Capítulo 1423: Chapter 681: Just Cause for War! (Part 2)
The other powerful elites also echoed, so saying the governnt should reduce taxes, so saying they should get priority in border oil drilling rights, and so wanting their sons to enter the state parliant. Each of their conditions seed like they were carving pieces from Paul, yet none were willing to send troops to support the front line first.
Paul was so angry his fingers shook. He pointed at this group of elites, unable to utter a word for a long ti. These people usually rely on Texas’s resources to beco wealthy, each one loaded with money. But at critical monts, they only care about their own interests, lacking even the slightest national sentint.
“Fine, very fine!”
Paul finally squeezed out a sentence, “All of you are thinking of your own benefits, yet you’ve forgotten who is safeguarding you! If the people from Louisiana co, your ranches, your refineries, your money, they’ll all be snatched away! At that point, what use will your conditions be?”
But no one listened to him.
Everyone was very dismissive.
If they take it, let them take it, at worst we’ll be dogs for Illinois.
The patriarch of the Rockhart family stood up, straightened his suit: “Mr. President, it’s not that we don’t love our country, but we must consider our family’s future. If you can et our conditions, we’ll send troops imdiately, if not, we have no choice but to protect our industries first.”
The other powerful elites also stood up, finding excuses to leave, so saying they need to go back and discuss with family mbers, others saying they will pacify the workers. Soon, only Paul was left alone in the study.
Paul slumped in his chair, feeling all his strength had been drained.
Looking at the empty study, he was both angry and anxious, yet had no solutions.
These powerful elites controlled Texas’s economy and ard forces. Without their support, his presidency was just an empty title, impossible to resist Louisiana’s attack.
“Damn it! A bunch of money-hungry bastards!”
Paul kicked the table hard, the coffee cup on the table shattered on the floor, fragnts and coffee liquid splattering everywhere.
At this mont, the door to the study was pushed open, Lawrence Constantine Stuart walked in. He saw the ss on the floor and then looked at Paul’s gloomy face, already knowing the eting didn’t go well.
“Brother, they’re still unwilling to send troops?” Lawrence squatted down, cleaning up the fragnts on the floor, and asked softly.
Paul nodded, his voice hoarse: “Unwilling, each like a vampire, only knowing how to propose conditions, completely ignoring the front line’s survival. If this continues, we won’t need Louisiana to attack; we’ll collapse first.”
Lawrence sighed, threw the fragnts into the trash can, then sat in the chair opposite Paul: “Brother, I told you long ago these elites are unreliable. They only recognize benefits, not the president. Now we can’t rely on them and must think of other ways.”
“Other ways? What ways are there?”
Lawrence was silent for a few seconds, then raised his head, eyes carrying a trace of worry: “Brother, there’s sothing I must tell you, the Departnt of Defense just sent a ssage that xico’s Eastern Theater troops are acting strangely lately.”
Paul was stunned: “xico? What’s up with them?”
“They’ve assembled large forces at the border, including many armored vehicles and artillery. Even missile units have been mobilized, reportedly.”
Paul’s expression instantly changed. He had been focusing on Louisiana, completely neglecting xico’s issues. Now it dawned on him that xico had always eyed Southern United States land covetously. If they seize the opportunity, with enemies in both directions, Texas would truly be finished.
“Damn it! Those xican bastards!”
Paul banged the table hard, causing the just-cleaned fragnts to fall everywhere again, “They also want to take advantage during chaos? Do they truly think Texas is easy prey?”
Lawrence shook his head: “Brother, now’s not the ti to be angry. We must quickly find a way to handle this, facing Louisiana and guarding against xico. If they really make a move, we can’t withstand it.”
“Then tell , what should we do now?” Paul opened his eyes, a trace of helplessness in his gaze.
Lawrence frowned, thought for a long ti before speaking: “We can only first stabilize xico, trying not to give them a reason to act. I suggest you send a delegation to xico, talk to Victor, even if it ans making so concessions, we must keep them at bay. anwhile, try talking to those elites again; if nothing else works, agree to so of their conditions, first get them to send troops and push back the people from Louisiana.”
Paul was silent.
He knew what Lawrence suggested was the only option right now, but agreeing to the elites’ conditions ant handing over Texas’s interests; concessions to xico felt suffocating.
But now, he had no other choice.
“Victor is just an ungrateful dog spawn!”
Paul felt sowhat aggrieved saying this. From the beginning, we worked together on The Pentagon, sweet-talking each other like intimates. Back then, you even called your dear, now you call Mrs. Niu.
Damn it!
Reality is brutal.
“Alright, let’s do as you say.”
Paul gritted his teeth, “Arrange the delegation, find soone eloquent, as for those elites, I’ll talk to them again, even if it ans sacrificing, we must get them to send troops!”
Lawrence nodded: “Brother, don’t worry, I’ll arrange it quickly. However…now isn’t the right ti for a war with Illinois.”
