Tap! Tap! Splah!

Footsteps splashed through puddles in the alley.

"Mother?"

Vivienne’s head jerked up. Through her tears, she saw Kelard standing at the alley’s entrance. He looked disoriented, half-awake, his dark hair plastered to his forehead by rain.

"Mother!" His voice sharpened with alarm.

He ran to her, dropping to his knees in the filth beside her. His hands found her shoulders, gripping tight.

"What happened? Why are you like this?" His eyes searched her face, the tears, the devastation written there. "Who did this to you? Did soone hurt you?"

Vivienne shook her head, unable to speak. Her throat was raw from sobbing.

"Talk to !" Kelard’s voice cracked. His hands moved to cup her face, forcing her to look at him. "Please, Mother. What’s wrong? Why did you leave the carriage?"

She tried to form words. Tried to explain. But how could she tell him?

"I..." Her voice ca out broken, barely a whisper.

Then she closed her mouth again.

How could she say that ’I was chasing the man who fathered your brother. I thought he loved . I thought he would help us. But he threw away like I was nothing.’

"I thought I saw... soone who could help."

"Who?" Kelard demanded. "Who was it?"

"No one." The words tasted like ash. "It was no one. I was... mistaken."

Kelard’s jaw clenched. His eyes swept the alley, looking for threats, for answers. Finding only darkness and rain.

"You’re soaking wet. You’re freezing." He pulled off his own coat and wrapped it around her shoulders. "Co on. We need to get you back to the carriage. You need to get warm."

He stood, pulling her up with him. Her legs were unsteady, but he held her weight, one arm around her waist, supporting her completely.

"Whatever just happened," Kelard said quietly as they began walking, "We’ll survive it. We’ll survive all of it. Together."

Vivienne leaned against her son and let him guide her back toward the carriage.

They climbed back inside, water dripping from their clothes onto the carriage floor. Kelard settled his mother onto the bench, keeping his coat wrapped around her trembling shoulders.

The carriage lurched forward again.

Vivienne sat motionless, staring at the floor. Her eyes were empty, unfocused.

Kelard’s chest tightened. He wanted to ask more questions, demand answers. But sothing in her hollow expression stopped him. He’d never seen his mother like this.

So he kept quiet.

Renard shifted in the corner, still mostly asleep, his head bobbing with the carriage’s movent.

The rain intensified.

What had been a steady patter beca a roar, hamring against the roof like a thousand fists.

Lightning flashed, turning the world white for a heartbeat before plunging it back into darkness.

Thunder rolled, deep and ominous.

Then just as they the quieter parts of the town, where there were no sign of any souls nearby...

The carriage suddenly lurched to a halt.

Kelard grabbed the window fra to steady himself. "What happened?"

Renard jolted awake, blinking rapidly. "What?"

"Coachman?" Kelard leaned toward the window. "Why have we stopped?"

The coachman didn’t answer.

He just pointed ahead, his arm trembling.

Kelard leaned further out, squinting through the rain.

At first, there was nothing.

Just the dark street, the rain, the distant glow of shuttered windows.

Then lightning flashed.

And in that stark white light, Kelard saw him.

A man.

All in black. A deep hood obscuring his face completely. Standing perfectly still in the middle of the road, arms at his sides.

Then again darkness returned.

"Who—?" Renard started.

Another flash of lightning.

The figure hadn’t moved. Rain poured off his cloak, but he stood like a statue.

Waiting.

"Drive around him," Kelard ordered.

"I... I can’t, my lord," the coachman stamred. "The street’s too narrow, and he’s—"

Crackle!

The sound cut through the rain.

Orange light blood in the darkness.

Fire, swirling, coalescing in the hooded figure’s outstretched hand. It grew from a flicker to a fla to a roiling sphere of pure heat, casting the entire street in hellish light.

The horses scread. They reared back, panicking, their eyes rolling white.

"Get down!" Kelard shoved his mother toward the floor.

WHOOSH!

*******

Few minutes ago...

Pitter! Patter!

Rain drumd steadily on the tavern’s roof, a rhythmic backdrop to the low murmur of conversation within.

Late-night drinkers huddled over their ales. Travelers seeking shelter from the storm crowded the tables near the hearth.

In the corner, a figure stood from the shadowed bench. Dark hood pulled low. Face obscured by a black scarf embroidered with thorny red vines.

They stretched their neck, rolling their shoulders like soone preparing for work.

Then moved toward the door.

"System," they whispered.

Remove Vivienne Valtair.

"Should I keep you company, young master?"

Alaric paused, turning his head.

A girl stood beside the table, midnight blue hair cascading from beneath a traveling cloak, purple eyes luminous in the firelight.

Her expression was neutral, professional.

"No." Alaric shook his head. "There’s rain outside. Just stay here. I have so business. I’ll be back in a few minutes."

Nyra studied him for a long mont. Her eyes flicked to the door, then back to his hidden face.

"As you wish, young master." She inclined her head and returned to the table, settling back into her seat with fluid grace.

Alaric approached a guard standing near the entrance. He pressed so silver coins into the man’s palm.

"Nothing should happen to the lady there." He gestured subtly toward Nyra. "Understand?"

The guard’s eyes widened at the weight of coin. He nodded quickly. "Yes, sir. No one will bother her."

"Good."

Alaric pulled his hood lower and stepped out into the storm.

The rain hit him imdiately, cold, driving, relentless.

Lightning split the sky above, followed by thunder that shook the cobblestones.

He walked with purpose, his boots splashing through puddles, cloak billowing behind him.

"Status," Alaric commanded.

The cyan panel materialized before his eyes.

Alaric raised his hand, essence already pooling in his palm.
