Iris:

Imagine you are getting defeated left and right.

You have only t disappointnt so far, and then you return ho to find your mother sitting on the couch, stirring more trouble for you.

"So, what did he say?" my mother asked, tapping her fingers on the couch’s armrest.

She had sat down the mont I walked in, not even letting the kids spend more ti with before sending them back to their rooms.

"I didn’t speak with him," I stated, and my mother’s frown deepened.

"Why not?" she questioned.

I wondered if she was so bad at reading faces that she could never tell what her daughter was going through, enough to stop asking questions that already made uncomfortable.

"By the ti I got ready to speak with him, I realized he had already left," I lied, and my mother rolled her eyes.

"Well, then you are going to go and speak with him now. He must have co back. He must be ho by now," my mother remarked, and I began to grunt.

"I just ca back after a long day outside. Let spend so ti with my kids, then I’ll play gas for you," I snapped, rising from the couch.

"You are not stepping away from like that," my mother warned, but I did not care.

I left and went into my children’s room. Spending ti with them felt good.

"Mommy, is Daddy going to co ho today?"

The mont I entered, my kids began asking questions about him.

That was the part that hurt the most. I could never be free of his shadow, and that worried even more.

What would happen when I finally left? Would my kids forget about him?

Would they keep asking nonstop where their father was? Would they hate when they grew up?

"Mommy?"

Colin approached and gently placed his hand on the back of mine.

I had been sitting on his bed, staring into the distance.

"It’s okay. You don’t have to answer us. We will spend ti with you, even if he doesn’t co ho today," Colin whispered, always so thoughtful.

"But we can go and play with our Aunt Zoe," Amy added, jumping up and down on her bed.

The second I heard Zoe’s na, I snapped myself out of my thoughts.

"No!" I snapped, and Amy instantly stopped jumping.

She looked offended right away, the way any child does when soone raises their voice at them.

I noticed the way Amy’s face changed when I snapped at her.

I had not wanted to, but today’s events and everything happening around had pushed into becoming toxic.

Her small shoulders stiffened and she looked down at her feet.

My heart skipped a beat and guilt took over .

I stood from Colin’s bed, stepped to hers, and sat down.

I held her hand and guided her into my lap. When she settled, I gently brushed her hair away from her cheek.

"It is okay, sweetheart," I murmured. "I didn’t an to speak like that. I only ant that Aunt Zoe is busy too. I don’t want you and Colin going there and bothering her all the ti." I tried to make up an excuse.

Amy lifted her eyes a little, but it was Colin who ca toward again and placed his hand on my knee.

"It’s fine, Mommy," he whispered. "We can play here too. It’s okay. We don’t have to play with the others. You are enough for us."

He was always this way, reminding that I had him. He was so thoughtful, almost like a guard for at such a young age.

"Good. Then keep playing, okay? I’ll go and freshen up," I told them, rising from the bed after setting Amy down.

As I stepped out of the room and walked toward the living room, I saw Luca entering from outside.

The mont our eyes t, I rolled my eyes to show him I was tired of running into him. I headed straight to my room.

Inside, I grabbed a towel and went into the bathroom. The shower was quick but enough to calm the tension in my muscles.

When I stepped out, I pulled on gray pants and a gray hoodie, tying the strings a little tighter than needed.

The mont I opened the door and stepped back into my room, I froze. Luca was sitting on the couch. His expression was not playful this ti.

"Why do you always roll your eyes when you look at ?" he asked with genuine curiosity, not teasing .

"That is because looking at you makes tired," I replied, hoping to hurt his feelings.

"Well, I think your opinion of will change the minute I have a crown of an alpha to wear."

The mont he brought that up again, my gaze shifted to him.

I did not know if he was truly that unaware to not realize that this was the main reason I kept my distance.

I chose not to respond, but him ntioning it again was a clear reminder that he was not soone I should trust.

That was when Scarlett knocked on the open door.

"Yes, Scarlett?" I asked, assuming she was coming to tell us breakfast was ready since it was early morning.

"Alpha King Kash is here."

The mont she said his na, I felt my color change, and I could tell even Luca noticed.

I stared at Scarlett for a few seconds before stepping out of the room to see what Kash was here to do now.

If he planned to give excuses, it was too late.

But the mont I reached the living room, instead of finding a distraught, guilty Kash, I saw a confident man dressed in all black, freshly showered, his arms resting wide as he held up a box of herbs.

That was when I realized he had not co here to explain himself to a foolish woman who could not move on from him.

He had co here to give his son another dosage, even after I had told him it was not working.
