"Fine, I will be there in a minute. I just don’t understand why you had to fucking bring them wherever I am. Why do they need to be closer to ?" she yelled into the phone.
She stretched her neck forward, scanning the road to make sure no one was around.
"Yeah, yeah, they are sick. Then take them back ho, okay? My father will take care of everything," she added sharply.
"Fine, I’m coming. Just keep them silent. I don’t want to hear them cry when I arrive," she muttered.
As I stood there, I felt as if life had drained out of .
She cut the call and let out a deep breath.
"Those little annoying pieces of shit. I should have killed them," she spat.
There was no guilt in her voice. No regret.
I stood frozen, listening to her words, trying to process what I had just heard.
The children were hers. That much was certain.
The father could be , or he could be soone else.
From the way she spoke about the man who left her in his clothes, it could have been , unless there were others who had done the sa.
Then her words settled in.
She wanted to kill the children.
My children?
Once she ended the call, she hurried away.
At the sa ti, I watched her dial another number as she got into the car.
"And if anyone asks where I am going, just tell them I’m headed to get so tests done," she instructed.
From her tone, I guessed she was speaking to a warrior, probably her driver.
I needed to follow her. That was the only plan forming in my head.
While she headed toward the main road outside the mansion, I slipped into the guest house and climbed into my car.
I waited until her vehicle pulled out. Then I followed, keeping a careful distance the entire ti.
I was extrely anxious.
"What do you think?" I asked my wolf, my fingers clutching the steering wheel as my eyes narrowed at her car.
Traffic was heavy, which helped blend in.
"Maybe we heard it wrong. We are just desperate to find our worth and to feel like we belong sowhere. Maybe that is why we misunderstood," he suggested.
I let out a low grunt.
"I know what I heard, and I think you are the one who is afraid of finding out the truth," I shot back.
I took deep breaths.
"Hey, don’t take your anger out on . I’m not the one who wants your children dead," he retorted.
His words stung.
We fell silent.
"I’m sorry," he said after a mont.
"I’m just confused myself. If it is true, then it changes a lot in our life," he added.
I nodded anxiously.
That was the truth.
To have children with a woman like Lara, only to learn she did not even want them, and if she ever discovered they were Lycans, she would be the first to want them dead.
We kept following her until she stopped at a hotel.
It was not well known. It looked more like a run-down motel.
Of course, she chose a place where no one would pay attention.
I parked at a distance and stayed inside my car.
She went in. About half an hour later, she ca out with an even more irritated look on her face.
Behind her were the people she had been speaking to. A man and a woman carried two children, a boy and a little girl.
The mont I saw them, my heart skipped.
"Take them to a nearby hospital, or maybe a far away pack. Don’t bring them to the main hospital. Their fever will go down. Don’t worry," she instructed with a dismissive wave before getting into her car.
The children were crying.
They stretched their hands toward her, trying to reach her, but she did not stop.
The man and woman holding them shook them roughly.
They looked irritated.
They were my unwanted children.
My poor children.
They looked about the sa age as Colin and Amy, maybe one or two years older.
But their fate was worse, because unlike Iris, their mother was cruel.
Tears ford in my eyes as Lara drove away and my children continued to cry.
"Shut the fuck up, or I will leave you for the coyotes to feed on you. You hear ?" the woman threatened.
She gripped my daughter’s little face in her hand and dug her nails into her cheeks.
That changed everything.
I was not going to let my children be treated with such hostility.
They deserved love.
They deserved their father.
The man and woman placed them into another car and drove toward a distant hospital, following Lara’s instructions.
I pulled out and followed them.
After driving for a while, I realized they had chosen one of the most neglected packs and the filthiest hospital I had ever seen.
The two of them kept yelling at my children as they carried them inside for a checkup.
When they ca back out, they looked irritated.
"So it’s just a viral flu. These two are so dramatic," the woman muttered to the man.
He responded by shaking my son roughly to silence him.
"Yeah, let’s give them two or three doses so they sleep," he whispered.
They spoke about my children in that tone, as if they were a burden.
They got back into their car, and I followed. I refused to let them out of my sight.
When they returned to the motel, I parked quickly and stepped out before they did.
I walked in behind them.
They barely glanced at . I doubt they thought much of it.
I watched carefully and saw which room they took my children into.
I lingered outside, listening to them yell at my children.
Anger bubbled inside . Then my phone lit up.
Iris’s mother was calling again.
I had rejected her calls before, but now I stared at the closed door, knowing my children were behind it.
If I took them, where would I go?
There was only one place I could take my children and live peacefully.
The Lycan community.
And to reach it, I might have to shake hands with the devils again.
