The base approach was the sa stone path it had been yesterday, worn smooth by three hundred years of passage, the mountain’s pulse running through it at the sa steady rhythm it ran through everything in proximity to the Ninefold Heaven Gate Mountain.
What was different was the people on it.
Zhao Tianhe walked at a asured distance behind Lin Yi, his casual robes the sa as they had been at every encounter, the Ascendant’s presence carried in the specific way of soone who had stopped needing to announce it a very long ti ago. Zhao Yuexin was beside him. Behind them, a procession of Zhao Family mbers that had assembled from the estate’s morning population, so of them senior disciples who had been at the courtyard engagent, so of them elders whose faces Lin Yi had not seen before, all of them moving with the quiet attention of people who had co to witness sothing rather than participate in it.
The Threshold Sentinels’ positions on the base approach were empty. Both had been defeated the previous day and had not regenerated, which told him sothing about the mountain’s operational logic. The Sentinels were not standard monsters that respawned on a cycle. They were gatekeepers that reset only when the candidate they had assessed had either passed or withdrawn. Since Lin Yi had defeated both and reached level 250 without subsequently attempting the First Gate, they remained absent.
The First Gate itself was visible from the base approach’s midpoint, which he reached and stopped at.
He looked at it from there.
The gate was not decorative. Nothing about its construction suggested that aesthetics had been a consideration. It was a threshold, purely functional, built from the sa stone as the mountain’s base but carrying the mountain’s pulse at full intensity rather than the diminished version that existed in the surrounding terrain. The pulse at the gate was not background. It was foreground, present in the air as well as the ground, pressing against the cultivation base of anything that ca within thirty ters of it.
Lin Yi felt it from the midpoint.
Level 250 or above. That was the qualification. The gate’s pressure was not an attack. It was a read. The pressure extended outward and assessed the level of whatever it encountered and made a determination. Below 250, the determination was rejection. At 250, it was sothing else.
He stood at the midpoint and let the pressure read him.
Zhao Yuexin stopped beside him. She looked at the gate for a mont and then at him with the expression she had been developing across eleven days of escort, the one that was neither the cold assessnt of their first encounter nor anything with an easy na.
"The pressure reaches here," she said.
"Yes," Lin Yi said.
"At level 247 it is manageable but not comfortable," she said. "At 246 and below it becos progressively more discouraging. The mountain is designed to prevent people from reaching the gate physically if they do not qualify, not just to reject them when they arrive."
Lin Yi looked at her. "You’ve tested it."
"After my cousin," she said. The sa flatness in her voice as when she had ntioned him the first ti. Information rather than grief, the grief having been processed into sothing more useful at so earlier point and left there.
He looked back at the gate.
Behind them, the gathered Zhao Family mbers had stopped at a respectful distance, the procession settling into an arc of observation that maintained its distance from the gate’s pressure field. Zhao Tianhe was at the arc’s nearest point, his position closer to the gate than any of the others, the Ascendant’s cultivation level apparently sufficient to stand in the pressure field without it being discouraging.
Lei Bao had not erged from the blade since they left the estate. He was present, the crackling warmth of the active Thunder Spirit detectable through the hilt, but contained. Waiting.
Lin Yi looked at the gate from the midpoint and thought about what he knew of it.
Level 250 minimum. Three hundred years of no successful passage. Zhao Yuexin at 247 had entered and returned with injuries that required three weeks of recovery. Her cousin at 247 had entered and not returned. The deep zone’s fifth entity had produced the Path Judgnt notation, the mountain’s assessnt through the system’s output format confirming that the path was honest and directing him to continue.
He was thinking about what the gate would test when Zhao Tianhe spoke from behind him.
"It is not like the deep zone," the elder said.
Lin Yi turned.
Zhao Tianhe was looking at the gate with the expression of an Ascendant looking at sothing that had once been relevant to him and was now a different category of thing. "The deep zone tests the person," he said. "The gate tests the cultivation. Those are different objects."
"How so?" Lin Yi said.
