Back at Xiaoyun’s ho...
"Huh... Where is everyone?"
Xiaoyun curiously asked as he parked his car, looking a little confused by the fact that Leyan was the only one in the garage.
"Everyone had sothing coming up. Everyone had to stay overti for work today, other than Yuqi, but she didn’t want to go."
"Really? That bad of a timing?"
"Yes, really. Only Lily and Yuqi are ho right now, and they need to watch the kids... Stop asking so many questions."
"Okay then."
As he started up the car, he could notice an unusual mood on her face. It was almost as if she was frustrated over sothing.
"How was your eting with the experts today?" Xiaoyun curiously asked as he drove out of the garage.
"Worst eting I ever had."
"I can see that... What happened?"
"They told the project is dead in the water. And I an it literally. You know the spot we picked that had a ton of trees and grass, right?"
"Yeah..."
"It turned out that the place was full of underground water. It was going to cost even more and had the potential to contaminate the downstream river."
"Oh. It really was dead in the water."
"Exactly. I spent all that ti for nothing. Wasted all of my hard-working hours planning that out for no reason."
"Can you not just pick another location?"
As soon as Xiaoyun suggested the idea, he imdiately began to regret it as she started to raise her voice more and more.
"I already tried that, but every place, they just kept saying, ’oh, this place is too small’, or ’oh, this place has hard rock’ as if it’s just impossible to build."
Hearing Leyan mimicking a low-pitched voice as if she were the expert, Xiaoyun couldn’t help but let out a little chuckle.
"Hey! Are you laughing at ?" Leyan questioned in anger.
"What? Of course not. I’m just thinking about what Houqin is going to react when she sees you walking into her office."
"Yeah, right—"
"Hey, hey, hey, I’m driving. Don’t shove my arm like that." Xiaoyun warned as she punched his elbow in protest.
"Hmph! That’s what you get for making fun of ."
As she crossed her arms like a little girl, Xiaoyun slowly turned up the radio to mask the awkwardness in the car.
"In a small town near Shaoguan, a man had been arrested in relation to ten thousand dollar bribery charges.
We’re now live with the new Secretary of State Security, who is doing a press conference to address the matter..."
"Look, I told you Yueyue was busy today." Leyan imdiately pointed that out as Yueyue’s voice soon appeared on the radio.
"Mhm."
A few-minute drive later...
"Hello."
"Hello, Miss Leyan."
As Houqin entered the rear seats, Xiaoyun lowered the radio volu as he started the car engine once again.
"Is that Xiaoyue’s voice?" Houqin curiously asked.
"Yep. Yueyue is doing her press conference right now, and everybody else is busy. Only I could co to visit today, unfortunately."
Xiaoyun could see Houqin letting out a sigh of relief as soon as Leyan answered her question.
"But you can et the rest of them tomorrow if you want to co visit us," Leyan added as she looked back over to Houqin.
"I-I’ll when I have ti."
"Wait, don’t start the car, let go sit back with Houqin."
As Leyan exited the car, she quickly opened the rear door before sitting right next to Houqin.
"Wear your seat belt."
---
Driving down the road, the two won started chattering with each other in the back as Xiaoyun remained silent the whole ti.
Although it was extrely one-sided with Leyan asking Houqin an endless number of questions, they surprisingly got along with each other well.
"Okay, we’re at Houqin’s apartnt now."
As the two of them exited through the rear door, Leyan imdiately noticed the cracked road on the streets.
"This is your apartnt?" Leyan curiously asked.
"Yeah... Let find my key."
After waiting for a few seconds, Houqin finally took out her key, letting the two inside first before closing the door herself.
The three of them took the stairs to the second floor before she led them to her apartnt.
With the tal door open, the two were finally inside her ho at last. But an unexpected guest was sitting at the dining table.
"Mom? Dad? How are you two inside my apartnt?" Houqin questioned, her face looking genuinely shocked as if she didn’t plan for her parents to be here.
"We ca to bring you dinner since you can’t cook at ho yourself... Oh, hello, Mr.Governor, didn’t expect to see you here."
