The dense, oppressive canopy of the forest finally began to thin, giving way to a rocky, high-altitude clearing that offered a stunning, if desolate, view of the starlit sky.
The air was cold and crisp, a relief after the claustrophobic humidity of the woods.
With practiced ease, they set up camp. Julian ignited the fire with a re glance, a controlled spark of lightning setting the kindling ablaze. Clarissa and Aya began unpacking rations, while Zoe vanished and returned with an armful of dry firewood.
As the sll of reheated stew filled the air, the group settled around the fire, the day’s tension slowly lting away. The conversation, for once, wasn’t about tactics or survival.
"So," Emma began, nudging Fey with her foot where the engineer lay sprawled on a bedroll. "What did you even do before all... this? You can’t have just been lazy."
Fey cracked open one eye. "I was an engineer. A chanical engineer. I designed high-efficiency engine parts for civilian vehicles." She let out a long-suffering sigh. "It was a peaceful, quiet life of calculations and blueprints. I never asked to beco a post-apocalyptic chanic and chauffeur for a warlord’s harem."
Veronica smirked. "Your skills are marginally more useful now, at least."
"Gee, thanks," Fey deadpanned.
Across the fire, Dori was helping Clarissa sort utensils. "It’s still so strange, Clarissa. To be out here with you all. It feels like just yesterday we were sitting in Mr. Leighton’s classroom, worrying about exams and what to wear to the sumr festival."
A warm, nostalgic smile spread across Clarissa’s face. "I rember. You were always organizing study groups. You even tried to tutor that boy from the senior class... what was his na?"
Dori’s cheeks flushed pink in the firelight. "Oh, don’t remind ! He was completely hopeless. I spent more ti trying to keep him awake than actually teaching him algebra."
Emma giggled. "Wow, Dori! A tutor! I can’t picture it."
"It’s true," Clarissa confird, her voice soft. "She was very patient. And she always loved botany. She kept a little journal of pressed flowers."
Julian listened as he ate, his gaze moving from one speaker to the next. He didn’t contribute, but his presence was attentive, a silent pillar around which their lives and histories intertwined.
When Aya ntioned a complex tallurgical problem she was pondering, his eyes shifted to her, following her technical explanation with quiet interest.
When Veronica and Emma started bickering good-naturedly about the best way to pack supplies, a faint, almost invisible smirk touching his lips.
Beatrix observed the scene from her seat, a slight, uncharacteristic softening in her own weary expression.
The fire crackled, its light dancing on Celestia’s sharp features as she turned her gaze to Beatrix. "We are walking towards this ’New Order.’ It would be prudent to have more than a na. What are their capabilities? Their leadership structure?"
Beatrix instinctively touched the spot over her heart, her expression grim. "I can’t. The Mark of Scales they placed on ... it’s more than just a brand. It’s a taphysical lock. If I intentionally divulge key intelligence, it will not only alert them but... punish . Severely."
A tense silence fell, broken by Celestia’s calm voice. "Remain calm. Julian has already considered this." All eyes turned to him.
Julian t Beatrix’s worried look. "My Domination can suppress it. It won’t remove the mark, but it should interfere with its detection function long enough for you to speak. The effect will be temporary."
Beatrix’s eyes widened, a flash of anger cutting through her weariness. "You knew you could do this? Why didn’t you tell from the beginning? I’ve been carrying this burden all this ti!"
Julian’s expression didn’t change. "I only recently confird the extent of its interaction with such marks." It was a smooth, effortless lie.
The truth was, he had known his skill’s potential from the mont they made their pact; he simply hadn’t found the right mont to reveal it, preferring to keep the leverage. His Domination had been subtly active on her since their agreent, a low-level influence ensuring her compliance.
Beatrix opened her mouth to argue further, but Clarissa placed a gentle hand on her arm. "Miss Beatrix, please. We need to know. And Julian can help you now."
With a frustrated sigh, Beatrix relented. "Fine. Do it."
Julian raised a hand, a faint, dark aura shimring around his fingertips. He made a show of concentrating, though in reality, he was rely amplifying the influence that was already there. He pressed his fingers to her forehead for a mont, then pulled them away.
Beatrix flinched, expecting pain or a surge of energy, but felt nothing out of the ordinary. "Is that it?"
"The suppression is in place," Julian stated flatly. "You won’t feel it. The mark is now dormant. Speak."
Hesitantly at first, then with growing conviction as she felt no backlash, Beatrix began to talk, her voice laced with old bitterness.
"Their leader is a man nad Heikal. His skill isn’t brute force. It’s called [Karma’s Retribution]." She spat the na. "It’s a monstrous ability. The more malicious intent, the greater the force an attacker uses against him, the more powerfully it is reflected back upon them. It doesn’t just block; it punishes aggression in kind. Trying to dominate him would be... suicidal."
She touched her chest again. "The one who gave this mark is his second-in-command, a woman nad Rei. She’s the embodint of their so-called ’justice’—cold, rigid, and utterly devoted to Heikal. Her skill is [Judgnt’s Bond]. She can create these marks, and she can sense any betrayal or failure in those who bear them."
"Then there is Gab," Beatrix continued. "He leads their earthworks division. His control over the earth is formidable, he can reshape a battlefield in monts. There are at least five other high-ranking mbers with significant power, but my cover was blown before I could identify them all. I was tasked with infiltrating other factions under their banner."
She looked into the fire, her face hard. "Their public motivation is ’justice.’ It’s a lie. A pretty word they use to cloak their ambition. They amass power, subjugating or annihilating any faction that doesn’t bow to their so-called righteous order. They are conquerors, plain and simple, using a moral high ground as their weapon."
The information settled over the group. They weren’t heading towards a simple enemy, but an ideological one with a leader whose power was a perfect counter to Julian’s most direct thods.
The path to the New Order had just beco infinitely more complex.
