He restrained his temper and explained, “George, without parliantary authorization, I can’t order any military action beyond a blockade. Moreover, that bastard Patrick is already brewing a motion of no confidence against , possibly even impeachnt proceedings. I can barely protect myself now.”
He paused, his tone filled with fatigue: “The problem in Canada is very serious, George. It’s not just a question of deploying troops or not; it’s a potential constitutional crisis. Patrick has seized on the public’s complex views about the United States, and he’s now presenting himself as a defender of national independence.”
Little Bush remained silent on the other end of the phone for a long ti, with only the sound of his heavy breathing audible.
Finally, he said stiffly, “Alright, I understand. Handle your internal troubles first. But ti waits for no one. We hope Canada can soon make a decision that aligns with our mutual interests.”
After hanging up the phone, Little Bush sank deeply into the president’s office chair, his face dark with gloom.
“Son of a bitch…” he cursed under his breath, unsure if he was cursing Patrick or the sudden turn of events.
He wasn’t a fool.
Patrick, a politician known for his tough stance and belligerence, suddenly made a 180-degree turn at a critical mont, even launching a political nuclear attack against the current Pri Minister. Sothing was definitely off behind this.
Was it rely party struggle or a shift in ideology? It couldn’t have been this drastic or thorough.
“Who persuaded him?” Little Bush muttered to himself. Who had the power and motive, at this juncture, to convince Canada’s opposition leader to turncoat, risking national chaos to prevent Canada’s participation in the war?
The answer was almost obvious.
Who benefited from this? Undoubtedly, it was most beneficial to Victor of xico. A Canada unable to deploy troops would be akin to removing an arm from the United States on the northern side.
The pressure on the xican Fleet would drastically reduce, allowing them to focus more on dealing with the U.S. military from the south.
“Victor…” Little Bush squinted his eyes.
Just as he was imrsed in the frustration of being isolated and sched against, the office door was suddenly slamd open with a bang, without even a preemptive knock.
Little Bush looked up angrily to see his Chief of Staff, Carl Rove, practically stumbling in, breathing heavily, with a sheen of cold sweat on his forehead.
“Carl?!” Little Bush was so shocked by his appearance that he stood up, not even caring as ashes fell onto the expensive carpet. “What’s happened? Is it Maine Bay? Or the fleet…”
Rove rushed to his desk, slamming his hands heavily on the mahogany surface, barely supporting his almost limp body. He opened his mouth and gasped for breath.
“Speak! What’s going on?!”
Rove took a sharp breath:
“Illinois, Bramo! That son of a bitch Bramo sent troops!”
“Half an hour ago, he crossed the state line and launched a surprise attack on Indiana. Their vanguard, at least two armored battalions, has broken through the National Guard’s first line of defense at the state border, advancing rapidly towards Gree City and Hammond! God, they even shelled residential areas on the outskirts of Chicago!”