"The deep zone looks at what you are built on and whether it is real," Zhao Tianhe said. "The gate looks at what you have built and whether it is complete. A person can have a real foundation and an incomplete structure. The gate finds the incomplete parts and amplifies them until they either break or hold."
Lin Yi looked at the gate again with this in mind.
What he had built. Sixty-seven acquired skills. Four Cataclysmic passive integrations. Two years of cultivation under a 10,000x amplification system. The Abyssal Thunder Surge Blade with Lei Bao active. Half Aethel-Sun constitution. The Emperor’s inheritance in the pouch on his wrist.
The incomplete parts.
He thought about that honestly. Incomplete was not the sa as insufficient. The gate was not asking whether he was finished. Nothing about what he was carrying suggested he was or should be finished. The tenth note’s request alone would take years. The true blade’s mastery would take more than years. The scattered fragnts of the Emperor’s inheritance across the realms were an indefinite project. He was not finished and he was not supposed to be finished.
The question was whether what he had built was complete enough to hold under amplification.
He stood at the midpoint and ran through the frawork the way he ran through combat assessnts before engaging sothing new. Not looking for confidence. Looking for honest evaluation.
The foundation had been confird honest by the fifth entity. That was not the sa as confird complete but it was the correct starting point. A real foundation was the minimum requirent for everything built on top of it to be assessable at all.
The frawork above the foundation was sixty-seven skills integrated across two years of cultivation at an amplification rate that had no precedent in the recorded history of his world. The skills were genuine, each one absorbed through cores that had been selected and deployed and used in real engagents rather than held in reserve. He had not just acquired them. He had fought with them.
The constitution had been changed by the Emperor’s blood, the half Aethel-Sun integration producing a physiology that was genuinely different from its starting point. The change was real. He had not just taken the blood. He had used the solar constitution in engagents since, the secondary solar core active in the deep zone’s encounters in ways he had not always tracked consciously but that had been present.
The inheritance he was carrying, the ten items, the tenth note, the true blade, the scattered fragnts he had not yet located. He was carrying these without being ready to fully act on them, and he had been honest about that in the deep zone and the mountain had confird the honesty.
The incomplete parts were real. The true blade’s mastery was incomplete. The Middle Domain was unknown territory he had no experience of. The tenth note’s request was a direction without a complete map. His understanding of what an Ascendant was ca from Xu Ling’s explanation and the Emperor’s mory Pearl’s sealed layers rather than from personal experience.
Those were the incomplete parts. He held them clearly and without softening them.
The gate’s pressure at the midpoint of the approach was present and specific. He had been feeling it since they stopped here, the mountain’s read operating continuously, the assessnt function working on the sa principle the deep zone had worked on but from a different angle.
Zhao Yuexin was still beside him. She had been watching him while he thought, the quiet observation she had been doing since the first morning escort, the attention that was not patience in the passive sense but genuine engagent in what she was looking at.
"You have been standing here for several minutes," she said.
"I know," Lin Yi said.
"You are not ready to go up yet," she said. It was not a question or a judgnt. An observation.
"I am going up tomorrow," he said.
She looked at him.
"Not because I am not ready," he said. "Because I want one more night with what I know before the gate tells what I do not know. The two things are different."
She held his gaze for a mont. Then she looked at the gate and then back at him and said nothing further, the silence carrying the quality of soone who had understood the distinction he was drawing and had decided it was a real one.
Behind them, the gathered Zhao Family mbers waited in their arc of observation, the morning light moving through its arc above the mountain’s nine-tiered profile, the pulse in the stone path steady and old and entirely indifferent to the tiline of anyone standing on it.
Zhao Tianhe had not moved from his position at the arc’s nearest point. He was looking at the gate with the Ascendant’s perspective, the eyes of soone for whom the gate was a thing already passed rather than a thing to be passed, and whatever he saw from that perspective he kept to himself.
Lin Yi looked at the First Gate one more ti.
Tomorrow morning, he thought.
He turned and walked back toward the estate.
