Gu Shaocheng stared at the ceiling, his face wearing a composed and calm expression, as if nothing could faze him.
He picked up the remote control again and switched through two more channels!
Even though the atmosphere outside had escalated to the point where a confrontation seed imminent.
Nan Baihao was about to step outside when the phone in the pocket of the man at the door holding the credentials suddenly rang. Just as he was about to give the order to break in, his action stopped abruptly. He answered the call: "Yes... Yes... Understood..."
After hanging up, he suddenly dropped his previously businesslike deanor, glanced at the overbearing and arrogant The Great Lai beside him, and pulled him aside to speak in a low voice: "I just received a call from higher-ups. They said the evidence is insufficient. The arrest warrant we just issued has been revoked, and we’ve been ordered to return to the station imdiately."
The Great Lai’s face darkened instantly: "What do you an?"
"Brother, this is as far as I can help. I’m afraid today’s a wasted trip. Let’s pull back!"
"Hey! What are you trying to say? Insufficient evidence? I’ve been collecting evidence for three months—so thorough—how could it be insufficient? Are you ssing with ?!" The Great Lai flung his hand in frustration.
"The order ca directly from above. They said the evidence was insufficient and told us not to disturb the people unnecessarily. What can I do? Let’s go. If we stay any longer, we’ll just embarrass ourselves. We’ll think of another way back at the station!"
"Goddammit!" The Great Lai spit angrily. "Just leaving like this—I’m so fucking unsatisfied!"
In the house, Gu Shaocheng was grinning ear to ear as he answered a phone call, joking about how he was a bit startled. Speaking slowly and leisurely, he told the other party on the phone that he’d just learned he was going to have twins—both boys—but they were still in the womb, and it would be another four months before he could invite the caller to the full moon celebration. Before hanging up, he humbly and cheerfully lanted how the earlier scare had nearly upset his pregnant wife, which would’ve worried him to death. Fortunately, the other party was understanding, allowing him to stay by his wife’s side for a smooth pregnancy.
After ending the call, he happened to hear the sound of many footsteps retreating outside the door. Gu Shaocheng gestured: "Do we have any candies in the house?"
Leng Tong, puzzled, replied, "I think we do."
With a bright smile, he said, "Take them out and give them away. Tell them it’s a gift from , Gu Shaocheng. Thank them for their hard work. Fire off so confetti cannons too—let’s celebrate!"
And so, in the end, the intense standoff outside turned into this bizarre scene.
A group of bodyguards handing out candy to the heavily ard and now-retreating governnt soldiers. "Haha, just a misunderstanding! Here, have so candy."
Governnt soldiers: "..."
One by one, the bodyguards laughed cheerfully and said, "Our boss just found out today that our young madam is six months pregnant with twin boys. He got a little excited and wanted to share his joy. Take so candy, brothers—don’t hold back! Eat as much as you like. No need to save it for the boss."
The faces of the governnt soldiers were mixed with various expressions: "Congratulations."
"Haha, thank you, thank you. Here, you there—have so too! It’s a long trip for you guys. These candies will sweeten your journey back."
The Great Lai was dragged into the car by others. Before the car door closed, soone stuffed a handful of candy into his hand. Sitting in the car, he stared at the candies, and it took him half a minute to stop himself from crushing them on the spot. Then, he saw colorful confetti strears shooting into the sky outside the window, followed imdiately by the deafening boom of confetti cannons going off.
The Great Lai: "Goddammit!"
His companion sitting beside him looked equally embarrassed. "Drive. Let’s just go."
