Iris:
I took a slow breath, trying to calm myself before greeting Kash.
I did not want him to see that I had rushed out of my room because of him.
I straightened my clothes and forced my face to relax as I stepped farther into the living room.
Deep inside, I felt embarrassed for thinking he had co to explain himself.
How many tis was I going to embarrass myself by acting as if I still had the right to question him or be upset with him?
From the corner of my eye, I saw my mother standing in her doorway.
She did not look pleased. The dicine did not work. I had told him, yet here he was, being stubborn as always.
He knew I had seen him with soone else. The sa soone he claid he had not been sleeping with.
It was not that I expected anything after our relationship ended.
It was the fact that he was still lying. Why not just say the truth and free from these feelings once and for all?
Kash got up and began walking toward the children’s room. I rolled my eyes and reached it before him.
"Amy, sweetheart, go outside for a bit, please," I told her gently.
She looked confused, then saw Kash behind . She jumped off the bed, spread her arms, and rushed to him.
"Daddy, Daddy, I’ve missed you."
He chuckled and lifted her into his arms. He spoke with her for a few minutes before handing her over to Scarlett.
Colin sat on the bed watching his father in silence. I already knew sothing was bothering him.
He had that tense look he got whenever he was stressed.
"My son didn’t greet today," Kash remarked playfully as he stepped farther inside.
My mother and I stood at the doorway watching them.
"Are you here to give that dicine again?" Colin asked, letting him know exactly what was on his mind.
He had told many tis that he did not like the taste, and seeing the blue box probably confird why Kash was here.
"This is for your own betternt. Once you get better, we will plan more trips like we had the other day," Kash told him as he sat beside him.
Colin instantly brightened. Kash mixed the dicine into a glass of water, lifted Colin’s head, and helped him drink it.
My body tensed.
That was when my mother stepped too close from behind and whispered into my ear, "Your ex-husband is very stubborn. He is making angry enough that I might do sothing drastic so he finally learns to listen to ."
Her words made turn slightly toward her, nervous about what she ant.
Before she could respond to my stare, I heard Colin gasp and my heart dropped.
I snapped my head back toward him. He lay stiff in the bed, his eyes darting upward toward the ceiling as if he could not move.
"No, no, no," I whispered, rushing to his side.
I sat down and rubbed his hands and arms, trying to calm him.
"Colin, look at . It’s okay. Mommy is here. Please, Colin."
Tears fell from my eyes.
"We should call the doctors," Kash panicked.
He hunched over and placed his hand on his son’s forehead.
I had never seen his body shake so much.
For an alpha king to look this frightened, it showed how much he cared for his son.
That was when my mother barged in.
"Did you not know it was not working?" she yelled at Kash, making both of us turn toward her. "Every ti you give him a dose, he has a fit. His body is resisting the dicine."
Her words made freeze. She was lying. She was such a good actress.
My son was not having a fit because of the dicine.
It was because she had woken up her own son earlier. But I could not say anything.
Not now. Colin needed .
Kash looked furious as he watched her.
"You do not care about him," my mother continued. "You only want to act like you are doing sothing when you are not. You force this dicine on him even when you know it is useless."
Kash raised his palm toward her, warning her that he had heard enough.
He did not know my mother did not understand such limits.
"Do not say another word. I care about my son," Kash yelled back, though there was a slight shake in his voice. He was hurting too.
"Of course you do not." My mother would not stop. "You want a quick cure so you do not have to work harder. Even this dicine was obtained by Luca, was it not?"
As she continued, Kash turned toward her slowly. I saw his jaw tighten.
He stared at her as if he was at his limit, as if he was about to make a mistake that would give her sothing real to complain about.
Before he could speak, Colin’s breathing steadied.
"He’s fine now," I said, drawing both of their attention back to him.
I hugged my son right away while Kash remained frozen.
My mother suddenly acted like she had only been overwheld.
"Do not mind my words. I am only a grandmother who is worried. But it is true. You were never there for your children before, and now you want to force this dicine even if it is not working. If you cannot find a real cure, at least do not give him sothing that is harming him."
She continued in the sa malicious way, hitting him where it hurt the most.
Kash did not respond. I could tell he was hurt, because seeing him speechless was sothing new.
He stepped out of the room, and I glared at my mother.
"What?" she asked, shrugging her shoulders, no longer pretending to be distraught now that he was gone.
I got up to go after him, wanting to tell him he should return and sit with his son.
I did not think he was a bad father. But when I reached the living room, I found him standing with his back to , a phone pressed to his ear.
"We should get married in fifteen days."
My breath caught when I realized he was speaking to his fiancée. He ended the call and turned around.
That was when our eyes t. The realization hit him that I had heard him.
Not that it mattered. I had already seen him walk out of her bed that morning.
