Eclipse Central Stronghold – Sa Ti

The command center was a cavern of shadow and steel, buried deep beneath the central spire where the red crest of Eclipse watched over empty halls. Screens lined the walls, showing feeds from fallen territories: Greenday’s gardens overgrown with Vex’s new order, Rain’s silent warehouses, Neo’s collapsed mine, Xlomoph’s dark cooling towers.

Carol stood before the largest screen, her arms crossed beneath her chest, her long black hair spilling over her shoulders. Her red eyes reflected the dim glow of the tracking array.

One by one, the signals went dark.

Carol’s jaw tightened.

She turned to face the center of the room, where Darwin sat in a high-backed chair of black iron and crimson velvet. His red hair burned like a fla in the low light, and the scar on his forehead seed to pulse with each slow beat of his heart.

"The mission failed," Carol said. Her voice was flat, professional. "Reinhardt’s team is shattered. Survivors are retreating. The Ghost drove them back."

Darwin did not move. His gray eyes, sharp as broken glass, stared at the ceiling.

"I saw," he said quietly.

Carol glanced at the tracking array again. "Reinhardt was our best Hand of Order."

"He was adequate." Darwin’s lips curved into a thin smile. "But adequate is not enough against them."

Carol’s red eyes narrowed slightly. "You’re not surprised."

"I’m not." Darwin finally lowered his gaze, eting hers. "The Ghost destroyed Greenday, Rain, Neo, and Xlomoph in less than a week. He killed Corvin in his own vault. He turned Vex against us. He even broke one of my Hands of Order without breaking a sweat." He chuckled, a low, rumbling sound. "Yes, Carol. I knew Reinhardt would fail."

Carol absorbed this without a change in expression. "Then what is our next move?"

Darwin stood. He was tall, lean, his movents fluid like a predator who had just spotted prey. He walked to the window that overlooked the central stronghold’s courtyard, where Eclipse soldiers drilled under floodlights.

"The Ghost will co here," Darwin said. "Directly. He has cut our supply lines. He has taken our resources. He has humiliated our commanders." He turned his head slightly, his gray eyes catching the light. "Now he thinks we’re weak. And weak prey tempts the hunter."

Carol stepped closer. "You want him to co."

"I want him to try." Darwin’s smile widened. "We may be weakened, Carol. But we are not broken. And a wounded animal is the most dangerous kind."

He turned fully to face her. The scar on his forehead seed to glow brighter.

"Prepare the defenses. Double the patrols. Activate the inner sanctum’s lockdown protocols."

Carol nodded. "I will also mobilize our best fighters."

"Yes." Darwin’s voice dropped, becoming intimate, almost playful. " summon the Crimson Reapers."

Carol’s red eyes flickered. "All of them?"

"All of them." Darwin cracked his knuckles, one by one. "It’s been a long ti since I’ve had a real fight. A long ti since soone made my blood burn like this."

He looked out the window again, toward the dark horizon where Greenday lay.

"The Ghost thinks he’s hunting ," Darwin murmured. "But he’s wrong. I’ve been waiting for soone like him. Soone strong enough to make this fun."

Carol allowed herself the smallest of smiles. "I’ll inform the Reapers. We will be ready."

"Good." Darwin raised his hand, and from his palm, a thin thread of crimson liquid began to drip. It coalesced into a spinning orb, sharp as a blade, humming with contained violence. "Let them co."

He clenched his fist. The orb shattered, spraying red droplets across the floor, where they sizzled and smoked.

"Because when they arrive," Darwin said, his gray eyes burning, "they will learn what it ans to face the Crimson Sovereign."

Greenday Compound – Nightfall

The sun had set hours ago. In its place, a thin crescent moon hung over the broken landscape, offering barely enough light to see by.

Julian stood at the head of the assembly, his dark hair pulled back, his dark blue eyes scanning the rows of soldiers.

Zoe. Emma. Fey. Dori.

But they were different tonight.

Vex noticed. She had been watching them for the past ten minutes, her arms crossed, her expression unreadable. Finally, she stepped closer to Fey.

"They look different," Vex said quietly. "Yesterday, your blue-haired friend could barely lift her arm after Xlomoph. Now she’s bouncing on her heels." She lowered her voice. "What did you give them?"

Fey glanced at her, one eyebrow raised. A small, rare smile tugged at the corner of her lips.

"That’s a secret," Fey said.

"Right." Vex exhaled through her nose. "Secrets."

Emma overheard and grinned. She was practically vibrating with energy, flas licking between her fingers like playful kittens. "Don’t worry, Vex. You’ll get your turn soday. Maybe."

"Vex," Julian said. His voice was low, calm. "You know Eclipse better than anyone here. What should we be watching for?"

Vex held his gaze for a long mont. Then she uncrossed her arms and pointed toward the eastern horizon, where the red glow of Eclipse’s central spire stained the clouds.

"Their regular soldiers are nothing," she said. "They’ve relied on Eclipse’s reputation for too long. Fear made them lazy." She lowered her hand. "But there’s one thing you need to fear."

Julian waited.

"The Crimson Reapers."

Emma stepped closer, her flas dying down. "Reapers? Edgy na."

Vex didn’t smile. "Darwin’s elite. His personal execution squad. There are only twelve of them, but each one has killed more people than your whole team combined." She looked at Julian.

Fey looked up from her data-slate. "Skills?"

"All of them are multi-skill users. Darwin hand-picked them from the strongest survivors across the wasteland. So control tals. So manipulate flesh. One of them," Vex’s jaw tightened, "can stop hearts with a look."

Dori paled. "A look?"

"It’s a curse skill. Eye contact. If you et her gaze, your heart seizes. Three seconds later, you’re dead." Vex looked at Julian. "There’s no counter except blindfolds. Or killing her before she sees you."

Julian absorbed this without a change in expression. "Twelve Reapers. What about Darwin himself?"

Vex’s left hand twitched toward the broken-chain emblem on her jacket.

"Darwin," she said slowly, "is sothing else. His skill lets him generate and control a crimson liquid. Blood-like, but not blood. It can be a blade, a whip, a cloud of needles. He can fire it like a bullet, or wrap it around you like a serpent." She paused. "And if it gets inside your body, through a cut or a breath, he can control your mutations. Turn your own body against you."

Emma’s grin finally disappeared. "That’s terrifying."

"Yes," Vex said. "That’s why he’s the Crimson Sovereign."

"You’re afraid," Julian said.

Vex nodded. "Terrified. But fear doesn’t matter anymore. My daughter is in that Cradle. And I’ll walk through all twelve Reapers and Darwin himself to get her back." She t Julian’s eyes. "So yes. We fight."

Julian raised a hand.

"Then open the gate."

Vex turned to the main gate of the Greenday compound. Two fighters grabbed the heavy chains and pulled. The iron-reinforced doors groaned, scraping against the ground, revealing the dark road beyond.

The road to Eclipse.

Julian walked through first. Zoe at his right. Dori at his left. Emma and Fey behind them. Then Vex and her Greenday veterans. Then the rest.

The moon was thin, but the path was lit by the distant crimson glow of Eclipse’s spire.
