Wang Yun’s series of daring moves had the viewers in the livestream on edge, holding their breath.
It seed like an impossible sequence of actions. In just a few seconds, he went from blowing on the leaf to tossing stones into the river, to plucking five snake flowers and yanking them down in one go. No hesitation. And then he sprinted up the tree.
After climbing in just two or three moves, he scattered sulfur powder down at the furious snake swarm below, and finally, he used a slingshot to launch the snake flowers straight at the feet of the inspectors. Then, he disappeared into the branches, steadying his breathing.
The speed of it all was unreal.
Anyone else would have taken too long. If he’d been even a second slower, the inspectors would have spotted him, ruining the entire plan.
“I can’t take it! I thought I was going to pass out! My heart stopped the whole ti!”
“Oh My God! That swarm of snakes gave chills! How did he even manage to pull that off?”
“Did you guys see how fast he climbed the tree? I blinked, and he was already at the top!”
“Sa here! I took one sip of water and missed it. If I’d known, I would’ve let myself die of thirst!”
“I saw it, man! It was like he teleported or sothing!”
The chat in the livestream exploded with excitent. Everyone’s eyes were glued to the approaching inspection team, easily over a hundred people.
Leading them, Captain Wu Mingyu was talking into his radio, likely calling for more backup. This was the last section of the entire jungle. If they didn’t find Wang Yun here, their whole search plan would fail. But after what had just happened, all signs pointed to Wang Yun being nearby.
“I heard four splashes! It must be them, all four of them,” Wu Mingyu said to the nearby Captain.
“I heard it too! When you guys rushed over, you missed sothing on the hillside behind you. There’s a crumpled ball of paper on the hillside—looks freshly tossed. And there’s also a broken flower,” Ying Yuezi said.
She handed the snake flower to Wu Mingyu and the others. They shone a flashlight on the broken stem. The stem still had fresh liquid that hadn’t dried yet. There was even a layer of dirt clinging to it, and the flower itself looked fresh, with no sign of wilting.
“Get in the water, search!” Wu Mingyu ordered after examining the snake flower.
His team imdiately took out the underwater model fish they had prepared earlier. Five in total, each equipped with a high-definition pinhole cara, capable of capturing everything happening underwater.
These underwater model fish were controlled remotely and were typically used for exploring nature or conducting oceanic work.
“Put them all in,” Wu Mingyu continued. “And report to Captain Alfa. Have him figure out where this river leads. The current’s too strong right now, we can’t risk going in just yet.”
He looked at the fast-flowing river. It was wide—about twenty to thirty ters—and with such a strong current, crossing it was nearly impossible.
But if soone were experienced enough, and could hold their breath, they might stand a chance of surviving by letting the current carry them downstream.
For soone as ruthless and desperate as Wang Yun, he’d likely choose that second option. Still, Wu Mingyu didn’t want to act rashly. Their protective suits weren’t suited for a river dive, and they didn’t know how deep it was. It would be safer to track where the river flowed and catch them at that location.
Just as the inspectors were about to release the chanical fish into the water, they started feeling strange sensations on their protective suits.
At first, they thought it was just the surrounding weeds catching on their suits, so no one paid it much attention.
Then, one team mber shined a flashlight down.
Screams erupted instantly.
“Ahhhh! Snakes!”
“Holy crap! What is this? Centipedes—there are centipedes everywhere!”
“Don’t move! There’s a giant toad right in front of you. No, wait, that’s a poisonous toad!”
“Help! Help! Sothing bit my leg! This snake is trying to crawl in!”
“Ahhhh! My leg is getting squeezed, It hurts!”
Panic, horror, shouting, and chaos—all erupted at once.
Wu Mingyu aid his flashlight around and felt his scalp tingle with fear. Just as he froze in shock, he felt sothing heavy land on his back, followed by an ear-piercing scream right next to his ear.
“Ahhh! I’m terrified! I’m so scared of snakes!”
It was Ying Yuezi.
Normally composed and sharp-witted, Ying Yuezi, the only brave and intelligent female Captain, was clinging to Wu Mingyu like a terrified koala. Her face had turned pale, and she was trembling uncontrollably, completely losing her cool.
“Stay calm! Get the realgar powder out, quick! Everyone, take it out and spread it around. And the antidote spray! dics, get over here, now. We’ve got injuries here!”
Wu Mingyu forced himself to stay calm, shouting at the top of his lungs. But with Ying Yuezi screaming in his ear, he could barely hear his own voice. Instinctively, he continued yelling commands.
anwhile, chaos reigned among the other team mbers. They were running around in a panic, scattering in all directions. The dics, who had been following closely behind with their dical kits, were frozen in place.
They were too terrified to move.
All around them, snakes stared nacingly, as if ready to strike the mont anyone dared take a step. So snakes even leaped into the air, launching themselves at the inspectors.
This was beyond belief. This place was straight out of a nightmare.
“Calm down! Stop running, don’t struggle! The more you run, the more they attack! Damn it, did we just stir up a snake’s nest or sothing?” Wu Yaoming yelled in a trembling voice.
He tried to sound calm, but the fear was unmistakable. His body was shaking as he yelled, and his eyes couldn’t leave the deadly cobra, its triangular head just a few feet away from him.
The whole situation was complete chaos—total pandemonium.
Their radios crackled with Zhao Youcheng’s voice, but no one was listening anymore. They were all too busy trying to survive. Who had ti to worry about catching Wang Yun at a mont like this?
Survival ca first.
Wu Yaoming’s shouts did have so effect, though. His team, still trembling, started throwing out realgar powder. The dics snapped out of their daze and began spraying antidote solutions like they were trying to douse a wildfire, even spraying it directly onto the inspectors’ suits.
When snakes attack, they have two strategies: biting and constriction. First, they strike with a bite. Then they coil around their prey, tightening their grip slowly, cutting off the air until their victim suffocates—only then do they feast.
So of the quicker-thinking inspectors had already drawn their knives, slashing at the snakes in self-defense. But the more aggressively they fought back, the fiercer the snakes beca in their assault.
“Ahhh!”
In the midst of the frantic chaos and utter disarray, a bone-chilling roar echoed from the distance.
