Dust and silence settled over the remains of the city. The once-pulsing hive was now a smoldering crater, its malevolent energy dissipated into the ashen air. The red barrier was gone, revealing a bleak, but normal, twilight sky.

Julian and Clarissa sat amidst the rubble at the city’s shattered edge, far enough from the blast zone to be safe. They were covered in gri, blood, and sweat, their bodies aching, but they were alive. For a long mont, they simply breathed, leaning against each other, listening to the absence of screeches and psychic whispers.

"That was... too close," Julian finally said, his voice a dry rasp. He coughed, a cloud of dust puffing from his lips.

Clarissa nodded against his shoulder, her own voice soft but steady. "Thank goodness it worked out. Even with all the... improvisation."

A faint, genuine smile touched Julian’s lips. He looked down at her, his usual coldness replaced by a deep, weary fondness. "You were incredibly brave back there. The way you dug, the way you attacked... it was magnificent." He paused, his thumb gently stroking the back of her hand. "It made fall in love with you all over again."

Clarissa’s cheeks, already flushed from exertion, turned a deeper shade of pink. She looked up at him, her eyes shimring with emotion. "Julian... you were amazing too. The way you protected , controlled the battlefield... and carried out of there." She squeezed his hand. "Thank you."

"No thanks are needed," he murmured, leaning his head against hers. "Protecting you is my duty. And my choice."

Julian let out a soft sigh, one of contentnt rather than weariness. He was about to suggest they head back when Clarissa’s hand tightened around his.

"It’s been so long since we were alone..." she murmured, her voice barely a whisper, carrying a weight of unspoken longing.

A rare, tender smile spread across Julian’s face. He understood. In the chaos of survival, monts of simple, quiet intimacy were the rarest treasure of all. "Then let’s have a mont. Just us."

Clarissa’s smile blossod in return, and she shifted to wrap her arms around him, resting her head against his chest, listening to the steady, strong beat of his heart. The world, for a few precious seconds, shrunk to just the two of them amidst the ruins.

It was shattered by a very deliberate, dry clearing of a throat directly behind them.

"Ahem."

Julian didn’t startle, but Clarissa jumped slightly, a flicker of pure, unguarded disappointnt flashing across her features before she swiftly schooled it into her usual gentle expression.

Standing there, arms crossed and looking thoroughly unimpressed, were Emma and Zoe. Emma was grinning like a shark who’d caught the scent of gossip.

"Well, well, well," Emma chirped, placing her hands on her hips. "Look at you two, having a cozy little mont while the rest of us were having heart attacks outside the big scary do!"

Zoe, standing beside her, nodded in solemn agreent, her eyes fixed on Julian. " too." Then, without further ado, she walked over and simply wrapped her arms around Julian from the side, burying her face against his shoulder in a silent, possessive claim of her own.

Julian accepted the additional weight with a grunt, one arm still around Clarissa, the other coming up to pat Zoe’s back awkwardly.

Clarissa’s smile beca just a tad fixed at the edges. "Oh! H-hey, you two... you made it here... really fast," she said, her voice impressively even despite the underlying note of ’you have terrible timing.’

"Fast? Fast?!" Emma exclaid, throwing her hands up. "We were panicking! One second there’s a giant red bowl over the city, the next there’s a BOOM that nearly blew out our eardrums and the bowl shatters! We thought you’d turned yourselves into confetti!" She marched over and poked Julian’s chest. "And then we find you here having a cuddle puddle! Unbelievable!"

"My apologies for making you worry," Julian said, his tone dry but carrying a hint of genuine warmth.

"Damn right you should be sorry!" Emma huffed, though her eyes sparkled with mischief more than actual anger. She tapped her lips with a finger dramatically. "And apologies should co with compensation! A kiss! Right here, right now! Co on, boss, pay up!" She puckered her lips exaggeratedly.

With an amused shake of his head, Julian obliged, leaning down to give Emma a brief but firm kiss. She imdiately lted, her earlier dramatics forgotten as she grinned triumphantly.

Clarissa, however, had reached her limit. The rare alone ti had been stolen, and now this? Her gentle deanor finally cracked with a flash of possessiveness. She tugged sharply on Julian’s sleeve. "Julian, this was supposed to be our ti. Don’t just go along with them." Before he could respond, she pulled him down and captured his lips in a deep, claiming kiss, one that clearly stated her prior claim.

Emma broke apart, sputtering. "Hey! That’s cheating! I called dibs on the apology kiss first!" She pouted, crossing her arms.

Zoe, who had been silently observing the exchange while still clinging to Julian’s arm, now looked up at him with her big, quiet eyes. She didn’t say a word. She just pointed to her own lips, her expression utterly serious and expectant.

Julian simply leaned over and gave her a firm, brief kiss as well. Zoe’s expression didn’t change much, but she gave a small, satisfied nod, her grip on his arm loosening slightly.

