In the backyard of the police station, four armored vehicles in good condition were parked.
"These will be our rides. Please hop in, we’ll lead the way."
The police force rode in the first car, while Felix’s gang rode in the second. As for Leon’s group, they took the remaining two vehicles at the rear.
A minute later, the four vehicles drove out of the camp and took to the street on the left. After about a hundred ters, they began to notice sothing unusual. There were no zombies around.
Usually, there would be a few zombies seen walking around aimlessly, but there was none.
Although the police and Felix’s gang were used to this, it surprised Leon and the others.
After driving another hundred ters, the first vehicle parked at the side of the deserted road. Captain Jester and his team got down from it, followed by the others who also got down from their vehicles.
"Are we close by?" Reymond asked as he looked around.
"Hm, it’s just at that corner on our left." Lauren answered him, holding the sheath of his sword tightly.
Stepping beside Reymond, Selene looked around, her eyes narrowing. "This place seems very deserted. I would expect survivors to be in the buildings around us."
Captain Jester smiled and answered her. "Of course, but we already saved everyone that we could find in three-hundred-ters radius around us."
"Oh? Not bad." She gave a rare complint.
The man chuckled, then stepped forward. "Let’s get moving. The warehouse is up ahead."
"Wait," Leon said suddenly, causing the man to pause.
"Hm? What is it?" The man looked back and asked.
"We have a condition you have to accept if you really want our help."
Leon folded his arms, remaining on the spot. The other students also lost their smiles, staring at Captain Jester with serious expressions.
Lieutenant Zhong, who hadn’t said anything since eting them, frowned and asked. "Shouldn’t you have spoken about this before we arrived here?"
Turning to her, Leon said in mock remorse. "My bad, I forgot."
Captain Jester frowned faintly, but didn’t want conflict at this point. So, he said, "It’s alright. I understand. What is your condition, young man?"
He didn’t refer to Leon by his na, withdrawing his full respect and leaving only perfunctory politeness. After all, he could tell that Leon was doing this intentionally so he wouldn’t be able to refuse.
Leon smiled, unbothered by the man’s formal tone. "Well, since we’d be moving out of your camp soon, we’d like to have 30% of the ammunition we get from the warehouse. Not much, right? I know you’re surprised, but we’re also courteous people."
A stunned silence fell over them, and the police officers looked at each other in surprise. Was this guy serious?
Captain Jester’s face twitched, and he felt like biting Leon. ’30 percent and you’re courteous? Courteous my foot!’
Before he could speak up, Lauren protested. "Hey, Leon. Isn’t that too much? You’re asking for a whole 30%. That’s not small at all."
Glancing at him, Leon sighed. "This... it’s actually not my fault."
Captain Jester imdiately glared at him. What nonsense was he going to say now? That it was his own fault?
As if knowing his thoughts, Leon said in a lanting tone. "We’re a team of nine strong evolvers, and Captain Jester wants to hire us all. Naturally, our paynt must be worth it, right?"
Lauren’s expression fell when he realized he couldn’t refute him. "But... we’re also helping you guys by letting your people have accommodation with us, right?"
Selene’s gaze snapped to him, a mocking glint in her eyes. "Helping us? Aren’t you guys governnt agents? Isn’t it your duty to protect the citizens?"
With their identity being used against them, Lauren could no longer say anything. Lieutenant Zhong snorted and glared at Leon, but she didn’t say a word.
With the decision ultimately falling to him, Captain Jester rubbed his eyelids in frustration.
"Sigh, I understand your plight, young man. But I’m afraid all I can offer you is 25%."
Leon’s head dropped slightly, and he seed to contemplate for a mont. Fearing that he might refuse, the man quickly added.
"Young Miss Gwen can also have the special quiver for herself. That is enough compensation, right?"
Leon glanced at Gwen, then nodded reluctantly. "Alright. I guess we can work with that."
All the while, Felix remained silent, resting on his vehicle with his arms folded. He observed the exchange between the two n, completely amused.
’This Leon guy looks unremarkable, but he has a sharp mind and good acting skills. Hm, I wonder how strong he is.’
Then, his gaze shifted to the girl at the back, who was wearing a nose mask. ’Where do I know her from...?’
He didn’t know for now, but he would surely find out later.
"Since that’s settled, let’s get going."
Captain Jester turned around and led the way hurriedly, not wanting to hear anything similar to another negotiation again.
Leon smiled and followed behind him, inwardly jubilant about the successful deal. With enough ammunition, he wouldn’t have to worry about dealing with weaker zombies by himself.
The nineteen humans walked together and turned to a corner where a large, barricaded building stood. Just from its looks alone, one could tell that it belonged to the governnt. The police insignia hung on it also signified who owned the property.
Looking at the corpses in police uniforms by the gate, Leon could tell that they had beco zombies before being killed by bullets.
’The world is ending.’ He thought to himself, chuckling darkly.
"Here we are. The danger lies beyond these gates." Captain Jester said as he stood before the gates, looking inside the desolate compound of the building.
Leon’s eyes narrowed, and he grabbed his greatsword, unsheathing it. The blade struck the asphalt with enough force to crack it.
Selene also readied herself, her fingers twitching as she got ready to summon ice spikes.
As they stepped into the compound, Captain Jester spoke in an odd tone. "Get ready..."