"Hello... Oh, I almost forgot to introduce them to you. They are Houqin’s parent." Xiaoyun whispered as he brought Leyan to them.
"Nice to et you two. I’m Xiaoyun’s Mom, Chen Leyan... You guys can just call Leyan if you don’t mind."
Both of them looked a little shocked as soon as Leyan ntioned herself as Xiaoyun’s mom.
In their mind, Leyan looked more like Xiaoyun’s wife, especially Houqin’s dad, whose eyes couldn’t move away from her chest.
"Ouch!"
As soon as Houqin’s mom pinched her husband’s side, he instantly looked away as if he had been caught red-handed.
"Nice to et you, Leyan... Sorry for asking this, but how old are you?" Houqin’s Mom curiously asked.
"I’m forty-one. Or forty-two. I can’t rember exactly... It’s been a while since I had my last birthday."
Xiaoyun could hear the hint of anger in her voice as he shyly scratched his head. He knew she was directing it towards him.
"You look amazing. It’s like you’re still eighteen." Houqin’s mom complints as she reaches out for a handshake.
"Thank you. You look very beautiful as well."
"Oh, don’t sugarcoat it. I’m way past my pri... Sorry for my stupid husband’s rude stare earlier."
"No worries."
As Houqin’s dad awkwardly scratches his head, his face is full of gratitude for Leyan’s forgiveness.
"Mom, Dad, you two still haven’t told them your nas."
"Oh my, how could I forget that? My na is Lin Jingyi. My husband’s na is Wen Bo."
"Nice to et you, Wen Bo."
The room’s attention soon shifted back to the two mothers as they all headed over to the living room for a seat.
"Leyan, I always wanted to et you and ask a question that had been on my mind for a very long ti since my daughter had been your son’s fiancée..."
Houqin’s face imdiately started to blush in embarrassnt as she didn’t expect her mom to call her Xiaoyun’s fiancée when she was only his girlfriend.
"What is it?"
"You actually let him have multiple wives? I saw in the newspaper that he has like twenty different wives back ho."
"He doesn’t have that many. It’s just the news that is exaggerating it, right, Xiaoyun?"
"Y-Yeah. That would be way too much. What was that newspaper na? I’m just a little curious—"
"Shush, no one let you talk... Jingyi, what do you think of my son so far? Do you think he’s a good candidate for your daughter?"
"The best husband I could think of for her. I have no problem with it—"
"Ahem."
As her husband cleared her throat, Jingyi ignored it completely. She signals Houqin to sit right next to Leyan before guiding her hand over.
"Leyan, I just want to ask a very small favor. I know I don’t have much to give, but please take this as a mother who cares for her daughter."
"Mom!" Houqin grumpily yelled.
"What is it?" Leyan curiously asked.
"Please take care of my daughter. She’s the only daughter we have, and we’re afraid she might get bullied by her husband’s other wives."
"Oh, don’t worry about that. They are the nicest people I know. She’ll be instantly welcod into the family."
Leyan paused for a second, then continued.
"Jingyi, as a mother who has three daughters. I can promise you this. Your daughter is in safe hands.
He may be the governor, but all of his wives henpeck him... My son wouldn’t dare to lay a finger on any woman without asking for their permission."
"Thank you."
As Jingyi got up from her seat and bowed down in gratitude, Xiaoyun finally couldn’t hold the grin on his face.
At the sa ti, Houqin’s face was more embarrassed than ever. She could feel that Leyan was tricking her mom.
But she was too scared to say it out as Leyan held onto her hand, seemingly signalling her to remain quiet.
"Governor, is there sothing funny?" Houqin’s dad curiously asked.
"Oh, my face was just a little stiff," Xiaoyun answered as he opened his mouth to stretch his jaw a little.
"Leyan, I wish I t you sooner. I would have given my daughter to you long ago if I knew you were Xiaoyun’s mom."
"I wish to et you sooner as well. I would have forced this dumb son of mine to take responsibility instead of keeping it awkward between them."
As the two of them got closer than ever, Xiaoyun couldn’t help but feel like he had missed a whole conversation while he was opening his jaw.
