Aurora gasped, her eyes wide with shock. "He... he pushed you? And you lost the baby?"
Emily nodded, her hands clenched into fists.
"Yes. I still rember that night so clearly. We were arguing about money. I told him that things would get better and that we just had to be patient. But he was so drunk, so angry. He yelled at , called useless, and then... he pushed ."
Her voice trembled, and she took a deep breath before continuing.
"I rember falling. I rember the pain. And then... everything went black. When I woke up in the hospital, the doctor told I had lost the baby."
Aurora felt her heart ache for Emily. "That must have been so painful. I’m so sorry, Emily."
"That didn’t make give up on him Aurora," Emily said in an eerily calm tone.
"What was it?"
"I only have a grandfather, my parents died when I was young. When he heard I miscarried my life was in danger and he died of a heart attack.
When I woke up I was devasted and wanted to divorce him right away. But you know what Aurora? He kneeled down and begged to stay in his life.
For the next 2 years, he chased and acted as if I was his world and my forgiveness was all that mattered to him.
He made feel as if he deserved a second chance. So I gave him."
Emily paused then tapped on Aurora’s nose and said,
"I will give a life-long lesson, never give a second chance to a man who broke your heart the first ti. If they can break it the first ti, they can do it the second ti too.
The mature and calm man who had chased for 2 years, after gaining forgiveness changed within 8 months.
Yet I clung to the hope that he would eventually understand his mistake. Then I beca pregnant again.
And he who was not able to secure any job decided to stay in one of his mother’s properties, when she got the news that I was pregnant again, she decided to take matters into her own hands."
Emily let out a bitter laugh.
"She acted so sweet in front of George, always saying she was just looking out for and the baby. But the mont he left the house, she turned into a different person."
Aurora frowned. "What did she do?"
Emily sighed.
"She made do everything, Aurora. Cooking, cleaning, laundry—she said it was ’good exercise’ for a pregnant woman. At first, I thought maybe she just didn’t realize how tired I was, so I tried to tell her.
But she just smiled and said, ’Oh, sweetie, in our ti, won did all this and never complained. You young girls are so weak these days.’"
Aurora clenched her fists. "That’s terrible! What about George? Didn’t he see how she was treating you?"
Emily shook her head.
"He was busy feeling sorry for himself. His career still wasn’t taking off, and he started drinking again. I begged him to talk to his mother, but he just brushed it off. ’She’s just old-fashioned,’ he’d say. ’She ans well.’"
Aurora rolled her eyes. "Of course, he said that."
Emily gave a small, sad smile.
"Yeah. And it only got worse. Margaret started controlling everything. She told what I could eat, when I could rest, and even how I should dress.
If I ever disagreed, she’d act all hurt in front of George and say I was being rude. And George always took her side."
Aurora’s face darkened. "That’s not fair. You were the one carrying his child!"
Emily nodded.
"Exactly. But in his eyes, his mother could do no wrong. Sigh! The worst part was, I believed that he didn’t know I was suffering so much.
Hence when he decided to take a break from job hunting, I agreed. Turns out I was wrong. All day long he would laze on the couch while I had to do all the chores.
For the first few days, I hoped he would say sothing to his mother. But he would only focus on his gas and never even bother to calm his mother who would scold if I done any of the chores."
Aurora’s hands tightened into fists.
"That’s so unfair! You were pregnant! He should have helped you, not just sat around playing gas."
Emily let out a tired sigh.
"I thought the sa. But every ti I brought it up, he just waved off. He said I was overreacting and that his mother was just trying to make strong. He told to stop complaining and be grateful we had a place to stay."
Aurora’s face twisted in anger. "That’s so ssed up. He was your husband! He should have cared for you!"
Emily gave a bitter smile.
"I know. But back then, I kept hoping things would change. I thought maybe, once the baby arrived, he would finally understand and step up as a father. But I was wrong."
Aurora leaned forward. "What happened next?"
Emily sighed.
"Margaret kept pushing harder. She made scrub floors, cook big als, and even lift heavy things. If I ever said I was too tired, she’d scold , saying I was lazy. My body hurt all the ti, but I forced myself to keep going."
Aurora’s eyes filled with worry. "That’s not okay, Emily. That’s abuse."
Emily nodded.
"I know that now. But at the ti, I felt trapped. I had nowhere else to go, and no money of my own. And George didn’t care.
He was either playing gas, drinking, or sleeping. He stopped even pretending to be nice to .
I knew instantly that it was my ti to leave the relationship permanently and hence I started to look for a job. And that’s how I ended up here.
Now I have financial stability, I think I can divorce him with no worries."