Suddenly, a chorus of guttural roars and shuffling footsteps echoed from the ruins behind them, growing rapidly closer.

"Enemies?" Emma snapped to attention, her playful pout vanishing.

Zoe’s nose twitched. "Many zombies. Coming. Fast."

Clarissa groaned, rubbing her temple. "They must have been drawn by the sound of the explosion. Or... other noisy activities."

"No ti to debate the cause," Julian said, his commander’s tone instantly back in place. "We disengage. Now."

Before anyone could respond, Zoe stepped forward. Her body shimred and in a blur of motion, she shifted into her massive, sleek black wolf form [Beast Mode]. She crouched low, a clear invitation.

"Hop on, unless you want to be zombie chow!" Emma whooped, scrambling onto Zoe’s broad back with practiced ease.

Julian helped Clarissa up, then swung himself on behind her, securing their position. With a powerful surge of muscles, Zoe took off, her paws eating up the ground as she raced away from the approaching horde, leaving only a cloud of dust and frustrated roars behind.

They arrived back at the temporary camp to find it already in the final stages of being packed. Dori was there, safe and sound, hurriedly stuffing the last of the bedrolls into a pack. Beside her, Celestia was calmly directing the operation.

Celestia looked up as they dismounted from Zoe who shifted back with a shake of her head. "Dori has briefed us. We started the evacuation as the barrier collapsed and an explosion was seen." Her gaze swept over Julian, assessing. "I assu the primary target is neutralized."

"Reduced to sub-atomic particles," Julian confird.

"Excellent. Then there is no reason to remain in this contaminated area." Celestia gestured neatly towards the edge of the clearing.

With a thought, Julian accessed his Inventory. There was a shimr in the air, and a large, rugged, armored all-terrain vehicle materialized on the dirt path, its engine already humming quietly as if eager to go.

"Everyone, in. Now," Julian ordered, sliding into the driver’s seat.

There was a brief, comical scramble. Emma dove for the front passenger seat. Veronica and Clarissa shared a look and took the middle row. Beatrix, Aya, and Fey piled into the back with the equipnt. Dori shyly climbed in after them. Celestia took the seat behind Julian, already studying a map.

Zoe, back in human form, was the last. She looked at the now-full vehicle, then at Julian, her head tilting.

Julian sighed fondly. "Just get in, Zoe."

She nodded, squeezing herself onto the middle row, practically on top of Clarissa and Veronica, who both let out simultaneous, exasperated "Oof!" sounds.

With everyone inside, Julian hit the accelerator. The powerful vehicle lurched forward, tearing down the broken road away from the smoldering ruins of the hive city.

After about twenty minutes of driving in focused silence, Celestia glanced at Julian in the rearview mirror. His grip on the wheel was steady, but the dark circles under his eyes were pronounced. "Julian. You look very tired. Pull over. I will drive."

Beatrix, from the back, nodded in agreent. "She’s right. You pushed yourself past multiple limits in there. You’re no good to us if you crash this thing because you nodded off."

Julian opened his mouth to protest, but a wave of dizziness hit him, confirming their words. He was running on fus, and endangering the entire group due to pride was unacceptable. With a slight nod, he guided the vehicle to a relatively smooth stretch of shoulder and stopped.

"Very well," he conceded, his voice thick with exhaustion. He unbuckled his seatbelt and slid out of the driver’s seat, swapping places with the ever-efficient Celestia.

As he stood in the cramped space between the seats, Aya looked up at him from the middle row, her eyes full of concern. "Julian, are you... really alright?"

Fey, lounging next to her, chid in with her usual dry tone. "The thing in that city was a real piece of work, huh? A lot aner than it looked from the outside."

"It was stronger because it could attack your mind directly," Dori added softly, shuddering at the mory. "It was... awful."

Julian gave Aya a small, reassuring pat on the head. "I’m fine, Aya. Just tired. It was a formidable enemy, but it’s gone now." He needed to sit, and the only available space was the middle row, currently occupied by Veronica, Clarissa, and Zoe who was half-asleep herself.

Veronica, seeing him sway slightly, let out a dramatic sigh and scooted over, patting the now-cramped spot next to her. "Ugh, fine. Sit here before you fall over and break sothing important."

Gratefully, Julian slumped into the seat. Without ceremony, he let his body tilt sideways, resting his head directly in Veronica’s lap, using her thighs as a pillow.

Veronica jolted. "Wha— What are you doing, you idiot?!" she hissed, her face flushing.

"Resting," Julian mumbled, his eyes already closed. "On your lap. You offered a seat, didn’t you?"

"I offered you a seat, not a... a bed! Ugh, never mind! Do whatever you want!" she grumbled, crossing her arms and looking stubbornly out the window.
