"I’m just saying this now, the cake might not look very good, but you’re not allowed to mock my skills," Jane Sampson pulled Jas Black over to the tea table, pressing him to sit down on the sofa.
Just as she had reached out to unwrap the cake, at the last mont she rembered sothing else and turned her head to look at Jas Black, making a special point to say it so that he couldn’t mock her.
Watching Jane’s finger waving in front of him, Jas Black lifted her hand and held it in his palm, his voice humd with a chuckle.
He knew she would return, and even if she ca back empty-handed, he wouldn’t mock her.
"Let go, I need to unwrap the cake for you," Jane glared at her hand which was caught in Jas’s grip and couldn’t be pulled free. She blinked at Jas and pouted her lips, signaling him not to ss around.
Jas humd a response, but showed no intention of letting go at all.
Jane stomped her foot, getting impatient, but since Jas wouldn’t loosen his grip, she could only glare helplessly.
After a while, she thought for a mont and then leaned towards Jas, bending over to give him a kiss while he sat.
Her lips landed on the side of his face, and after the kiss, she tried to pull her hand free.
Hmm, she managed to pull it back.
Jane chuckled with delight, and after gaining her freedom, she quickly stepped back and unwrapped the cake in a few swift moves, stuck the candles in, and then used the lighter that Jas had just used for his cigarette to light a candle for him.
"This is the first birthday I’m celebrating with you, so I’m lighting just one candle for you. From now on, each year I’ll add another candle," Jane said as she gently pushed the not so pretty cake in front of Jas.
Then, turning around, she clicked off the living room electric light, and in an instant, the room was illuminated only by the faint candlelight and the gradual ergence of her singing voice.
"Happy Birthday to you, Happy Birthday to you, Happy Birthday to you..." Jane walked step by step towards Jas, her voice sounding very pleasant. Thus, even such an ordinary birthday song, sung from her lips at this mont, beca in Jas’s eyes the most beautiful song in the world.
"Close your eyes and make a wish, then blow out the candle," Jane sat next to Jas, her eyes gleaming as she looked at him.
Jas’s gaze left the green figure on the cake and fell upon Jane’s face, capturing the light in her shining eyes.
"I want to kiss you," he said all of a sudden.
Jane was startled, her ears turned red and she answered in a hushed tone, "Make a wish first."
His wish?
Jas’s eyes deepened as he thought to himself.
One, may his family be healthy and everything go smoothly; two, may she always be happy.
And the third wish...
The third wish was for her to be there, year after year, just like today. That, on each birthday, she would be beside him, singing him a Happy Birthday, and making him a cake that wasn’t too ugly but wasn’t quite beautiful either.
That on each birthday, she would always be the first one to say Happy Birthday to him.
Two out of his three wishes, pertained to her.
After making a wish, Jas gently blew out the candle under her sparkling gaze. He heard her clapping joyfully like a child, then she bounced off to turn the lights back on.
Jane passed the cake-cutting knife to Jas, "The birthday boy has to cut the cake!"
