Chapter 159: Black Widow

Very quickly, Cindy found a chance to fight back.

He seized on the mont Elsa made a mistake, swung his greatsword, and brought it crashing down onto the formidably hard armor.

Elsa had no ti to dodge and took the full brunt of that crushing blow.

The sheer impact sent her entire body trembling uncontrollably.

Her lungs shook relentlessly within her chest, and a wave of dizziness and nausea surged violently up from deep inside her.

But…

That was all it amounted to.

Despite that devastating strike:

Not a single point of real damage had been dealt to her body.

On the armor, nothing remained but a faint white mark.

And Cindy's greatsword—the instant it made contact with the armor—was as though an egg had been dashed against a boulder.

It shattered completely into pieces and scattered across the ground.

Cindy stared at the broken blade in his hands and went completely blank.

Elsa likewise halted her assault, staring at Cindy's utterly shattered weapon in disbelief.

In that mont, Cindy had lost his last ans of defense.

The hand Elsa held the blade with began, suddenly, to tremble.

If Cindy still had a weapon in his hands:

Cindy, who knew her so well, would surely have been able to block every single one of her attacks.

Even if she went all out.

But Elsa had severely underestimated her own strength.

Or rather—she had severely underestimated just how staggering the power this equipnt granted her truly was.

And for a warrior who had lost his weapon:

Cindy, at this mont, was like a toy left entirely at another's rcy.

The hand that held the blade—for a long, long ti—could not bring itself to strike.

And yet…

A cold, still gaze seed to settle upon her.

A chill crept up her spine, one wave after another.

Elsa felt a violent shudder tear through her very core.

She could not defy Viktor.

That sensation was as though it were commanding her—as though it had seen straight through her soul and her heart entire.

Then, in an instant, an absurd thought rose in her mind.

'Kill Cindy.'

Kill… him?

In that single mont, it was the only thought left in Elsa's mind.

The impulse swiftly consud her entire consciousness. She could no longer control her own hand, could no longer hold back the chaos tearing through her reason, could no longer resist the voice reverberating endlessly inside her head.

Shlick—

The blade pierced through Cindy's chest.

The instant the steel passed through, Elsa's eyes went wide.

Cindy stared in equal disbelief at his own punctured chest.

Elsa's hand gripped the hilt—a single thrust driven straight into his chest cavity.

Blood—scorched by the blazing flas—never even managed to flow before it was dried away entirely.

Without realizing it, without Elsa herself being aware:

In a state of complete unconsciousness:

She had killed Cindy.

'Well done.'

The cold voice in her mind rang out, flat and unmoved.

In an instant, Elsa felt all strength drain from her body. She looked at the horrifying wound across Cindy's chest and felt a despair beyond all asure.

She looked around helplessly, watching Cindy's last flickering breath fade away at a terrifying speed.

Cindy opened his mouth, as if he wanted to say sothing.

But the next second—

Crack—

A sound of shattering reached her ears. The space around her fractured like a series of mirrors breaking apart.

The space cracked apart layer by layer, and gradually—reality returned.

Elsa looked around in despair.

On all sides: nothing but cold stone walls, hung with many blackened, rusted iron restraints.

And Cindy's four limbs were completely shackled—locked fast to a wooden post.

All at once, Elsa looked down at her own hand, trembling.

That hand of hers was still gripping the blade with an iron hold.

The blade had already run straight through Cindy's chest.

In the end, all she could see was Cindy's eyes—wide open and staring—and the blood trickling from the corner of his mouth.

He could not even speak. His neck went slack, and he breathed his last.

Elsa released the hand gripping the blade. Her mind collapsed entirely.

In that mont, she understood completely.

From beginning to end, it had all been nothing but an illusion.

There had never been any battle with Cindy. From the very start, what she had arrived at was this secret chamber.

A Cindy with no ans of resistance—imprisoned on that wooden post the entire ti.

Left entirely to her, as she launched her attack against him.

Everything had been nothing but a vision playing out inside her illusion.

Until, at the very end, she had driven her own sword through Cindy's chest with her own hands.

At that mont, even a Cindy without a weapon would have been able to dodge that attack.

