She wants to prove her worth to him, striving to win his approval and...praise.

Hence, she started studying hard, climbing from 25th in the class to second. She didn’t do it for anything else, but to prove her intellect and to gain her father’s praise.
What kind of psychology was that?
Perhaps, the desperate need for validation!
She was relatively happy in Liberia. Despite the laborious work, people needed her there, and she felt that she was not a waste, but soone needed by others!
She was a bit tempted and wanted to agree to stay with him, but she also wanted to prove her abilities to him. She wanted to show him that she had the ability to earn 200,000 in one month and that she was not as incapable as he said.
So, she wanted to wait until the bet was over, then tell him, she agreed to stay by his side.
But Gu Shaocheng didn’t know. This mont had him so defeated he felt like vomiting blood. He took a deep breath and suddenly laughed, his laughter filled with undisguised sarcasm and self-depreciation: "What about admitting your feelings for ? Is that hard too?"
Chenxing was startled by his tone and increasingly chaotic bleak eyes.
Was he upset?
She thought earlier that tonight was a happy day, and she didn’t want to spoil it.
Soon enough, she lowered her head, her face alternating between embarrassnt and sha. She slightly distanced herself from him, her swollen little mouth made a mosquito-like sound in the tense atmosphere, "I think I... kind of like..."
Before she could finish, Gu Shaocheng snapped at her, clearly very agitated: "Shut up!"
He didn’t want to hear anything that could provoke him.
Chenxing looked up in astonishnt.
Gu Shaocheng’s expression was extrely cold. He had already stood up, accidentally hitting the top of the tent. He didn’t care whether it hurt or not. He grabbed his coat, quickly put on his shoes. He looked like he was fleeing the scene.
Chenxing sat there stupidly, looking incredulously at the sudden shift in Gu Shaocheng’s emotions.
Her heart felt sour, although sweet, it was indescribable.
What happened to him?
Was he angry because she was about to admit her feelings for him?
Didn’t he want her to admit it?
"Gu Shaocheng..." Chenxing suppressed the sudden surge of bitterness in her heart and softly called out to him.
Gu Shaocheng was completely flustered. Looking at the surroundings, he felt the irony of the situation. Even though he had shown her his genuine feelings, she refused to stay by his side.
She was probably going to say that she didn’t like him again. He suddenly didn’t want to hear it, fearing it. It seed as if everything around him was mocking him, that he couldn’t even earn a girl’s sincere affection!
A complete failure.
"Gu Shaocheng?"
Still unresponsive, Gu Shaocheng looked at the candle at his feet, suddenly squatting down and kicked it away.
Suddenly, a pair of hands wrapped around his waist from behind. Chenxing felt a wave of emotions rising and falling within her, but she still held him tightly, pressing her head against his back: "Gu Shaocheng, what happened? Do you hate for liking you?"
"Yes! I hate..." Wait: "What...what did you say just now?"
