Chapter 828: Chapter 685: Dissociation (2)

“If you were to use a term from comparative psychology to sum it up—”

This is the mont to be a bit more professional, involving the educational part of counseling.

Nan Zhubin looked into the visitor’s eyes: “—we call this phenonon ‘dissociation’. ”

“Dissociation?” the visitor repeated the word.

“Yes, dissociation.” Nan Zhubin nodded, “Simply put, dissociation is a psychological defense chanism that kicks in when a person encounters trauma, stress, or overwhelming emotions. It causes a temporary disconnection in functions like mory, perception, and experience of environnt, which are usually integrated, to prevent one from being subrged by intense emotional pain.”

Nan Zhubin placed his right hand over his left, making a gesture of being “engulfed by water”.

Nan Zhubin continued to explain: “This is an automatic protective chanism of the brain under overload, allowing you to temporarily not face the pain directly. It’s a very normal psychological reaction, not a ‘special issue’ of yours, certainly not an ‘abnormal’ manifestation.”

He paused, observing Chen Lizhou’s reaction: “When experiencing sothing like the sudden death of a loved one or a major accident, quite a number of people might display similar situations.”

“It’s your body spontaneously working to protect you, helping you cope with the difficulties you’re currently facing.”

After hearing Nan Zhubin’s words, the visitor revealed an expression of having learned sothing new.

However, there wasn’t the familiar “sudden realization” that was emotionally moving.

Just the feeling of a student thodically learning a new formula that might be useful later.

“So my current issue is what you call…dissociation?”

Nan Zhubin nodded, then shook his head.

“Strictly speaking, dissociation is just a manifestation, like ‘coughing’—caused by a throat infection, viral flu, or perhaps just because you smoked a couple of extra cigarettes yesterday.”

In more academic language, dissociation is a ‘symptom group’ encompassing various presentations, with the severity levels of different subtypes varying greatly.

“It’s like the ‘treating the symptoms’ versus ‘treating the root cause’ in dicine.” Nan Zhubin used his usual taphor, “Your dissociation is part of the ‘symptom’. As for the fundantal issue—”

Nan Zhubin looked at the visitor’s expression: “I recomnd you go to a psychiatric departnt at a hospital for a more professional diagnosis.”

As expected, upon hearing Nan Zhubin’s suggestion, the visitor slightly frowned.

This was one of the rare emotional expressions in today’s counseling process.

Albeit a negative one.

But this “recomndation to seek dical treatnt” was sothing Nan Zhubin had to convey in counseling.

“Psychiatric departnt?” the visitor said, “I can’t take ti off, let alone for this reason. The impact on my work would be significant…”

Nan Zhubin listened and nodded.

After the visitor expressed all his concerns, he explained them one by one: “I completely understand your concerns. They indeed make a lot of sense.”

“However…”

Nan Zhubin didn’t habitually extend his fingers to count, as it might be visually clearer but also increases social aggressiveness.

“General dissociation might just be like a ‘fragnt’ after drinking too much. For example, suddenly forgetting what happened in the last ten minutes, or experiencing that ‘observer’ feeling like you just ntioned earlier at so point in the day. No need to pay attention; it will resolve by itself.”

“But the situation you described has been lasting a long ti. After all, your wife passed away a month ago, and you’ve been in this state most of the ti since then, right?”

The visitor was silent for a mont, nodding: “It’s more like I’ve been in this state all along.”

“Then it requires appropriate attention.”

“Obtaining a dical level proof can assist with the counseling process we might have later.” Nan Zhubin didn’t put a definitive end to the matter, affirming the necessity of continued counseling in the future.

This gave the visitor a greater sense of autonomy.

“With this proof, whether the result is ‘no need for further concern’ or ‘we need to spend more effort addressing it’, at least it’s being advanced as a problem, or a…’project’.”

Nan Zhubin looked into the visitor’s eyes: “This is beneficial for both your work and your interactions with your daughter, parents, and in-laws.”

Based on prior assessnts of the visitor, Nan Zhubin chose a taphor.

Since the visitor is currently in a rational thinking mode, reasoning was shared.

The visitor, who was initially about to say sothing, indeed fell into contemplation.

Nan Zhubin added: “Besides, general hospitals’ psychology or psychiatric departnts do have office hours that don’t align with your free ti…”

Nan Zhubin smiled: “But I can contact a reliable hospital and doctor for you, arranging a weekend overti diagnosis, so it won’t interfere with your work and our goals will be achieved.”

Having been in Beidu for so ti, Nan Zhubin has sowhat established his own network.

“You can get my assistant to add your contact, and if there’s a result from my end, he’ll communicate with you.”

Nan Zhubin continued: “Psychiatric diagnostic information is strictly confidential, and apart from you, no one can access it at will. Even I can only know when you decide to tell .”

“And my information is confidential too.” Nan Zhubin smiled, “If you tell the result in the context of EAP (Employee Assistance Program), it won’t affect work, then I’ll only inform the company of the ‘non-disruptive’ outco, which is what you hope for most.”

“And if not, I’ll also tell the company ‘no comnt’. What happens after that, we’ll discuss together.”

This series of comprehensive explanations completely relieved the visitor’s concerns.

“In that case, I really have no reason to refuse.”

After thinking for two breaths’ ti, the visitor nodded: “Then I’ll have it checked.”

Nan Zhubin nodded: “Alright, if you don’t have any other questions, today’s counseling is about finished.”

As for whether the visitor will actually go to the hospital afterward, that’s beyond Nan Zhubin’s control; he’s done his part.

He reached out and took a few tissues to hand to the visitor.

Due to repeatedly twisting a ballpoint pen, the visitor’s hands were covered in ink marks.

Not just his hands, but even the pen’s barrel had beco a dark ss.

During the counseling session, the visitor had been wiping them, but couldn’t get them clean.

For a mont, the current scene beca sowhat comical.

After the session ended, the consultant and the visitor actually started another round of discussion on how to clean it.

“How about leaving the stuff here, I’ll take care of it.” Nan Zhubin finally said.

“No, I brought it in, and I want to take it out.” After thinking for a breath of ti, the visitor shook his head, refusing.

Then he thought for a mont, directly took out a wad of tissues from the table, moistening them with water from his cup.

Once he wiped the heavy ink stains off his hands with the wet tissues, he imdiately started cleaning the ballpoint pen’s barrel.

After this whole process, although his hands still had black marks remaining, likely requiring soap or handwash to clean completely, the ballpoint pen was almost as it was when he brought it in.

Even a bit cleaner.

The visitor finally stood up: “Then I’ll be leaving first, sorry to bother…Teacher Nan.”

“You’re quite welco.” Nan Zhubin smiled and waved gently.
