Now reading: Chapter 279: Tournament [1] from Awakening Domination System: But I'm a Slave?, a Fantasy novel by Darkstar116.

The main training hall was packed.

All first-year Silver Crown students had been summoned all sections combined.

At the front stood multiple professors: Professor Ashton for combat, Professor Aldric for essence theory, Professor Mills for tactical coordination, and several others whose specialties would be needed for tournant preparation.

Professor Ashton’s voice cut through the noise. "Attention!"

Silence fell imdiately.

"The tournant is in four days. You’ve had individual training. Now we coordinate." She gestured to the other professors. "We will be assigning roles based on your evaluation scores, combat performance, and aptitude assessnts conducted over the past months."

Professor Aldric stepped forward, pulling out a long scroll. "The tournant consists of three main categories. Individual Combat. Team Strategy Trials, groups of five, objective-based challenges. Essence Mastery Challenges."

Professor Mills continued. "Most of you will participate in only one category. So exceptional students will compete in multiple. Your assignnts are final. No substitutions except for dical ergency."

The scroll was unrolled further.

"Individual Combat participants..." Professor Aldric began reading nas.

"Alaric Glimor."

Expected.

"Verelia Rithvale."

Also expected.

"Elina Glimor."

Elina’s expression remained neutral, but there was satisfaction in her eyes.

"Damien Korr. Kieran Draveris."

...

More nas followed.

"Team Strategy Trials..."

Different nas this ti. Students who’d shown better coordination skills, tactical thinking, ability to work in groups.

"Alaric Glimor. Verelia Rithvale. Lyria Lumnious. Seraphine Lumnious. Celestia Ashford. Thomas Grey. Isolde Fen..."

Lyria’s expression didn’t change when her na was called. She simply stood with her platinum hair falling like a curtain around her face, hands clutched together. Beside her, Seraphine—wearing her characteristic black blindfold with golden threading—turned her head toward Lyria with what might have been a smile beneath the formal composure she maintained in public.

"Essence Mastery Challenges..."

Students with exceptional control and theoretical knowledge. Fewer nas here, this was the most technically demanding category.

"Lily Ashford. Carius Hale."

Lily stood with Elina, her dark hair braided neatly, expression calm and attentive.

Once all assignnts were complete, Professor Ashton spoke again. "Individual Combat participants, with . You’ll be drilling matchups, adapting to different fighting styles, learning to read opponents quickly. Team Strategy, with Professor Mills. You’ll be running coordination exercises, learning to function as units. Essence Mastery, with Professor Aldric. Precision work and theoretical challenges."

The students divided into their respective groups.

----

The next three days blurred together in relentless preparation.

Individual Combat students sparred constantly. Different opponents every session, different conditions, different restrictions. Fighting while exhausted.

Alaric faced Elina twice, both matches brutal, ending in narrow victories for him through technique rather than raw power. Her golden essence coating made her devastating in close combat, but his experience and varied approach gave him edges she couldn’t quite overco.

He fought Verelia once in an official training match. They knew each other too well by now, the match beca a chess ga of feints and counters, ending in a draw when ti expired.

Team Strategy Trials groups ran through mock scenarios. Retrieve objectives under hostile conditions. Defend positions against overwhelming numbers. Coordinate attacks with limited communication.

Lyria functioned with quiet efficiency, her water manipulation providing both offense and support. But she rarely spoke, letting others take leadership roles, contributing when necessary but never seeking spotlight.

Seraphine, despite her blindfold, moved with uncanny precision. Her light-based essence manipulation created barriers, illuminated hidden threats, supported teammates with perfect timing. In public training, she maintained composed professionalism. But occasionally, when near Lyria, small gestures revealed deeper connection, a touch on the arm, a head tilt that suggested unspoken communication.

Essence Mastery participants practiced control exercises that would make most mages weep. Creating essence constructs with microter precision. Maintaining multiple spells simultaneously while solving theoretical problems. Demonstrating advanced techniques under pressure.

Lily excelled here, her earth affinity giving her natural stability and control. She worked thodically, never flashy, just consistently competent.

Throughout it all, professors pushed harder than normal curriculum ever demanded. Students collapsed from exhaustion. So sustained injuries requiring healing. Everyone was bruised, drained, tested beyond their perceived limits.

But they improved. Rapidly. Dramatically.

By the third day, Individual Combat participants moved with sharper instincts. Team Strategy groups functioned with near-telepathic coordination. Essence Mastery students demonstrated control that would have seed impossible weeks ago.