Unless:

He had been imprisoned here all along.

That was right. It was she, with her own hands, who had killed him.

In that mont, Elsa's mind shattered completely.

She sank to her knees on the ground and let out a cry of anguished grief.

The blade still protruded from Cindy's chest, blood pouring out.

Elsa clutched her own hair with both hands, utterly disheveled.

Throughout the entire interrogation room, only her wretched sobbing remained, echoing on and on without end…

***

In the warm Study, sunlight stread through the window and fell across the red wool rug.

"Tell Leah, and have her notify Helnersen."

"Ask him to select a batch of Demi-humans with decent strength and send them here to the Royal Capital."

Xiangyilan stood before Viktor and gave a slight bow.

Then, her complexion faintly flushed, she slowly withdrew.

Watching Xiangyilan's small, slight figure as she left, Viktor felt a sudden flicker of puzzlent.

Why did the little Cat-girl's condition seem off?

But he didn't dwell on it. He sat down at his writing desk and looked over the 2 docunts in his hands.

These were the results of an investigation Leah had sent over.

2 information dossiers, each bearing the na of a different person.

Cindy and Elsa.

Viktor went through each one in turn and gained so understanding of the 2 of them.

Cindy and Elsa were both Adventurers.

In the Adventurer's Capital of the south, they had once belonged to the sa team.

Over the course of their ti as Adventurers, as comrades in arms, Cindy had gradually developed feelings for Elsa.

At the ti, Elsa had declined Cindy, citing her desire to grow stronger.

Having reached 4th Tier ahead of him, she was taken notice of by the Rether Family, recruited into the Family's ranks, and eventually beca Lady Cassana's personal guard.

The Rether Family recognized the bond between Cindy and Elsa, and using Elsa as leverage—along with a weapon as a bargaining chip—brought Cindy into the Family as well.

However, Cindy and Elsa were assigned to different departnts. Within the Rether Family, Cindy's primary role was the capture of Demi-humans.

Interestingly enough:

Before the mission in which he had captured Demi-humans and brought the Elf Resi back to the Family, Cindy had proposed to Elsa.

He had told her: if this mission goes smoothly, let's get married.

Having been comrades for so long, the 2 of them knew each other inside and out.

And so, this ti, Elsa had said yes.

Yet what no one could have imagined was this:

"In the end, Elsa killed Cindy with her own hands."

2 tongues of fla climbed across the docunts, reducing both dossiers to ash with ease.

"Word of this reaching the south will no doubt cause quite a stir."

Whether it was Cindy or Elsa, both were legendary Adventurers of renown throughout the south.

Their stories were the envy of countless Adventurers.

After all, being recognized by the Rether Family and invited to join was an enormous honor for Adventurers in the south.

Much like freelancers who lived day to day—never knowing where their next al was coming from—

Suddenly, soone had landed a job that would feed them for the rest of their lives.

Of course the others would be green with envy.

Consider this: if news reached the south that Elsa had killed her own fiancé Cindy with her own hands—

Elsa would probably earn herself a new title.

"【Black Widow】? Though perhaps 【Mantis Killer】 suits her better."

Weija shot Viktor a sideways glance.

"No one could be more ruthlessly scheming than you, Viktor."

He had never had any intention of letting Cindy survive.

He had done nothing more than offer that poor woman the faintest glimr of hope.

And at the very end, let her crush that hope with her own hands.

"Don't misunderstand. I simply repay every grievance in kind."

"Besides—a woman whose mind has broken is far easier to control than a woman whose heart is filled with hatred."

Viktor explained this with complete composure, paying not the slightest heed to the mockery laced through Weija's words.

As his words fell, a knock ca at the door.

"Co in."

Viktor raised his head and watched as the Succubus young lady—wrapped in her oversized robe, looking thoroughly timid—stepped inside.

She first turned around and carefully closed the door behind her.

As if steeling herself through so inner preparation, she drew one long, deep breath at the very last mont.

Then Heni lifted her head, looked at Viktor, her face flushed crimson.

As if rallying her own courage, she called out to Viktor in a loud, resolute voice:

"Professor! Please brace yourself!"

"I'm taking it off!"

Viktor: "?"
