"You’re not here, what difference does it make where I am?" Jas Black responded.
He had co ho just to see her. If she didn’t return, the place would be cold and empty, and waiting there for midnight would be aningless.
How was that different from any other year?
Jas intended to continue smoking but then realized sothing, promptly extinguished the cigarette butt, and stood up to open the balcony door to ventilate.
The voice with which he answered her was cold and clear, even chillier than the night breeze that seeped in from outside.
After opening the balcony door, he stood at the doorway, leaning there, slightly tilting his head, his gaze resting on her.
Jane Sampson put the stuff in her hands down on the table, then slowly moved towards Jas. Seeing that he didn’t move away, she reached out and embraced him.
"I’m sorry," she nestled her head against his chest, "I shouldn’t have deliberately upset you when you called ."
Jane apologized, then lifted her head to look at him and explained, "I was making a cake for you, but I’m a bit clumsy. It took a second attempt to make one that looked okay, and that’s why I was delayed. But I wanted to surprise you, so I didn’t ask you to pick up."
From that phrase Jas said, ’You’re not here, what difference does it make where I am,’ Jane knew why Jas was so angry. She knew he was upset because she didn’t seem to care about him.
Finally, Jas raised his hand, gently placed it on the face of the woman acting coquettishly, covering her sparkling eyes.
He asked, "Am I important to you?"
Jane almost instinctively nodded, "Important."
Her answer made his palm pause slightly, and then he slowly moved his hand away from her eyes, and held her tightly, lowering his head to kiss her.
At that mont, Jas didn’t know how to express to Jane the feelings he had when he left ho.
He also didn’t know how to tell her about how he had been smoking in the living room, unaware of the ti, until she appeared in the doorway, and what he had felt at that mont.
How desolate he felt when he ca back, and how astonished he was at this mont when she appeared.
The roller coaster of emotions was nothing compared to this.
Thus, when she said he was important to her, Jas thought he was willing to believe it.
This was the first ti in his life he had so eagerly looked forward to his birthday, simply because he could see her, busy as she was.
In the many decades of his past, Jas had never deliberately celebrated his birthday; he had always been indifferent to such days since he was young.
But now, because of her, such days seed to have gained a different significance.
Jas kissed her fiercely, held her tightly, wishing he could ld her into his very bones and blood.
He wanted her to be by his side at all tis, yet he couldn’t bear seeing her unhappy, couldn’t bear to cut off the wings she had just started to spread again.
After the kiss, he continued to hold her at the balcony doorway, for a long ti not willing to let her go.
And Jane just stood there motionless, allowing him to hold her, comfortably resting her face against his chest, listening to each beat of his heart, until her mobile phone beeped.
She hastily looked up at him.
"Jas Black, happy birthday!"
That was the sound of the alarm she had set.
"I want to be the first one to wish you a happy birthday!" Jane’s voice was as soft as lted candy. Seeing Jas crook the corner of his mouth in a smile, she then half-pulled, half-pushed him towards the sofa, saying, "Let’s eat cake, eat cake!"