Professor Ashton gathered all groups together one final ti.

"Tomorrow is the tournant. You’ve trained hard. You’re as prepared as you’re going to be." Her scarred face was stern. "Rember, you represent Silver Crown. Our reputation is built on excellence. Maintain it."

She dismissed them.

Students dispersed, exhausted, nervous, excited.

Tomorrow would prove whether the training had been enough.

Tomorrow, Silver Crown would either maintain dominance or watch it crumble.

And Alaric, walking back to his dormitory with aching muscles and strategic scenarios still running through his mind.

[Tournant Day]

The Academy had transford overnight.

Banners hung from every building. Colors rippled in the morning breeze, creating a patchwork of house pride across campus.

The main arena had been expanded with temporary seating that rose in tiered circles around three separate combat rings. Smaller arenas dotted the grounds for simultaneous events, team strategy courses visible through magical barriers, essence mastery demonstration platforms already humming with prepared enchantnts.

Vendors lined the pathways between venues. Food stalls selling everything from simple at skewers to elaborate pastries. rchandise booths hawking house colors, commorative tokens, enchanted trinkets that changed color based on match outcos.

And betting corners. Lots of betting corners.

Students, faculty, and outside spectators clustered around boards displaying odds, placing wagers on individual matches, overall house rankings. Money changed hands rapidly, the air thick with speculation and competing predictions.

The crowd itself was diverse in ways that went beyond simple house affiliation.

Humans dominated, of course, this was primarily a human kingdom. But elves moved through the crowds with characteristic grace, their pointed ears and ethereal features drawing attention. Most wore flowing garnts in natural colors, observing the proceedings with polite but distant interest.

Vampires attended in smaller numbers, clustered in shadowed seating areas. Pale skin, sharp features, eyes that glead with colors not quite natural. They watched the combat preparations with predatory focus, clearly anticipating the violence to co.

When elves and vampires passed each other, there was... tension. Not open hostility, but careful distance. Ancient disputes between their races hadn’t been forgotten, even if current politics demanded civility.

Beastkin were scattered throughout, fox-eared rchants, cat-eyed observers. Their enhanced senses made them excellent spectators, catching details others missed. So wore partial beast features openly, others used glamours to appear more human.

The Student Council worked the crowds with practiced efficiency.

Aurelia Glimor stood near the main entrance, directing arriving guests with calm authority.

Her honey-gold eyes tracked everything, ensuring smooth flow, handling problems before they escalated.

Her council mbers fanned out across the grounds, each managing different aspects, seating arrangents, vendor disputes, security coordination with Academy guards.

As morning progressed toward the tournant’s official start ti, the crowds swelled. Every seat filled. Standing room packed tight. The energy built like pressure before a storm.

High above the main arena, a platform had been erected for the comntator.

A woman in formal robes stood there, her voice magically amplified to carry across the entire venue. Professor Helena Vash, known for her dramatic flair and encyclopedic knowledge.

"Welco! Welco, everyone, to the Annual Inter-House Tournant!"

Cheers erupted. Banners waved. The crowd’s roar was deafening.

"I am Professor Vash, and I’ll be your comntator for today’s events!" She gestured broadly. "We have an exciting day ahead, Individual Combat, Team Strategy Trials, and Essence Mastery Challenges! Houses will compete! Champions will erge! Glory awaits!"

More cheers.

"Before we begin, an announcent... Headmaster sends his regrets. Urgent matters have called him away from campus. But he assures us that the tournant will proceed with full faculty oversight and his complete confidence in today’s participants!"

So disappointed murmurs rippled through the crowd—the Headmaster’s presence was traditional—but the excitent remained high.

"Now!" Professor Vash’s voice rose dramatically.

"Let explain today’s structure! We begin with our first-year students, the newest blood, the rising stars, the future of their houses! Individual Combat brackets are single elimination, lose once, you’re out! Team Strategy Trials are objective-based, complete the challenges faster and cleaner than your opponents! Essence Mastery demonstrations are judged on precision, control!"

She paused for effect.

"And for those of you who’ve placed bets..." laughter from the crowd, "Rember that odds can shift dramatically! Underdogs rise! Favorites fall! That’s what makes this exciting!"

The betting corners saw renewed activity, people making last-minute wagers based on morning odds.

"Our first event... FIRST-YEAR INDIVIDUAL COMBAT!" Professor Vash’s voice bood.
