Night fell.

Jiaxing Garden fell silent.

A warm, faintly fragrant wind swirled fallen flowers and leaves around, scattering them across the empty courtyard.

Red lanterns, specially hung to welco the Mid-Autumn Festival, dangled from the eaves of the two wooden buildings.

Their reddish glow bathed the wooden buildings in a hazy light, outlining their silhouettes.

It was now close to eleven o’clock.

The croaking of frogs was loud and clear, echoing throughout the garden.

But Xiao Wan’er, in her room upstairs, seed not to hear it at all, still bent over her desk writing.

Two oil lamps illuminated the Phoebe Wood desk.

To her left were two stacks of account books.

To her right was a Geomancy Map of Shu State Prefecture City.

Writing in fits and starts, she would occasionally flip through an account book or find a specific location on the Geomancy Map and jot it down.

Her elegant, small characters filled line after line.

Her sentences were a mix of long and short, yet they flowed coherently.

She wrote things like, ’The academy needs a quiet location; North City would be best.’ ’The dical Dao emphasizes practical skill, so teaching and testing must go hand in hand.’ ’We can’t be extravagant with the silver coins; this must be a gradual endeavor.’ And so on.

So were Chen Yi’s exact words of advice, while others were her own thoughts, inspired by him and combined with her own understanding.

Before long, Xiao Wan’er had filled three pages of Yunsong Paper.

Yet she felt no fatigue. On the contrary, a hint of joy graced her features.

She was completely absorbed, and enjoying every mont of it.

Her maids, Cui’er and Juan’er, exchanged a look and, with a silent understanding, tiptoed out of the room.

One went to cook white fungus soup, and the other went to heat water for the bath.

It was all out of concern for Xiao Wan’er.

By the ti they had both finished their tasks, the watchman’s rattle could be heard outside Jiaxing Garden—the second watch was more than halfway through.

Cui’er, holding the white fungus soup, knocked on the door. "Miss, you should take a break."

Xiao Wan’er lifted her head from the fluffy collar of her cloak, her expression still distant.

Her stunningly beautiful face held a trace of innocent charm.

Clearly, she was still pondering matters of the dical Dao Academy.

When she saw the bowl of white fungus soup, Xiao Wan’er ca back to her senses. She put down her fine-tipped wolf-hair brush and asked, "What watch is it?"

"It’s almost the third watch."

"Oh, is it that late already?"

Juan’er, holding Xiao Wan’er’s nightgown, said with a smile, "You were too focused, Miss."

"If it weren’t so late, and if you didn’t have to deliver festival gifts to the masters and madams of the various houses tomorrow morning, Cui’er and I wouldn’t have dared to disturb you."

Hearing this, Xiao Wan’er glanced at the several filled pages of Yunsong Paper on her desk. She hesitated for a mont before carefully putting them away and nodding. "You’re right, I should rest. I’ll continue tomorrow night."

These past few days, her schedule had been packed.

She had little free ti from morning till night, and could only think and write a little after the guests in Jiaxing Garden had left and she was back in her room.

After all, she had already received the Old Master’s approval and had asked Chen Yi for so much advice. If she didn’t put her heart into it or ended up failing, she would feel terrible.

Cui’er couldn’t help but complain, "Those people are unbelievable. They clearly want their young masters and ladies to beco the Second Young Master-in-law’s disciples, but instead of approaching him, they keep pestering you to diate."

Juan’er nodded in agreent. "They see that you’re kind-hearted, Miss, so they all want to try and wear you down. I bet most of them are thinking that if by so chance it works out, they’ll have hit the jackpot."

Xiao Wan’er smiled faintly. "It’s not that complicated. Most of them are female relatives; it would be improper for them to approach my brother-in-law directly."

"But you’ve already politely refused them, and they still won’t leave."

"They are guests, after all. And besides..."

Xiao Wan’er paused, her gaze shifting toward Spring Lotus Garden as she said with a smile:

"Besides, my brother-in-law also had visitors today—two distinguished gentlen from the Governor’s Office. Business cos first."

Cui’er and Juan’er opened their mouths, wanting to say that the Second Young Master-in-law and his guest weren’t discussing any real business; they had spent the whole afternoon talking about whether there would be courtesans at the Mid-Autumn poetry gathering.

But seeing the look on Xiao Wan’er’s face, they swallowed their words.

Xiao Wan’er, however, didn’t think much of it. After she spoke, she took a few sips of the white fungus soup, feeling a little warr. Then she bathed, changed into a pink, light silk nightgown, and lay down on her bed.

Before falling asleep, she didn’t forget to give an instruction: "After we deliver the festival gifts tomorrow, remind to make a trip to Spring Lotus Garden."

"I have a few more questions to ask my brother-in-law."

Cui’er and Juan’er naturally agreed. Seeing her close her eyes, they tidied up the desk and tiptoed out of the room.

Not far from the door, Shen Huatang heard the movent. She glanced back once before resuming her post outside the wooden building.

Faintly, she could hear snippets of their muttering.

"Clearly, the Young Master-in-law and his friend were discussing courtesans."

"It wasn’t the Second Young Master-in-law, it was his companion—this year’s Imperial Top Scholar. He was the one reciting so lewd poem about ’listening to the spring rain in a small tower overnight’."

"Exactly. But the Second Miss already led a raid on Spring Rain Building, so they can’t go anyway."

"But that won’t stop those vixens from going to the academy’s poetry gathering..."

Hearing this, Shen Huatang knew they were talking about Chen Yi. She couldn’t help but glance toward Spring Lotus Garden as well.

She listened intently for a mont but could only hear the faint sound of the wind, so she paid it no more mind.

’If possible, I would much rather the Second Young Master-in-law be passionate about chasing won than... ’

Chen Yi, for his part, was completely unaware of all this.

He was secretly hiding in the Purple Bamboo Forest, cultivating his Martial Arts.

Ever since Xie Tingyun returned to Tian Mountain to sweet-talk his junior martial brothers and sisters into coming down the mountain to serve as Guards for Hundred Herbs Hall, Chen Yi could finally practice his Techniques in peace.

Two days.

Two nights, to be precise.

Though it was a short ti, he had already cultivated both his Mountain Shattering Fist and Hundred Flowers Palm to the peak of Mastery.

His two Body Techniques had long since reached a point where they could not be improved any further.

Only his Dragon-Falling Spear Technique and Brocade Spring Saber Technique were still lacking.

Especially the Dragon-Falling Spear Technique.

Not only had he not fully integrated the Great Success Spear Dao Profound Mysteries, but the four new spear moves that appeared after it ascended to the Celestial Tier were only at the Skilled Level. It would still be so ti before he reached Mastery.

That said...

The Celestial Tier Dragon-Falling Spear Technique was indeed much stronger than the Earth Tier version.

Especially when combined with the ntal Realm of the Great Success Spear Dao, the power of the Spear Technique increased imnsely.
