###Chapter 48: He Won’t Want the Child

She answered the call, her voice tinged with confusion. "Why so early?"

"I just got out of surgery. I’m taking a mont to talk to you." Adrian Pemberton’s tone was serious.

Hearing this, Nina Wainwright’s expression turned serious as well. "Go ahead."

"I asked for you. The doctor said you should be hospitalized to protect the pregnancy. Otherwise, you could easily miscarry, and it would be difficult to conceive again. I was thinking about it last night, and I feel it would be best for you to stay at a smaller hospital for a while. That way, Zachary won’t find out," Adrian said in a grim tone.

Nina hadn’t expected him to go to so much trouble for her.

A wave of gratitude washed over her, and she said, "Thank you. I’ll talk to Zachary about it first."

"Okay. Call when you have a decision. I’ve asked a friend for help. If you’re hospitalized, I can guarantee no one will find out." Adrian paused, then continued, "If he finds out, will he definitely force you to have an abortion?"

"Isn’t it obvious? We have a secret marriage. It’s not hard to guess his motives," Nina said self-deprecatingly.

Adrian took a deep breath. "I understand. You handle things on your end. I won’t bother you for a while."

"Thank you," Nina said, her voice filled with gratitude.

After hanging up, she got up and went straight to the hospital.

She arrived at Zachary Hawthorne’s hospital room.

Seeing Luna Sterling, Caleb Ford, and the short-haired woman in the room, she still felt a sense of calm.

"Didn’t you say you didn’t want to take care of Zach? If you don’t want to, what are you doing here at the hospital?!" Caleb Ford imdiately accused her.

Nina gave him an indifferent glance before looking at Zachary. "I had a check-up yesterday. I’m not feeling well, so I need to recuperate for a while... I want to go sowhere quiet. If there’s nothing you need to do here, I’ll be leaving today."

Zachary stared at her lower abdon. Rembering the blood on her clothes yesterday, he frowned. "What exactly is going on? Where are the test results?"

"Do you really have to see them?" Nina’s expression was serene.

’Zachary knew full well that he was entirely responsible for her current state.’

’When she loved him, she was willing to do any foolish thing for him.’

"Where do you plan to recuperate? You can do it at ho. We can get as many doctors as you need—"

"Zachary, don’t you understand? I want to go sowhere I won’t be reminded of you. It’s just for a little while. My emotions have been a wreck lately. Please, just give half a month." Nina’s voice was laced with disappointnt and sorrow.

Zachary was about to say sothing more, but when he took a closer look at her,

he realized how thin she had beco. In less than a month, she looked so fragile it seed a gust of wind could break her.

"Putting on a pathetic act," Caleb muttered under his breath.

Nina’s hands, resting by her sides, gently clenched into fists, but she didn’t argue.

Zachary suddenly shot him a cold look. "Does my wife need you to run your mouth? If you can’t stand the sight of her, then get out!"

Seeing Caleb’s face stiffen, Luna Sterling imdiately tried to smooth things over. "Zach, he didn’t an it."

"Yeah, he’s just saying this because he’s on your side," the short-haired woman chid in, before quickly adding, "I saw you go into the OB-GYN departnt yesterday. I tried to ask about you, but the doctor wouldn’t say a word. You haven’t caught so kind of disease, have you?"

Nina lifted her gaze and stared at her coldly.

The short-haired woman’s expression soured under her stare. She said resentfully, "I’m only asking for Zach’s sake. He’s your husband. He has the right to know what’s going on with you."

"Enough!" Zachary’s tone was laced with impatience.

Looking at Nina’s pale little face, he beckoned to her. "Co here, Nina."

His tone was gentle.

But Nina’s heart no longer stirred.

Standing her ground, she just looked at him calmly. "You should focus on recovering. With so many people at the hospital to take care of you, I’m sure there’s nothing I need to do."

"I said, co here," Zachary repeated.

Nina lowered her gaze and said nothing.

"Well then, we’ll head out first," Luna Sterling said with a smile.

The short-haired woman and Caleb helped her into her wheelchair and pushed her out.

In the hospital room, Nina’s lips were pressed into a thin line. She t Zachary’s cold, intense gaze for a long mont before finally asking, "Zachary, there’s sothing I’ve always wanted to ask you. Are you and Luna Sterling really just friends? You’re so protective of her. Are you sure there’s nothing else you’re hiding from ?"

Zachary froze for a second, then said, "What are you suspicious of now?"

"If you don’t want to talk about it, then let’s just forget it." Nina’s voice was impossibly calm. "To you, she’s more important than . You worry about everything concerning her, while I’m nothing. I understand that now. I won’t long for anything from you anymore. From now on, I don’t care whether you co ho or not."

After she finished, she gave a self-deprecating laugh. "She’s your ex-girlfriend, your unforgettable first love, the passion you can’t forget... My mistake was getting in the middle of it. I have no one but myself to bla for ending up like this."

"Nina, were the test results bad?" Seeing the despair in her eyes, Zachary was overco with a bad feeling.

"It doesn’t matter if the results are good or bad. It is what it is. This ti, I hope you won’t disturb . I really need to rest." Seeing that he wouldn’t admit it, Nina felt there was nothing more to say.

He still wouldn’t admit it. He had hidden Luna Sterling in the hospital before, visiting her every day—all for the child in her womb. Nina didn’t understand why he was so protective of the baby and kept it a secret from her. She figured he was probably afraid that if she knew, she would fight and argue with him, which would be detrintal to *his* child.

When she first heard the news, she hadn’t wanted to believe it, but now, she had no choice but to.

The way Zachary treated her and the way he treated Luna Sterling were completely different.

"The price for you to co ho was two million. I hope you never forget that. You were the one who gave in first. Don’t act like I forced you to co ho and trapped you here." Zachary hated how she always pushed him away and never told him the truth about anything.

’He was still her husband, in na at least!’

The light in Nina’s eyes was gone. With a listless sigh, she turned and left.

Long after she left, Zachary’s frustration hadn’t subsided.

Silas Sinclair, who was standing nearby, glanced at him several tis before he couldn’t help but say, "I can find out where she’ll be staying. You have half a month. Maybe you can go find her then and smooth things over."

"Who wants to smooth things over with her? Ever since Luna ca back, she’s been like this every other day. Forget it, I’m tired of it!" Zachary said, his face dark and his voice full of displeasure.

’Nina used to be so obedient. He never had to worry about her.’

’But after Luna Sterling returned, they started fighting constantly. The debt was paid off, and now she was unwell and needed to recuperate on her own.’

’Zachary was finally starting to understand. She was dead set on divorcing him, so she was creating all this drama.’

"She wants a divorce? Not a chance!" he bit out coldly, then closed his eyes.*****
