor Wu ntioned, elderly people belong to a “special population,” classified alongside autism, hearing impairnt, visual impairnt, and so on.

Professor Wu said: “I originally intended to trace the local roots of the Dragon King Faith and the paths of rumor dissemination, attempting to understand the cultural symbol system behind the symptoms.”

The approach in Cultural Psychology research typically focuses on exploring how specific cultural backgrounds shape individual psychological processes and behavior expressions, particularly how collectively shared symbols and aning systems influence the understanding and response to trauma and stress.

“Initially, I wanted to attempt an analysis using Cultural Semiotics. First decoding symbols, hypothesizing that the ‘Dragon Scale Pattern’ and ‘Dragon Rope’ are not random symptoms but symbols with specific cultural anings. ‘Scale’ symbolizes contact and alienation with non-human forces, while ‘rope’ symbolizes constraint and punishnt.”

“By understanding this symbol system, our group hopes to find intervention thods that can ‘dialogue’ with it, for instance, by reconstructing the positive aspects like ‘protection’ and ‘rain-making’ in the Dragon King Faith.”

“If everything goes smoothly, we might be able to provide the entire intervention team with a deep cultural understanding frawork to avoid cultural conflicts.”

These words made all the experts nod, including Professor Ji.

Theoretically, regarding the Group Hysteria manifested in forms like the ‘Dragon King,’ Professor Wu should play a pivotal role among the experts on-site.

“It’s a very good plan, Teacher Wu.” Professor Ji advised, “So how did it turn out like this, to the point that you want to abandon it?”

Professor Wu’s mouth twitched: “The plan was like that—but in reality, I took a recorder to chat with those elderly participants, wanting to record customs and legends, to analyze the ‘functions’ of the Dragon King in different contexts, initially aiming to find a cultural entry point for intervention…”

Professor Wu gave a wry smile: “Result… ha!”

As he packed his things, he looked around indifferently and launched a sweeping remark.

“Professor Sun’s CBT forms, Professor Li’s machines, and Teacher Wang’s Humanistic Listening might not touch the core of the problem. Those elders truly believe that the ‘Dragon King’ is at work. Our set of language, they neither understand nor believe in. I feel like we’re using the laws of physics to explain a mythological world, not on the sa frequency at all—at least at this stage.”

“Our scientific explanations, whether cognitive, physiological, or humanistic, if not integrated into this cultural symbol system, it’s like speaking a foreign language to them. When I explained to an elder that their skin condition might be a collective stress response, the reaction I got was—”

Professor Wu mimicked vividly: “‘Leader, I don’t understand what you’re saying, but I know, if the Dragon King wants to give you trouble, it’s far more severe than any ‘response’!'”

“If we continue, it definitely has to beco a large longitudinal study, extending the tiline significantly.” Professor Wu said, “But this project was initially a race against ti.”

As Professor Wu spoke, he packed docunts, instructing students to put everything into briefcases: “Anyway, I’ve left all the participants’ contact details. The cultural aspects can be explored slowly after the disaster relief is over; at this stage, I don’t plan to intervene with those elders anymore.”

Having neatly packed up, Professor Wu turned and left.

Professor Ji didn’t even rember to reach out and say sothing to persuade him, as Professor Wu’s figure had already disappeared.

Highly uncollegial.

Professor Ji’s expression turned grim.

The atmosphere inside the tent suddenly returned to silence, just like when Professor Ji had just arrived.
