WILOW-Ch.464: Wedding Gifts
Red Keep, King’s Landing
POV of Doric Pendragon
Later that day.
"...from House Tyrell and the people of the Reach, your grace, it is my honor to present you with this Wedding Cup. For you and my daughter Margaery. Drink deep and live long." Mace Tyrell said as he put down the extra-large goblet in front of the Royal Pair.
The cup was made of pure gold, and Doric could see the Rose of House Tyrell and the Three Dragons of House Targaryen symbols on it.
He could see that the mber of the Royal House of Stark looked fairly uncomfortable that there was no direwolf on it.
Even King Aegon and Queen Margaery didn’t seem to be impressed, and Lady Olenna looked like she wanted to face palm herself.
He himself was not really surprised that Lord Mace Tyrell would make such a blunder. After all, no one ever accused him of being smart.
Although Aegon Jon was now a Targaryen, he was raised as a Stark, and the Royal House of Stark was present at this celebration as the groom’s family.
It wouldn’t have been a problem if the cup had only featured the symbol of House Targaryen.
But by adding his own house’s symbol and omitting the Royal House of Stark’s, Mace Tyrell seed to be sending the ssage that Aegon Jon no longer had any connection to the Starks and that he should put his past behind him as a result of this marriage to the Tyrells.
Under normal circumstances, such a thoughtless gift could have created problems, even animosity, between House Stark and House Tyrell.
But even if the goblet did have Stark direwolf symbol on it, it would essentially be useless except for the purpose of decoration or selling it off if the Royal House ever needed the gold.
"I thank you, Lord Mace, for your kind gift." King Aegon said, but everyone could hear the lack of enthusiasm in his voice.
Everyone except for Lord Mace, who gave a huge smile and bowed before leaving for his own seat.
Next, it was King Eddard’s turn to give a gift, and he gave both Queen Margaery and King Aegon two very high-quality fur cloaks that would keep them warm even in the coldest of nights, and quite a unique pair of outfits.
One of these outfits was for a man and the other for a woman, and with their red-and-black Targaryen-thed colors, it was clear they were made specifically for King Aegon and Queen Margaery.
The special suit prepared for the King was predominantly black with occasional red accents. It was clear that this garnt was intended for special ceremonies, but what was striking was its design, which differed from traditional styles.
This was because King Eddard had asked Doric for help in preparing this gift, and Doric had assisted King Eddard in creating these presents.
On the other hand, the dress prepared for the Queen was predominantly red, but with occasional black motifs and embroidery.
Doric had used Asshai silk and Lannister gold-embroidered velvet fabrics for these garnts; the dress prepared for the Queen was even embroidered with Myr lace.
Doric could see that everyone at the celebration looked at the clothes with wonder as King Eddard’s n brought them out of their special boxes to display.
Especially when the Queen’s gown was displayed, all the won looked at it with envy.
Queen Margaery’s gaze also clearly showed that she loved the gift. "Thank you, King Eddard, for these beautiful gifts," said the Queen.
Then the servants gathered the gifts and carried them to the King and Queen’s chambers.
In the end, it was his turn to give gifts.
"King Aegon. Queen Margaery." Doric said as two n brought a chest and put it on the table.
He rubbed his chin and said, "I don’t think my gifts this ti will be as good as those I gave at King Aegon’s coronation. But I will repeat my behavior from the coronation and give you four gifts. This is the first of these gifts."
Then he opened the chest.
Both King Aegon’s and Queen Margaery’s eyes went wide as soon as he did.
"Ti has turned these dragon eggs into stone." He said. And that was true.
These were the dead eggs that he had by the hundreds in his vault. He would be a fool to give live eggs to anyone else.
Dragon eggs, to protect themselves against the passage of ti, would eventually turn to stone, allowing them to retain their vitality for a long ti.
However, eggs that remained as stone for too long would eventually consu all their vitality and turn completely into stone.
Doric was certain that the eggs he gave to King Aegon were completely dead and turned into stone. Otherwise, it would have been foolish to give a Targaryen dragon eggs that he could hatch.
"But they’ll remain as beautiful as ever. So that you may accept your true heritage." Doric said.
King Aegon nodded and said, "Thank you, Your Majesty. They are very beautiful." Margaery nodded in agreent.
Then Doric closed the trunk and put it away.
The next gift was a large flowerpot covered with a cloth. He removed the cloth, and everyone was once again amazed at the gift.
"Bonsai Heart Tree." He said, "Created with the magic of the Children of the Forest. I’ve put so of these in my room in Titanic so that the Old Gods will remain with no matter where I go. I’ve already sent a dozen of these trees to your solar. You can later rearrange them as you see fit. This is a gift I give to you so that you may never forget your roots and find solace in them when the tis get tough."
King Aegon looked genuinely touched by his gifts and nodded at him.
He let the servants take the Bonsai tree away and stepped back a few steps. "Next gift is once again, for the stability of this kingdom. My n have convinced Queen Shylesse Baratheon and Princess Shireen Baratheon to give up their titles and bend the knee to you as the rightful King of the Iron Throne if you allow Princess Shireen to retain Storm’s End and her position as the Lord Paramount of the Stormlands. They’re already on their way and should arrive here in a week."
Doric’s words were enough to shock everyone present.
Yes, they were celebrating. But everyone knew that, despite everything, the war wasn’t over, and after these celebrations ended, they would have to take up their swords again and go to war or send their loved ones.
Or at least, that’s what they thought.
But Doric Pendragon, who had perford many miracles one after another without anyone knowing, had accomplished another miracle, ending the war without anyone realizing it.
"With this, war has essentially been ended." He said with a smile and then added. "And as my final gift..."
At Doric’s request, the n brought two exquisitely carved and polished wooden boxes.
Doric opened the boxes, and inside, on cushions, lay a crown and a tiara.
"As an emperor, I felt it necessary to give the King and Queen who will rule this kingdom in my na sothing that represents my authority, and the crown and tiara seed like a fitting gift."
As the crowd gazed at the crown and tiara, more magnificent than anything they had ever seen before, Doric concluded his speech with a final sentence.
"I wish you good for the upcoming years of ruling, King Aegon."
