Over the next two days, Sunny devoted himself entirely to gathering every scrap of information he could about the Bright Castle and its inhabitants.

With their departure looming, he grew bolder than ever with his shadow, sending the silent companion slipping through forbidden corridors, echoing eting halls heavy with whispered deals, dusty storage rooms packed with supplies, bustling workshops where Artisans hamred away at new creations, and the training grounds where Guards drilled without rcy.

He observed hardened Hunters returning from brutal expeditions, their armor scarred and their eyes distant with exhaustion.

He studied Pathfinders hunched over faded maps, arguing routes through the ever-shifting dangers of the Dark City.

Under Tessai's stern supervision, he watched Guards train relentlessly, their movents precise yet filled with underlying tension.

He morized the faces of influential Artisans who moved through the halls like they owned secrets, and he listened intently to every rumor swirling around Seishan, Harus, Gemma, Kido, and especially Xeleray, the enigmatic leader of the Night Watchers whose na carried both respect and fear.

The only ones he continued to avoid at all costs were Seishan and her Handmaidens—after their previous encounter, Sunny had zero interest in testing whether that sharp-eyed lieutenant could truly sense his shadow lurking nearby.

Elysia occasionally joined him during these investigations, though her approach differed sharply from his stealthy thods, bringing a warmth and openness that balanced his caution.

Where Sunny relied on silent observation from the shadows, Elysia preferred to watch people in plain sight, lingering in common areas with a cheerful smile that disard even the most suspicious residents.

She listened to conversations with genuine curiosity, compared subtle shifts in behavior, and asured reactions that spoke volus about hidden loyalties and fears.

Several tis, she pointed out tiny details Sunny had completely overlooked, like the way certain Guards lowered their heads just a fraction when specific Hunters passed by, or how the Handmaidens grew tense and deferential the instant Seishan entered a room.

She noticed the subtle undercurrents of anxiety whenever Harus's na ca up in casual talk, threads of power and old grudges that wove through the fortress like invisible strings.

By the end of their stay, both of them had pieced together a far clearer, and far more unsettling, understanding of the Bright Castle than when they had first arrived.

And neither of them liked what they had learned—the place was a web of fragile alliances, quiet desperation, and carefully guarded ambitions that could unravel at any mont.

Eventually, the week they had paid for with their hard-earned tribute ca to a close.

Sunny, Cassie, and Elysia made their way toward the massive gates, the weight of the fortress's stone walls pressing on them like an unspoken threat.

Surprisingly, Sunny felt a genuine wave of relief washing over him as they prepared to leave.

The settlent waiting outside was filthy beyond words, filled with the stench of unwashed bodies and decay.

It was dangerous, with monsters lurking just beyond the edges.

It was miserable, a place where hope seed to wither under the gray sky.

Yet sohow, stepping away from the Bright Castle felt like escaping a beautifully decorated cage that had slowly been closing in around their necks.

At the gates, they encountered Harper, the nervous Sleeper who had helped them settle in.

His face fell when he realized they would not be extending their stay, his eyes reflecting a mix of disappointnt and quiet understanding.

"I'm sorry you couldn't remain longer," Harper said softly, his voice tinged with genuine regret.

"But don't lose hope. Lord Gunlaug is kinder than most realize. Perhaps you'll return soon, once things settle."

Sunny forced a polite smile, though it felt strained on his face, his cynical nature making the words taste bitter.

"I hope not," he replied bluntly, earning a small, knowing chuckle from Elysia beside him through their shared bond.

A few monts later, the three of them stepped beyond the heavy gates and left the Bright Castle behind them at last.

Standing beneath the familiar gray sky once more, Sunny felt an unexpected sense of freedom blooming in his chest, like shedding chains he hadn't fully acknowledged.

Beside him, Elysia stretched her arms high overhead and released a long, theatrical sigh of relief, her cheerful energy cutting through the tension like sunlight piercing clouds.

Even Cassie's usually tense posture relaxed slightly, her gentle empathy allowing her to breathe easier now that they were free from the fortress's watchful eyes.

The place they had searched for so desperately had turned out to be little more than a gilded prison, its comforts hiding deeper rot beneath the surface.

