The Gu family had been quite prominent since the Kangxi period of the Qing Dynasty. The wife of the then Gu was a princess from the royal Manchu court, known for her love of garden architecture. Old Master Gu indulged his wife and built gardens that rivalled the Sumr Palace.

No doubt, Gu Shaocheng impressed Elder Master Gu. The seventeen-year-old outwitted him with his cunning and ruthlessness. When his injured uncles and aunts finally recognized him as a threat, he had already seized control of the Gu fortunes, changing the status quo and firmly holding everything in his palms.

Bai Wuqing was soone he first t by chance in the Yale University campus, whose poise and steadiness he could never match. This deadly attraction compelled him to swear brotherhood with Bai Wuqing. One can say that his success today is largely due to their journey together, one an intellectual and the other a warrior, perfectly complinting each other. Many of their opponents fell prey to their combined intellect.
Nan Baihao was the only child of a major arms dealer in South Arica. When his parents died and his uncles revealed their hidden ambitions, Gu Shaocheng saved Nan Baihao from a car explosion and since then, he has followed Gu Shaocheng. Nan Baihao was his most accomplished vanguard force.
Yan Fengchi was special, being a bona fide governnt-trained special forces soldier. It took a lot of effort from Gu Shaocheng to establish a close relationship with him. If not for an accident in which Gu Shaocheng saved his life, Yan Fengchi would still be an active officer in the Vancouver military, living mostly in the military zone. Gu Shaocheng simply provided him with a residence in his villa complex where Yan Fengchi could stay during his vacation.
