Now reading: Chapter 812 - 678: Examiner: A High Preliminary Score Doesn’ from Who would study psychology unless they had some issues?!, a Urban novel by Panda's Big Log Cabin.

Five minutes ago.

Almost right at the start of the interview, the professors arrived fashionably late.

"Hey, Teacher You, just arrived?"

"Yes, Mr. Chang, you just got here too."

"Been quite busy recently."

"Busy, it’s good to be busy..."

After a brief greeting, the professors exchanged polite refusals over their seating arrangents a few tis before finally settling down.

Knock knock knock—

The exam coordinator ca in right after knocking: "Professors, here is the list of candidates for today."

"Oh, alright. How many do we have this year, and how many arrived today?" the professor sitting on the outermost seat nodded, looking as though he had never seen the candidate list before.

The coordinator stated a number, then handed each examiner a sealed envelope in turn.

Graduate students working part-ti as exam coordinators then set up the venue, served tea, handed out pens, and set up caras behind the professors.

Everything was in order.

"Don’t turn on the caras yet," one professor instructed, then opened the sealed envelope, taking out a stack of forms and instructions, and started reading them carefully.

As they read, the professors couldn’t help but mumble to themselves: "Oh, so that’s the process this year..."

Seeming like it was their first ti seeing the interview process.

Occasionally, a professor puzzled over the process in the instructions would turn to the graduate student coordinators for help; if they didn’t know, they would contact the student affairs office for clarification on the spot.

When they said they were busy right when arriving at the exam room, the professors weren’t wrong. Serving as examiners for interviews was just an administrative task assigned by the departnt. It was already quite an effort for them to carve out ti from their busy schedules just to deal with it, let alone prepare ahead of ti.

As for missing out on talent because they don’t care about entrance exams — by the ti students reach graduate school, what talent is left to fight over?

Unlike the scenes where top college entrance exam students have admissions staff filling their living rooms, offering all sorts of conditions like an auction, that doesn’t happen at the graduate level.

Quite the opposite, at this stage it’s the students scrambling for a good advisor.

Once the results from this week’s interviews co out, all the pre-admission emails from candidates will flood the professors’ inboxes; they’ll be spoiled for choice.

So professors even intentionally leave their recent research achievents off the school’s website, finding it a hassle and trying to appear less impressive to avoid being overwheld by candidates.

"Old Guo, how many slots do you have this year, how many students do you plan to take?" The professor sitting in the first seat on the left asked aloud while looking at the forms.

"I don’t want to take any new students," the professor in the second seat on the left replied.

"Don’t talk nonsense, I don’t want to either, but the dean has a target," Professor Zuo Yi laughed, "and if you don’t choose now, students left unchosen might be forcibly placed in your group later."

Professor Zuo Er sighed upon hearing this, knowing Professor Zuo Yi spoke the truth: "Let’s see today, maybe pick those with a solid foundation or so research ability, at least to graduate smoothly, otherwise..."

He had a look of looking back on unbearable past experiences.

The professor sitting in the first seat on the right joined in the conversation: "I heard Old Guo, you almost had a student delay graduation this year?"

Professor Zuo Er displayed a look of utter exhaustion: "He only sent the draft two weeks before his defense... Didn’t even clear up his definitions in the paper, and the formatting was a ss too—I stayed up two nights to barely make it readable..."

This made the professor in the second seat on the right empathize greatly: "I heard about that student, you even bragged to back then. I think his entrance exam scores were quite high when he ca in?"

Professor Zuo Er nodded feebly.

"Speaking of which, I heard from my group’s students that there’s a candidate this year with an entrance exam score that’s astonishing," Professor Zuo Yi remarked further, "Sothing like over 490, the highest score in history. And I heard the difficulty of the questions this year was quite high, so the score is significant, but..."

Professor Zuo Yi didn’t finish his sentence, but the other professors present understood the implication.

Graduate studies, it’s more than just entrance exam scores. How much a student achieves after enrollnt really depends on whether their advisor involves them in projects. If you end up with the wrong advisor, the top candidates might even struggle to graduate, while the last ones might secure a direct PhD offer by their second year.

And to be frank, can entrance exam scores really reflect a student’s quality? Not necessarily.

To put it harshly, truly good students who do well in studies and research have already been pre-admitted; those who "fall" to take the national exams have already been sifted.

"However, this top scorer should be given special attention. To score that high ans at least a solid foundation, likely guaranteed approval barring any unforeseen circumstances," Professor You Er said, "And if the interview doesn’t impress, they can still be assigned to the absent professors today..."

The professors all laughed.

"Let’s divide up the tasks then. Later, Old Guo and I will ask more professional questions, be more serious," Professor You Er gestured towards Professor Zuo Er, with their seats in the middle.

He then spoke to Professors Zuo Yi and You Yi, seated at the edges: "Old Chang and Old You, if the students seem nervous, you could ask them so personal life questions, so the interview isn’t too stressful."

"Alright." The professors readily agreed.

After chatting and distributing the tasks clearly.

Professor You Er looked towards the exam coordinator: "Turn on the caras, start calling in the candidates."
