It was a night owl.
Its bright black eyes stared silently at Pei Ze. It slowly opened its beak, but the voice that ca out was a deep, resonant male human voice.

"Yes, Teacher," Pei Ze replied respectfully.
The night owl gave a slight nod, flapped its wings, and soared into the sky, disappearing into the night in the blink of an eye.

From her breathless appearance, it was clear she had run at full speed the entire way.
"Good work."
Pei Ze nodded at her, then led the two of them into the encampnt.