"What do we do now?" Cassie asked quietly, her voice carrying that thoughtful concern for everyone around her.

Sunny answered without hesitation, his pragmatic side kicking in.

"We find Nephis."

"And Senrix," Elysia added warmly, her affectionate tone lighting up the mont as she reached out through the Shadow Bond to share a spark of optimism.

Sunny paused for a beat, then nodded firmly, the loyalty he had co to feel for their growing group overriding his usual suspicion.

"And Senrix."

Finding them proved far harder than they had expected, the settlent sprawling endlessly in a chaotic maze of crude shelters and desperate lives packed far tighter than any of them rembered.

Exhausted faces passed by them in a constant, weary stream as they navigated the filth-strewn paths.

So people looked utterly hungry, their cheeks hollow and eyes sunken from days without proper als.

So appeared deeply afraid, glancing over their shoulders at every distant roar from the wilderness.

Others simply looked numb, as if the Forgotten Shore had drained every last drop of spirit from them long ago.

The contrast between this outer settlent and the relative order of the Bright Castle felt almost absurdly stark.

Inside the fortress, people actually lived with so asure of structure and security.

Outside, they rely survived from one grim day to the next, clinging to existence by the thinnest threads.

Fear, hunger, exhaustion, and despair etched themselves onto nearly every face Sunny saw, a constant reminder of the world's cruelty.

Yet ironically, he found himself thinking that these ragged souls might actually possess more raw freedom than those living under Gunlaug's watchful protection within the castle walls—freedom bought at the terrible price of constant vulnerability.

As they pressed on, they began hearing scattered stories that brought a spark of recognition.

Tales circulated about a silver-haired swordswoman who had made her ho near the old white stone road, her quiet strength earning wary respect from locals.

Other rumors spoke of a black-haired giant who hunted monsters with such casual ease that residents had started treating his presence like a natural disaster occurring in reverse—a force that cleared threats instead of causing them.

Several wide-eyed survivors even claid that a powerful Fallen Monster had wandered dangerously close to the settlent's edge only to vanish shortly afterward, its massive corpse later providing at that fed dozens of starving families for days.

The descriptions matched perfectly, filling the group with quiet anticipation.

It had to be Nephis and Senrix, their companions who had carved out their own path in this harsh place.

The thought of reuniting sent a subtle warmth through the Shadow Bond, Elysia's cheerful presence amplifying the shared hope.

Eventually, they found them at last.

Their makeshift ho stood near the very edge of the settlent, right beside the ancient white stone road, pieced together from scavenged ruins and abandoned materials in a way that perched precariously close to the platform's sheer drop.

Nephis sat atop the sloped roof, her posture calm and watchful as she observed the faint hints of sunrise breaking through the eternal gray.

Nearby, a massive figure sat almost motionless on the ground, one powerful arm resting casually across a raised knee while his dark gaze fixed steadily on the distant horizon.

It was Senrix, the giant Sleeper looking more like an ancient statue carved from unyielding stone and forgotten by ti than a living person.

The mont Elysia spotted him, she broke into a bright, genuine smile, her affectionate nature shining through despite his intimidating appearance.

The contrast between his terrifying build and his actual relaxed, friendly personality never failed to amuse her, a quiet chuckle escaping through their bond to Sunny and Cassie.

Noticing their approach, Nephis jumped down from the roof with graceful precision, landing lightly on the uneven ground.

Senrix, for his part, simply unfolded his massive fra and stood with surprising fluidity, offering a wide, easy grin that transford his stern features into sothing far more approachable.

Sunny couldn't help but grin back, the deep loyalty he felt for his companions bubbling up despite his usual cynicism.

"Hey, Neph. Long ti no see," he called out, his voice laced with sarcastic relief.

Senrix let out a booming laugh, clapping a heavy hand on Nephis's shoulder in a brotherly gesture before turning to the newcors.

"Took you lot long enough! I was starting to think the castle had swallowed you whole. Next ti, skip the fancy walls and co straight here—we've got better company and fewer backstabbing politics."

His tone was light and talkative, even as he complained lightly about the wait, true to his habit of joking through inconveniences while clearly relieved to see them safe.

