I'vecaughtupwithchaptersandI'vegottosaythenecromancerclassIsweakasf#ck,fromwhatI'veseensofarandotherthenhavingthousandsofweakassskeletonsorslightlystrongerskeletonsIdon'tchowtheclasscanmakehimmorepowerful Therareactual"Necromancer"story.Sharesmanythingswith"MyNecromancerClass",soifsomeone'sintostufflikethis,checktheothernoveltoo.FinishedBook2asofwritingthis.TheworldbuildingisthereandIcanassumeacertaineffortwasputinit,butitstillhasplentyofflaws.Forexample,thehuntersystemisanopen/knownscamandhasaclear-cutmajordrawbacks,yetpeoplelivinginthatworldarestillwillinglyparticipatinginit.It'slose-losedecisionespeciallyifyouputitagainstthefactthatthepeopleinthisfictionalworldcansomewhateasilybecomequitepowerful(letsnotforgettheexistenceofisolatedcommunitiesandwhatitimpliestoo!).Theeffectivenessofcontrollingmechanismisalsoquestionableandforalltheseeminglyunnecessaryhassletheauthoritieswentthroughto'reignin'Steelarms,theywerestilllefttojustroamaroundfreely.Thenthere'sthescaleoftheworlditselfwhichissupposedlyamulti-universeandallthat.WhileIwontcommentontheRiftworldssincethey'vestillbeenleftmysterious,theworldMCresidesinseemslike"4villagesandanoccasionalhamlet".Thecharactersoftenappearasiftheyaren'tlivingintheirworld.Actionssometimesmakenosense,thethingstheysaysometimesmakenosenseeither.Dovewasthetopoffender-completelyoutplaceinconductandactions(somuchhegivesanimpressionofabanter-botmadeforamusinglittlechildren).It'snotthattheroleandpurposeofthecharacters(Doveandothersincluded)isunclearoranything,buttheimplementationfeelsvery,veryoffmoreoftenthannot.ThenecromancerclasssystemitselfisprettyDnD'ish,sofarsogood.AbitperplexedabouthowMC'ssecondclassworks,asit's"whatever"goeskindofthingthatturnsintoalameSkypeatsomepoint.TheVampire'companion'mademeespeciallyfrownindispleasure(herappearanceitselfandthecourt).She'skindoftemptinghimintopoweryetnot,kindofhelpinghimyetalsonot,there'ssomesortoftransactiongoingonyetnothingconcreteandveryvague(inabadway).Forexample,Abysswasvagueinagoodway-apersoncanlookintoitandifhe'sstrong-hemaygainsomething,ifnot-he'llbecomedeadorcorrupted.Ontheotherhand-wheneverhe'sSkypecallingthecourtmysuspenseofdisbeliefbreaksalmostasfastasduringDove's"quirkydialoguelines".ThereareotherthingsI'venottouched(likethesee-sawofcharacterdevelopmentandregressionorsomeofthereallyodd(andalsooutofplace)relationshipsbetweenpeople),butIhaveletmostofthesizeablegrievancesoutofmysystemalreadyandlostmotivationtoaddanythingelse.Whilethismayseemassomesortofspitefulbashing,Istilllikethestoryandalwayseagerfornewchapters,asthere'snorealcompetitioninthe"necromancer"space(whichisashame).Iwouldalsoclaim,thattheauthorisgettingbetter(thefurtherhedelvesintothestory),soevenifsomemightheavilydislikethestoryatthebeginning,itgetsprogressivelybetterthefurtheritgoes. Meh.I'mprettydisappointedintheauthor.Thepremisethatmakesthenovelpossibleisachievedviaweakstorywriting.TheinconsistentcharactersandunreasonabledecisionmakingjustmakesmefeellikeI'mwastingmytime.Itcouldhaveeasilybeenfixed,too.Buttoleaveitlikethat?Thefirstfewchapters? IfulikeselfrighteousprickMCthenthisnovelisforyou.Neverbendsonhismoralsnomatterlifeordeathsituationsthenthisdiffinitlyforu.Butforme,thisisawasteoftime.Can'tstandthistypeofMC,becauseifnotforplotarmortheywillbethefirstonestodieifputinsomeothernovel.ThisisMCmindsetifIleavethemalonetheywillleavemealone,ohishesofreakenwrong... IRLmostpeopledon’thelppeopletheydon’tknowfornoreason,yetthisMCisextremelyrighteousandfightstothedeathforsomevillagers.IDKwhythough,hisparentswouldn’thaveraisedhimtoberighteous,consideringthereareexistencesmuchstrongerthanthehumans,sohisparentswouldhavediedalreadyiftheytriedtokillalltheevilcreaturestheycameacrosstosavepeople.TheMCisalsonaive,buttheauthorshowshisEQisn’tlowwhichiskindacontradictory. Idon'tthinkhisparentstaughthimmuch,theysimplyweren'tverypresent.Otherwise,hewasraisedbyhisuncleandraisedhearingthathisparentswereincredible,awesome,worshipedheroes.Thatistheshadowhegrewunderandwhatmakeshimholdontothisrighteousnessdespitethecurrentcircumstances.Heisalsoverysheltered,whichIguessiswheretheinitialinnocencecamefrom,nowIthinktheinnocenceisahugedoseofdenial,hesimplyrefusestoacceptsocietywillneveraccepthimand,inanattempttoprovehimself,itreinforcestheherocomplex.