Inside, the building proved surprisingly spacious despite its rough, patchwork appearance from the outside.

Broken furniture lay scattered across the floor in disorganized piles, and cold winds slipped persistently through cracks in the makeshift walls, carrying the chill of the Forgotten Shore.

Several obvious repairs remained unfinished, with tools and materials stacked in one corner as if waiting for a quieter mont.

"This place needs serious work," Sunny observed dryly, his observant eyes picking out every flaw even as he felt a strange sense of comfort in the humble space.

Nephis simply shrugged, her calm and responsible deanor shining through as she glanced around with quiet acceptance.

Compared to the endless nights they had spent sleeping on jagged rocks during their journey, this ramshackle shelter felt like an unexpected luxury, a small victory clawed from the harsh world.

Then Cassie stepped forward with a small bundle she had carried from the castle, her gentle empathy clear in the thoughtful gift.

"I brought you sothing," she said softly, her voice warm with care.

Nephis accepted it with a faint, grateful smile that softened her usually stoic features.

"Thank you, Cassie. That ans more than you know."

She hesitated for a mont, then gestured toward a nearby table.

"Do you want breakfast? We have plenty."

Pulling away a simple cloth covering revealed a mountain of roasted at, enough to sustain several people for days in this starving settlent.

The group had expected Nephis and Senrix to be scraping by like everyone else, but this abundance left them stunned.

Sunny froze in place, Elysia blinked rapidly in surprise, and even Cassie looked montarily confused, her empathetic heart touched by the unexpected generosity.

"Where did you get all that?" Sunny asked, his blunt curiosity cutting through the silence.

Nephis appeared slightly embarrassed, rubbing the back of her neck in a rare display of vulnerability.

"A large Nightmare Creature ca down the road a few nights ago. So people and I managed to kill it."

Elysia glanced knowingly toward Senrix, her cheerful insight picking up on the unspoken truth.

The giant calmly looked away, but a playful smirk tugged at his lips as he finally spoke up.

"What? Don't look at like that. The thing was huge, and yeah, I might've taken most of the hits. My armor's still smoking from it—complaining about the repairs already. But hey, fresh at beats starving any day."

Sunny imdiately understood the full picture, a spark of admiration mixing with his pragmatic assessnt.

"So people?" he echoed with a raised eyebrow.

Neither Nephis nor Senrix offered more details at first, their shared silence speaking volus about the quiet burdens they had shouldered together.

Cassie blinked, her self-sacrificing nature prompting concern.

"I thought Gunlaug's n were supposed to protect the settlent from threats like that."

Nephis shook her head firmly, her protective instincts as the group's emotional anchor coming through clearly.

"They protect the castle and its chosen few. If monsters wander in from the road, they usually do nothing unless it threatens the walls directly."

Suddenly, Sunny understood exactly why every house nearby stood abandoned, their windows dark and doors barred against the constant peril.

Living this close to the road ant becoming the first line of defense against every Nightmare Creature erging from the wilderness—a deadly gamble few were willing to take.

Naturally, nobody wanted to live here in this exposed position.

Nobody, that is, except Nephis with her unyielding determination, and apparently Senrix, who bore the weight with his reliable courage and cheerful shield-like presence.

He stared at them both, the weight of their choices settling in.

"If that's true, why would you choose to live here of all places?"

Nephis glanced toward the cracked window, then out at the empty white stone road stretching into the gray distance, her voice steady yet carrying a rare note of quiet contentnt.

"It's quiet out here. Away from the crowds and the sches."

A small, genuine smile appeared on her face, humanizing her disciplined exterior in a way that ward the group.

"I like it."

Beside her, Senrix simply nodded once in solid agreent, his relaxed posture radiating that dependable strength.

Through the Shadow Bond, Elysia sent a gentle wave of affection and understanding, her bright optimism bridging any lingering gaps as she added softly, "And now we're all here together again. That makes it feel like ho already."

Sohow, in that mont, their simple words and shared presence explained everything—the quiet resilience, the found family they were building, and the trust that bound them tighter than any cage the Bright Castle could offer.
